sorry , upper.. items such as these are always warranty voided if YOU take it apart.
Did You ask Ben if you should try your own fix, especially wth you admitting a lack of experience( also reflected in your double and triple postings) PMing is not instant messageing except i one direction, so if you could not wait to hear back from Ben --then you lack patience.
Much has been posted here concerning twisting of the wires when assembling a build. And logically that also applies to unscrewing a heatsinked w/diode , driver etc attached. .... even more important than when building. afaik
You not the first to make this mistake, And since ben is the builder you should, still after all this drama , allow him to repair it. You could be all wrong on your assumptions and by not allowing ben an opportunity to help you I am afriad you done the classic self-fulfilling prophecy.
. Ben has his rep somewhat the line here and I feel he will not take advantage of you. --Just IMO-- However you too will be judged by how this goes from here. The third party/middleman thing is not a bad idea but I still think paying the nominal cost to ship it 'home' for a fixin'...is not much of a risk or further investment . If he were to be able to fix without a parts cost and paid to insured ship it back to you IMHO you made out just fine, and you could become friencs over this instead of the opposite.--your choice-lose/lose or win/win???
ALSO you wrote--quote
"Also I can tell you definitively that me taking it apart (hardly, I just unscrewed the one part) DID NOT cause the unit to break."
^^^ that makes no sense coming from an admitted novice and yes unscrewing just one part-- the incorrect way can cause exactly how yours looks.
if you want to learn how to dissaemble I suggest you buy a nice kit and follow DTRs easy tuts and you will then understand.
and Ben no shrink?? or tape -- thats SOP.
good luck to both
hak ....solo mis dos centavos+
Ok, I am not going to go through all of this and pick it apart right now, but I said in here somewhere that I WOULD PAY SHIPPING TO HIM, but he is NOT offering free fix OR paying for shipping back to me. I feel it is unreasonable for me to pay all of that.sorry , upper.. items such as these are always warranty voided if YOU take it apart.

I agree, you should be sending it back to bhwollen. And you should have to pay for shipping both ways. Might not sound fair, but thats how it usually works.
unfortunately bhwollen wont like this, but I think he should fix the laser. Even if it was just a loose connection and your the one who totally fried it by taking it apart.
The only reason I say this is for the fact bhwollen did not use any shrinkwrap on the connections. If in the picture I saw he did use some kind of wrapping. I would feel different about who pays for it.
If your going to sell or offer a laser building service. You need to cover all your bases. Use the best wire you can get, use shrinkwrapping and make sure everything is working smoothly before you ship it.
That way when you do have a customer claim your laser is faulty you have a better chance defending your work.
@bhwollen, pick up some heatshrink bro! It will save you alot of hassle... Also, after heatshrinking each individual wire, put a larger sized heatshrink over all of them to make it less prone to being twisted.
If you look close you can see that the wires are twisted clockwise...thats the twist to screw together...EDIT: not blaming anyone in particular but the wires are extremely twisted and that is probably what tore them apart.
Not a good enough picture to really see the pins well...
From that picture, it looks like there is solder on the case pin, and not on the negative pin.
But yes, a good observation about the clockwise twisting of the wires!
That would lead you to think that they were twisted by trying to focus, and maybe the module was turning inside the heatsink...
