Re: polls to ban members discontinued

I see it in the snake world too Killer, sometime if you want, I have screen shots of some hilarious drama from some snake forums.

whenever large numbers gather, things get weird at times.

Re: polls to ban members discontinued

Has anyone ever noticed that just before the Ban Hammer drops...
99% of the candidates had acquired a Neg Rep count in the hundreds..

I think if a member accumulates hundreds of Neg Reps he should be looked
at by the Mods or c0ld as a Ban Applicant..
The Neg Reps a member receives are from Forum Members... and indicates
the consensus/thoughts of the Forum about that individual...IMO

this man is right

killrB, we all read here. i for one look at rep, i'm sure you do too. as many arguments i have read here, peoples rep is always called into account. lets use your method of banning members because a poll is put up... then "bobh" should get the boot too right. what about tj (SORRY BROTHA)

Without the ban threads, we all have to remember, that our primary tool now is notifying c0ld and Revolution when we think someone should be banned. The number of people calling for the ban WILL be a factor now. Don't hold off thinking that someone else will do it. Bite the bullet (Like KiLLrB did starting the ban thread) and let the admin know.

However, be ready for the admin to disagree with you. Report the member. Ask for their ban. Ignore the member. If you need help "watching" someone that you are unsure of, let a couple of the veterans know about your concerns.

Peace,
dave

Re: polls to ban members discontinued

Here's the problem with that rep idea. A lot of times newer members get into giant rep hole over some stupid E-Drama in one thread. They might not necessarily be a bad forum member. They just pissed off some veterans and got rep hammered for it.

I have seen that and "rep wars" too, 4-5 people send - reps, another 4-5 send + reps ("I don't think this nice member deserves - rep")

Googfart was a good example of that, however when he was banned, his reaction was so violent that we won't forget that for some time to come.

Proving once and for all, he really did deserve the negatives.

Now we have another one back, throwing misinformation at us all over again.

Look at it this way... I'm in a room with my friends and and outsider decides
to visit and Pi$$ Off one of my buddies...

He would get the crap kicked out of him because of the lack of respect
in a new surrounding and on our home turf...:tsk:

The Rep sytem allows us to "biatch slap" a new non respectful member...
If other members disagree with the Neg Reps given... they just need to
counter it with their own Pos Rep...
It is just like voting on a BAN Thread...

It is rare (I can't even remember a case) when a new member
receives hundreds of Neg Reps that were not earned...

Yep. It happens. However, it is NOT a major problem. We may loose an occasional good one. However, I do not believe that the potential of loosing one good one outweighs the higher number of the bad ones we weed out.

No system is perfect.

Also, realize. This is not capital punishment. No one dies, or is really even significantly restricted in the rest their life, or from other lists, or from the laser hobby. All we are "doing" to them is removing them from this list.

People come back from being banned ALL the time. If they have learned, they use a different user name and act as they should. If they didn't learn, and act the same ways, they will get banned again.

Peace,
dave

Re: polls to ban members discontinued

Hey I know that the majority of the time it is indeed well deserved. IE googlekiddy. I'm refering to cases where a member has made one careless comment or post that people took the wrong way and ended up with several hundred -rep. Generally they end up getting out of the hole later on if they're indeed a decent member.

I'm not trying to start anything here. Just stating that rep count doesn't always tell the whole story.

Absolutely agreed. It is just not worth altering the system over.

The rep system also has several tools in it. If someone makes a decision JUST on the rep points, they are missing a major part of the rep system. There should be comments attached to the rep AND one can link back to the thread from which the rep was awarded to read the problem for themselves.

Negative rep, just warns the reader that there is a potential problem with the member. The decision on how to treat the member is always left to the reader.

People need to keep in mind that the rep system is a warning system. Asking the admin to ban someone is a separate system. We are no longer using "ban polls" so the only thing left is asking the admin to do it.

This is how it used to be done. This thread (and decision) is really just the admission that the ban threads were not working the way that we hoped that they would.

The admin is going to have to go back to being the adjudicator.

Peace,
dave

Re: polls to ban members discontinued

Bob, in all honesty your rep got cleaned up also..........

And I myself have given you a few + reps to make up for my errors during that "valentines day massacre" ordeal.

Our admin is very fair and kind.

Re: polls to ban members discontinued

This cannot be true! Two examples that are obvious are the two most recent, myself and MrGoog. You telling me you've banned 200 people, all having negative rep?!????!!!

Also, when I gave negative rep and comments to those railroading me, those comments and neg points were deleted immediately. What's with THAT? Are some here above negative comments, despite their obvious violations of the terms of use?

Your Neg rep/comments and my Neg/rep comments were mutually
delete by the Admin.Mods it seems...

If you read what I wrote... I'm referring to the Members that had
accumulated HUNDREDS of Neg Reps in a few days and that got
BANNED as well...
It just seems to me to maybe be an automatic way of banning members
that accumulate hundreds of Neg Reps in a very short time...
You gotta admit... (not referring to you) a member that is here for 3
days that stirs up the Community enough to accumulare 300-500 neg
reps.. is not doing the community any good...

Can you cite a few members who you know to have returned after banning?
As a matter of fact Arenared posing as Slipstream... got banned just last night...
He has done this under 3-4 Names in the past...

You sound like you're having a bad day Bob... don't let it get to you...
It's only the Internet...

Your neg rep to me meant nothing to me...
I don't know why you're STILL complaining...
The Rep I left you is gone as well... and I felt it was 100%
justified as well.... So what... Bob... ya gots ta let er go...

I am not afraid of one rep comment... it wouldn't make any difference..
the members here know who I am...

[Edit] I agree with you that Reps and comments should not be deleted
If you think a Sticky of past issues is in order open a Poll and see what
the Members say... with enough votes the administration would do it... IMO

Scenario....

If all of a sudden I started getting Neg Reps and comments left and right....
hundreds of them...
Would you not wonder what I had Posted to annoy the Forum Community...

It would have to be something against the community mindset... or I was
being an obnoxious A$$ to anyone and everyone.
Would that not allow me to be banned and think about what I did if I wanted
to stay a part of the community...

Being a Member of this Forum is not a Right... it is a Privilege given to us by
the Administration...
That Forum Administration can ban me anytime they want... for any reason
and there is nothing I can do about it...

I don't fully agree that it's a privilege rather than a right. The members make up this forum, especially the ones who keep it clean as possible.

Sure you can be removed for no reason but there might be a few legal ways to sue, with the right lawyer of course.

Haha on a funny note... wouldn't it be crazy if KipKay sued for all the bashing? We would have to find where he lives :gun:

Right, but don't forget that, after all, this is not our property ..... i mean, we help c0ld in keeping the place "clean and warm" :p , and at the same time we use the forum and take advantages from it (informations diffusion, helps, questions and answers, ideas, and, last but not least, a good place for talk about one of our hobbies) ..... but this is still property of c0ld .....

That what i mean is, as example ..... if you have someone at your home that help you keep it clean and in order ..... do you agree that is his "right" to say you who of your friends can come at your home and who not ? ..... i suppose that you can hear his opinions, about this, but at the end, only YOU decide, not him, right ? :)

Sure you can be removed for no reason but there might be a few legal ways to sue, with the right lawyer of course.

I'm sorry to say this, but i think there's no way for this ..... being a public place where you are not an employee or a collaborator, with its own rules that you have accepted when you subscribed, i think there is no way for sue anyone if you get banned for no reasons, no matter what lawyer you find (i mean, usually, the fact that you, signing in, accept the terms of use, where normally is stated that the admin/owner may decide to delete posts or ban members at his sole discretion, is enough for "keep safe" the admin/owner from any legal problems about this, but i'm sure about this only for the laws of my country, Italy, so if in some other countries there's different laws, i may also be in error with this ..... you need to check with your country laws, for be sure).

Haha on a funny note... wouldn't it be crazy if KipKay sued for all the bashing? We would have to find where he lives :gun:

LOL ..... i have seen only few of his "tutorials", on youtube, but i suppose you're right ..... at least, for the ones that i've seen, probably he need 5 or 6 works for pay all the bills :p
