Impressive shots, Devin! I'll set something similar up as soon as I have deboxed my new meter!
 
Yeah, as Devin pointed out, getting macro shots with a standard digital camera is a breeze.   I'm sure most everybody here has some small magnifying lenses that they can use, I have some I took from a old binocular that I tore apart and I just stick it right in from of the aperture with some sticky putty. And you can get incredibly close to things and get a very focused shot.


Here is a couple pictures I took a few years back just using a cheap binocular lens on a cheap-o digital camera.

You know those little white flowers that are more like weeds?  The little puffy round ones, well, this is a close up shot of one.

And my all time favorite close of up a simple small weed in my backyard.   As you can see, the focus margin is very thin.

These were all taken with my cheap Kodak point and shoot digital camera and a small magnifying lens. So getting macro shots is easy. Just hold the focus down on the camera, then manually move it back or forward to get a clear shot.
 
I'll try to get a few shots of the diode's rear end tomorrow, but it may not be easy. Until then, all I can report is that the barcode on my 1st diode takes up about the same space as the base of one of the pins, and the others are sitting unopened, with the mylar ribbon left on them. Full photo shots and plots to follow soon, sorry for the delay!

Those fuzzy pics gave me headache, i seriously wonder how much these baby will cost in couple months.


Hows the optics compared to a 6x sled?
 
There wasn't much for optics as seen in the 1st post pictures...

I didn't even harvest any! ;D

I'm sure there are a couple of things worth saving, but some were broken already. I'm pretty sure that who ever got these sleds had to break or damage them in order to get them released as 'throw aways'...

Hey Dave, I just got a true macro lens for my DSLR.  I can take pics if you want.

Previously I used my 20x loupe and the girlfriend's digital camera which had a pretty good macro-mode to get my close up of the dead diode lighting up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLPZ4g3bhIU ), but it was limited to 2MP.  My new macro lens can get 1:1 magnification from about 1" at 6MP and no magnification distortion  :)

SWEET! I'll send them to you after I get a look at them. Maybe you can get a clear enough picture that someone can decode the bar code(s) or at least get others something to compare to.

hey Jay,

does the diode work with the microflex drive  ( i ask because daguin posted that the 8X from pioneer had problems with the microflex drive from Lava, if i understood it right )? If Yes then i know which diode my microflex drive will get  ;D
 
Yes, even if you get a 'freak' one like I had, which was very similar to Dave's 8X diode in power and voltage, the FlexDrive will do fine up to about 300mA's per Dr. Lava.

I had mine at 280mA's using a FlexDrive. At this current, it measured 5.6 volts and the FlexDrive had to draw 675mA's from my 3.0 volt Energizer e2 Lithium primary battery to supply it with the 280mA's at 5.6 volts...
