Just finished Big Blue this guy has two 18650 cells and a custom PYRO linear driver that has two speeds, balls to the wall and pretty. the diode is being feed a steady 630ma on balls to the wall Speed and with a Aixiz glass 405 lens he's putting out 486mW, with a LarryDFW lens that jumps to 547mW WOW !
On pretty speed the diode only gets 220ma and with the Aixiz glass 405 it put's out 40mW and with the LarryDFW lens it's 47mW.
Here's a beam shot and in the room I'm shining it into there are no other lights on and no smoke in the room :D

Wow, that beast is very big and heavy :D
But there is lot of space for heat dissipation.

Is there any way to give it less than 12V?
On 12V there is lot, lot, lot of heat generated of LM317. I can't even imagine that heat.

You can use 10W resistor, bigger resistor is better, and minimum power for 1ohm resistor is about 1.6W (I recommend 2W)

This resistor you mentioned above would be great.
 
@ Flaminpyro - I'm guessing but the beam shot has GOT to be, "Balls to the Wall", setting, right? Careful you don't put scorch marks up there! ;)

Have you done anything fancy to the exit aperture? It looks to have a narrower opening and the beam looks a bit tidier but that could just be the massive glare.

Yes the beam shot is at 630ma with the stock Aixiz glass 405 lens.
the narrower opening look is because it is a lens with threads only half it's length. you can't put on a stock focus ring.

Ah, okay I see that now. With a bit of PTFE. The host was a slightly different scale in my mind until you said that...

Hi Mike,

I notice the same thing regards powers being all over the graph, (mentioned in another post). For instance, with the same lens setup at 513mA I'm getting just over 500mW compared to 340mW in the list quoted. That is quite a difference. I know this could just be down to natural variances but do you think it is also worth keeping a note of which model projector diodes come from? Which one did your diode come from that gave these results? Mine came from a A140. They might be the same diodes but batched differently?

Perhaps we'll start to see a pattern if we can group them this way too.

I like your ample finned heatsink !

My lens is adding ~13% over the 405 glass lens.

That seems like a nice power boost.

data from diode 2

980mA was the highest reading i got when setting my micro boost w/18650 before the mA began to drop off.
?1050mW? maxed out my laserbee LPM
405-g-1 lens
after powering it for about ten seconds to test the mW it began to flash on and off so i think the microboost cant handle it at 980mA. gonna set it back down to 6-700mA soon.

At least I can say I broke the 1W barrier!
 
What battery? More than likely it's the battery not handling the current...

I had a cheap 18650 drop out on me at only about 700mA's.

Then I put one of my AW brand 18650's in there and it held steady for a higher adjustment.

I agree , that sounds like the battery is at fault.

Also , a bit off topic, i thought i saw someone make a 445nm pen style pointer, but i cant find the post. has anyone seen it? I'd like to see what batteries they used and what current they were running etc...
 
That's about the same efficiency as my small 445 build in the SS CR2 host...

I got 262mW's @ 448mA's with a 'small aperture sleeved' 405-G-1. But I checked it again last night after maybe 20 minutes of use, and it gave 280mW's with a battery that only had 3.85 volts??

It's like it got better with a 'burn in' period... :)

Edit: Scratch that... Man I've been staying up too late! I remember that I took out the 'small aperture sleeve' to send it to Dave... :crackup:

That's why it gave more power...
