Hi, thought I'd make a thread about the Oculus Rift. Does anyone here own a developer kit, or plan to buy the final version?
The Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset. It's basically a screen strapped to your face with correction optics and head tracker built in, to make you feel like you actually are inside a different world instead of just looking at a monitor. I have a developer kit and I must say, the effect is truly astonishing. I definitely believe this is the future of 3D applications such as gaming or simulations.
Currently only the developer kit is for sale. This is a proof of concept device, it works but it's lacking in features and the resolution is quite horrible (800*640 pixels per eye). The final version is supposed to come out sometime 2014, and will feature a MUCH better display, positional tracking as well as rotational, and much more. I can't wait!

I'm actually working on a laser related program that uses the Oculus rift. I believe it will be very cool and fill a brand new niche gap. More info to follow!
