New Stock of Overspec 5mW Green **3/2011 batch is here!**

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

Most drivers convert extra currant into heat, and heat kills. The only unit that was successfully boosted by adding more current was the Dilda v1. And they changed the driver recently, so even that wont work anymore.

In your opinion would this unit fail again with 3.7V from one 10440 instead of 3V from 2 AAA's?

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

No, it should work fine. Keep in mind though, at full charge the 10440s are 4.2V. So it may lessen the life some, but not much. You'll probably get bored with it before it starts to die.

Re: I need a simple red module

i think he is talking ebay but i think i remember a member here selling... overspec green lasers not shure though

Re: I need a simple red module

Are you using it for point recognition or something like that? A red would probably work fine, though webcams will still "see" green better than other colors because of their Bayer filter. Often, though, the laser dot can be bright enough that it won't even look like "color"--just an overly bright spot on the wall, so you might want to do some filtering before-hand. That does, however, depend on how far away it is, etc.

I'd grab a cheapo red (even 5mW) and then work up from there. You can get a dirt-cheap module for $4 from Hightechdealz, free shipping too. Greens can be power-hungry and need to be in a sufficient heatsink. They're also quite a bit larger than a simple low-power red.

Or this: 5mw 532nm Green Beam Laser Pointer Pen Stylish P1 - BuyinCoins.com

I've bought from them before, thought not too much lasers. I heard their cases aren't the best quality, but I'm sure just the module inside would be fine, plus they're the cheapest source I know of. You can just not use the battery compartment if you want, and wire up to the module itself if you need long run times. You won't need any heatsinking for a 5mW module.

And yes, both to visual eye as well as webcams, 532nm is the closer to the middle of our visible spectrum (400nm to 700nm) than red is (650nm) thus will seem brighter per mW of power.

Hey, already got a response and sent payment via paypal!:)

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

I just got mine today and they're the same way. It's not a dud, it seems that is how most of these simple 405's look off of a non-fluorescent surface. I've heard it has mostly to do with how close to UV it is - it's almost as if you can't quite focus your eye's on the 'spot', right?

Kind of. The reason I say this is, when viewing from a distance, 30-35', it appears like I originally stated. If I get closer to the spot on the wall, While leaving the laser at 30-35' away, the smudge/pattern/whatever looks like a fairly clean dot with some difraction rings around it.

The oddest phenomonon is this...

I have vertical astigmatism in my eyes which makes a kind of ghost image of
the dot for other wavelength lasers I own (532nm & 650nm) appear above or below the REAL dot. It's almost like a vertical line unless I squint my eyes. If I don't squint, I see something that looks like a line with 2 bright spots at either end. I know it's my eyes since rotating the laser does nothing to the displayed image. But, cocking my head from side to side, makes the line effect rotate from vertical to whatever angle my head is cocked to.

OK, with this 405nm laser...
The effect seems reversed. Instead of a vertical distortion, it's horizontal!
If I rotate the laser..no affect...however, if I cock my head, the distortion/line appears vertical.
I'm beginning to wonder if the effect i'm noticing is a combination of my astigmatism and some weird feature based on the 405nm wavelength and my brain is trying to make sense of it.

Very strange effect!

I'll never be a good beam analyser with eyes like this.:(

Re: WTB: Anyone got an old 593.5nm/589nm they're done with?

When the 30mW 589nm pen is <$400, I´m gonna buy it (now it´s $600). Hopefully this is going to happen before :san:
Hate to burst your bubble, but...

Rigel-HV 30mW (589nm) - $989
RIGEL-10 (10-19mW, 593.5nm) - $699

But if you're interested in some 593.5nm's on the cheap, I do have some great news: the LG GB is a go! Working on the thread as we speak

p.s. Aryntha, you've got mail :yh:

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

I see something similar to this with mine - at about 30 feet there seem to be a dozen separate dots, yet leaving the laser in the same place and getting closer to the far wall, the effect diminishes. At 2 feet from the far wall, so approx 28 feet from the laser, the dot is actually quite clean - at that range there's no sign at all of the multiple dots I saw from farther away. Is this the same as what you are seeing?

I don't see anything similar from my PHR.

Very similar experience here as well.

:thanks:

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

as everyone is saying before me... $9? I got two pairs coming.

Re: 5mW 405nM $9 on eBay

I can't complain for the price. I'm just trying to figure out what I, and others, are actually seeing, and why it looks as it does when viewed from a distance as opposed to close up.
I may order another set since the 532nm I received has a dimming problem.
It might just be my first laser tear down instead of sending it back for replacement:eg:

I don't feel as bad tearing into a defective laser as I would a good working one.

I remember my first tear down... I was so happy when I actually saw it light up without the casing! Now I have a pile of dead lasers and I'm not afraid to add to it!

I still have some reallllllly old red <1mw that work, and the "spotting" is huge on them (very speckled on walls around the dot). I don't think it's wavelength related, but possibly lens or PS related?
