Hey Dave,

I notice you have yours running on a Micro Boost. I received my 1st batch of these today from, "The Other", forum and was intending to use a 3.6V LiPo rechargeable when it struck me these are boost only drivers. I know that on rare occasions they can kick out a shade more then 4.2V full charge voltage but should I be worried about this with these LDs? I mean, quoting one source, (DiachI), he has 4.4V @ somewhere very close to 1.03A but if I want to run at say 500mA the voltage required will be less. Less than 4.2V?

Probably worrying about nothing but the numbers are just too close for me to say WTH and do it anyway.

Nearly all the queries anyway. Have you tried installing all three of the jumpers as Dr.Lava suggests? Does this increase current output beyond 1A or just increase efficiency?

I think the limits on this driver, (for this particular application only!), need careful thought. Above 4.4V output from the battery is obviously bad but unlikely from one of these rechargeables but trying to run these diodes at a much reduced current may put the required voltage too low to be safe. Threshold voltage is 3.6V, 200mA. Would you agree? I know these questions would be best answered by the revered Dr. himself but as it's in this thread too... (I will link any any answers to the thread Jayrob mentions above.)

I have not tried all three jumpers yet...

I have been using the two jumpers for the 540 - 1000 range with good results.

Also, if you are pushing over 700mA's, make sure your 18650 is a high quality battery. I was setting a Micro BoostDrive over 700mA's and the battery I had could not handle the current. Even at full charge.

So I used my AW brand battery and had no problems at all...

Anyway yeah, I would just use a V5 FlexDrive if you will be running this 445 diode at lower than maybe 400mA's. (FlexDrive is boost/buck)

I may be misunderstanding your question here. Did you get a "manual" with the drivers? If not, it can be found here

The boost can take an input of 2.7V-5.5V.

Sorry Dave, I missed your post.

Yeah, I did get a manual. As you've probably gathered from the preceeding posts it wasn't an input voltage query just that at lower currents the voltage requirements of the diode may be significantly less than the input from a fully charged 3.6V rechargeable. I will set an output of 500mA and see how we go from a single 3.6V. I'm really not expecting much run time, (if any by the sounds of it!), as I only have CR2s, (I think thats the type. Short stubby things. Same package as my 3V ones), but I've got to compromise between low enough for the battery to cope and high enough not to risk damage to the driver. Tough one this. I so wish i had another Flexdrive knocking about!

Any thoughts will be taken on board.

Does anyone know what the maximum current I should set a flexdrive at with one of these diodes if I am using a single 3.7V RCR123A battery?
 
My second build is a lower efficiency diode...

I have it set at 448mA's with a V5 FlexDrive in a polished SS CR2 host:

Using my new custom 'small aperture sleeve/retainer' with a 405-G-1, it gives 262mW's.

* 448mA's
* 262mW's
* Battery current draw - 480mA's (RCR2 rechargeable)

I tested it's power with an AixiZ 405 glass lens as well, and it was 7% lower in power than my 'small aperture' 405-G-1.

I guess I'll be happy with that.... 260mW's isn't too bad for such a small little host! :)

Don't know yet, but if the battery is 300mAh's capacity, then it should be good for about 45 minutes or so I would think...

I don't think the laser will sag in power, but instead, I must make sure not to over discharge the battery.

The driver should stay in regulation until the battery gets below 2 volts. But it's not good for an Li-Ion to get that low...

So I'll be checking it once in a while...

This isnt a complete build YET, but here is the module running @ 1400mA from an
AMC7135. Shot out 1.2W of 445nm. It's powered by 2 14500's.

Using a regular 3 element glass aixiz, not the 405 glass aixiz.

Once I put this in "something" I'll post more pics.

It gets hot very quickly as is.

Yes , im a diode bully :)


I hope it lasts at this current , but i need to heatsink it or it will die prematurely.




@ArtDen , your absolutely right , i punctured the wires with the probes and im getting 4.32v
