Sickening... we need someone to take action

I believe that YOU are "somebody."

Peace,
dave

I was hoping for "somebody" more along the lines of an editor of a major blog, or someone with power in the media... someone that has the power to get information out to a broader audience, and in the right way. So far, most attempts at making high-powered lasers sound "dangerous" have just contributed to the reverse-psychology effect of making people want it even more.

If I could go on national television and make a 90 second speech in front of millions of people, I would have spent every waking second until then preparing for it and I believe I would truly be able to make a difference (with much advice from the forum preparing the actual content of the speech). Unfortunately, I don't have that opportunity...

Silver lining. Just maybe. Nowhere has there been any doubts in these reports that these lasers are dangerous.

The draw is their danger -- so maybe, just maybe, this could shift the "hey, its just a toy" paradigm.

All of these exhibits have talked about how risky they are. Maybe the "meme" will shift from "laser pointer" to "potentially dangerous handheld laser" due to this 'craze'.

Just saying. Though there's a rush on these things, their dangerousness is also being disseminated along with their popularity.

Most of the forum noobs who have posted, who I've talked to, do seem to "get it". Will there be idiots that won't? Stupid kids who will cause problems? Sure (link - thats right, 'blowtorch game'.).

But I've actually got a little bit more hope here looking at lot of the comments on these boards. Most people seem to understand that a laser like this can do some serious damage. Only a few of the random "lol its only 1 watt durr" comments, that have been quickly corrected.

Where do you think that bloggers, journalists, and politicians get their ideas about what to write about or do?

If you feel strongly about this, write or call one of the people that you want to "publicize" this idea.

WE are not the person or persons you need to contact about it

Be part of the solution instead of part of the wailing masses.

Peace,
dave

That's a good idea... for some reason the thought never even crossed my mind to actually go and contact a blogger/journalist about this, I'll hop on it asap!

As much as a blessing this 445nnm diode is to us hobbyists, It is also a curse.

At $200 or less, or whenever we see these coming from the likes of o-like, at $129.
It wont be long before we start hearing of accidental blindness, or other injuries in the media. Just wait until some politician decides to make it his or her agenda to make it a law, that possessing any laser over 5mW a crime. Unless you have a license and are using it for scientific or industrial purposes.

We already get enough attention in the media from people abusing 532nm. Those incidents that made it in the media, were purposeful acts, like shinning lasers at aircraft.

What do you think is going to happen when misguided youth, Or sick people Discover that you can give people 20 feet away, a nasty burn with these lasers??:(

People relax!!! This hobby isnt leaving anytime soon, air soft guns and paintball guns are involved in more crimes then lasers. And they are cheaper and more attainable.
If the Gov cared they would require a permit for those guns.

Lasers have a more practical use then Airsoft or paintball guns....So if they r not imposing restrictions on them then they wont on lasers.

Edit: about people talking about "hearing on the news about people getting blinded",I have one thing to say WHO CARES.
Its there problem, they where obviously somehow involved in sure, Especially a friend of someone who buys the laser, I HOPE THEY GET IT IN THE EYE.
Then maybe that dumbfu*k will learn and so will his parents.... People are going to have to learn the hard way with these things.

Hopefully the "misguided youth" or "sick people" are charged with a Felony. :thanks:

They will do it over and over again until someone gets hurt, which in this case is the ONLY way people will learn.

I second what ash said.
Most people understand paintball, and can see the fun in it, but no politician can relate to lasers... Also not knowing anything about them scares people, and the fact that these are concealable, and portable doesn't help...
