Max output for a 635 nm laser, while affordable?

I will - of course - though I'm waiting on the host from Ray J Neal first. I haven't been able to get in touch with him for a few days, so I'm actually not sure if they've shipped yet. So I may not be building this until next week anyway.

Oh. Anyway, what are you going to use as lens? I was looking at 650-G-1, but I'm still not so sure to pay $60 for a small piece of optics, that other people (Aixiz etc.) can sell similar for $10 and less. Even the LASER66 405-G-2 lens, that give only about a mW or two less are half the price. Also, I was looking at Jayrob flashlights, and not so sure either - if Mohrenberg can sell a basic host with a big heatsink for $12, what makes the Jayrob hosts so pricy then?

I'm going to use a red-coated acrylic from Qumefox.

Here's a teaser:

Are you sure they will withstand 170mW+? I know that Aixiz doesn't reccomend their acrylic over 50mW. Also, I heard something about Aixiz red coated glass lens, do you know anything about these?

I've had Aixis red coated lenses - not hard to find actually.

I think the acrylics are fine for up to 300, certainly 170 is ok - and they seem to actually transmit a bit more light than the aixiz red glass lenses when I've used them with LOCs.

I have a new stupid pipe dream diode.....not ready to disclose what it is yet. In fact, I'm really tempted to put my quest for yellow on hold, because yellow is well.... *just so common now*.... lol

I have my sights set on another something really special!
(teaser much?)

Those Acrylic AR coated are fine. I have one in my 309mW Red Key chain Laser.:)

I have been using these lenses for some time now.>1 year. They have never failed on me.

You should have no issue at ~170mW in power.

Just letting you guys know, those cheap 635 diode listings on alibaba aren't legit, there's no contact information.

I know!
Its divergence is 7.5 x 35.
For reference if the 1W 445 (9mm) on Nichia's site is essentially the same specs as the 445s we use, then their divergence is 12 x 40.

So this read is a bit worse (I think?). I'm not a science / optics person. But I gather that a common problem with multi-mode reds is the "broken line". I still think that if these were intended for a projector, they'd need that not to be a problem.

High powered reds aren't lines so much as squares. I'll find a picture in a second. It does depend on the diode, but you get the gist of what I'm saying, right?

Edit: This is an FAC'd but as of yet uncollimated 635nm diode.

Edit2: This is MISTERWILLINGs picture, not mine.

Nice! Thanks for digging it up... nowhere near smooth as a regular diode through. I heard that these Mitsubishi .5W (The failed PL GB) are indeed making horrible lines.

Also, Mario, how is the business going? Are you going to stock some up as you said? Since my timezone makes me miss all the Radiant Alphas, at least I would get that diode from you.

EDIT: 100th post! Yay!

It's going well but I've got a ton of stuff on my plate this semester and can't devote as much time as I want to Radiant. I've shipped off parts to help me assemble some more Alphas.

Arghhh.... I'm really tempted to put my 635 HL63133DG into a module now, and just give it a show.... the correct host isn't here yet though.... *thinking*

Well if you want to pay $170 and some other people get on board I could probably make something happen.
