Oculus Rift

Maybe not. FB does have quite a bit of money to expedite development.

On the flip side, idk how in the world they can monetize it.

The same way they monetize everything! Selling user data & intrusive ads.

I'm going to wait for a 4k version of the Rift until i even think of dropping cash.

I'll stay at 5040x1050 till then ;)

I was going to say you have too many icons on your desktop, then looked at mine. Almost as bad :tinfoil:

Heh, I guess I'm guilty of dumping everything on my desktop. Its just as cluttered as my mind :)

To paraphrase Einstein, if a cluttered desktop, is a sign of a cluttered mind, what then does an empty desktop say about it's owner? :P

I am cautiously optimistic with the facebook news. Here is a few quotes from Palmer at reddit:

1) We can make custom hardware, not rely on the scraps of the mobile phone industry. That is insanely expensive, think hundreds of millions of dollars. More news soon.

2) We can afford to hire everyone we need, the best people that fit into our culture of excellence in all aspects.

3) We can make huge investments in content. More news soon.

We promise we won't change. If anything, our hardware and software will get even more open, and Facebook is onboard with that.

This deal specifically lets us greatly lower the price of the Rift.

This lets us make CV1 everything we want it to be, which is going to drive much larger sales and adoption.

Even in the eventuality that the purchase by Facebook means we won't ever see anything again of the Oculus Rift, it won't be that big of a loss. It only looks that way because the Oculus Rift has been hyped to hell and back, but there are other companies making head-mounted displays out there.

I bought an HMZ-T1 head-mounted display from Sony in 2012, and although its FOV is not as wide as with the Oculus Rift, the resolution is much higher, and I can use it with both my PC and my PS3, to play games and watch movies in 3D (I use the iz3D drivers with the PC because I have Windows 7). At the moment, I prefer it to the Oculus Rift.

The HMZ isn't really comparable, it lacks all the features that make the Oculus more than just a screen that you strap to your face.. Sure, it's good and probably better than the rift dev kit at what it is meant for, like watching movies, but it's not good for virtual reality. Without head tracking and high FOV you simply won't get the sense of presence which is what the rift is all about.
Also, with the consumer version of the rift being 1440p or higher, it will even be better than the HMZ resolution-wise, I think watching movies on the rift, for example while simulating a cinema environment, will be a very popular thing to do.

If I play a game in the "classic" way, which is sitting in a chair with a joypad (or a mouse and keyboard) in my hands, I get a higher sense of presence with the HMZ. FOV-wise, I would rate the Rift as 9.5/10 (the last time I tried it, which is 3 days ago, I noticed that if you look down enough, there's a zone that isn't covered) and the HMZ as 7/10 (lower, but still good and immersive). The higher resolution also contributes to an increase of immersivity, because it lets me see details that would not be visible otherwise.
However, I agree that this would change with a higher resolution for the Rift and a way to move in the real world that mirrors what I do in the game world (for example, walking on an omnidirectional treadmill and holding a gun controller).

After the whole Duke Nukem Forever affair, I wholeheartedly refuse to get hyped up before anything is released. Mind you, that doesn't mean I will bash the consumer version before it's released, because that would still be falling for the hype, just in the opposite way. It just means that I won't judge it until after I tried it, and I will remind people not to disregard the possibility that it won't live up to expectations.

This might be a matter of personal preference, but I'd rather just have a virtual space where the only thing in existence is the screen where the 3D movie is projected and the rest is uniform black, so I get a better illusion to be inside the movie, as opposed to be in a theater watching the movie.

There is another HMD VR that exits on Kickstarter:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/805968217/antvr-kit-all-in-one-universal-virtual-reality-kit

it`s china made, its fairly cheap with all the features..
but the backer await for more video update wether its real or not..
I think its real but might be overspecs, as the creator show many short videos..
Good to have another VR in the market, gonna play doom again... :gun:

It will be real....this Summer......I have been waiting for this for....years !

High FOV....110 IIRC....and finally some good res !!! This summer....or next....this will be coupled with my Quad copter. Should be a real hoot !!
Eventually...I will add the Head tracker....just MORE $$

For most of this summer....I will fly standard...and just get used to the ship..Sporting a Naza FC with GPS....should be good !!! We will see !!

Lite'em Up CDBEAM=======>

I am pretty skeptical to their claims. They are using very misleading info when describing the headset and comparing it to for example the rift. It also does not have all the features of the rift. It is missing proper positional tracking which is a big one, and the screen has no low persistence which will cause motion blur.

As a user on reddit said:

There is no actual, clear gameplay footage anywhere. Just short clip of prototype translation. We need a proper gameplay demonstration.

They claim to do positional tracking through dead reckoning. This has not been done reliably for body motion and there is no proper footage of this. Proper tech video or I call bullshit. If it can't do proper positional tracking, any movement will trigger horrible simulation sickness. Grab your buckets, gentlemen.

1920x1080 that is VERY misleadingly described as to suggest that this is per eye. (effective resolution at given 4:3 aspect ratio is 960x720)

Page claims ALL pc, xbox, playstation, android games are supported without changes, and any device with HDMI works straight away. Impossible claims and flat out lies like this are common. Anything resulting from this is not VR. Bullshit.

Q&A reads: "Does your headset emit any electromagnetic radiation? Will it be harmful?" "The headset DOES NOT emit or receive any radio waves. So don't worry!" This is just wrong. What about the wireless headtracking data? WHDI? Those are radio waves. It's clearly not dangerous, but I don't see why this nonsense is necessary.

Yes, i know they might make typical chinese promo words.. Like selling SD-303 laser <1000mW, where it actually 100-200mW.. These too might be overspecs, but i think still it will works.. the price is cheap..
