^^^ It doesn't necessarily have to be a laser you are building since laser pens most often are just modified. But it has to be the real value of the laser. If I buy a used laser for say $100 because I found a bargain and the real value of the laser os $300 than that doesn't count.

If I buy a $100 laser brand new in a store, and I can proof that is the value of the laser, than it should be a valid entry.

Here we are trying to determine the best UNDER $100 laser, that you can ether build for $100 (all the parts needed to have a functional laser) or BUY for $100...

It's stated on the OP that obviously you need to have the laser.

I consider that a stock laser won't have a chance, a modified laser is the way to go here. But let's not fool the contest on proposing costy lasers and saying they are under $100 since we are all well aware of the costs of the parts...

I thought it had to be $100 total cost of parts to make? Not what you got it for? In that case i have a 2.8W that i technically got for free?? lol well a trade.. But the original item that i swapped i got for free.. so that means i am the winner with a $zero 2.8W 445.... ! :)

Agreed on the value Norbyx, but I think Mods should count as a build. Most of the handhelds are modded flashlights of one kind or another, and sometimes a lot of work goes into making a mod turn out right. You may be right though, that's just my opinion.

Yeah .... well what I ment is that if I post a stock laser like the one you purchase on a store without even one slight mod it would probably not win the contest, even though it should be allowed to be in the contest if it meets the requirements.

Let's face it ... we don't build lasers we assemble parts, there might be some of us that do more than that by making a custom host or a custom driver but the vast mayority here just assembles lasers.

I agree that modifying a laser is a great job, and I am about to modify one of my lasers to be able to have a slight chance here.

Sounds fair Norbyx, when I saw your Kryton DJNY, I was like wut? Congrats on the great deal you got, but most would have a hard time matching that beautiful polished host and 2W diode you got there.

Overspec Fasttech 50mW 532nm module and a Survival Lasers stainless steel unmarked host.

This is, in my opinion, the most elegant host ever. With one of the best colors, to boot. I want to put a 520nm in it soon!

Good luck to you, Weedy. Perhaps you could edit your post with the prices of parts, including the module, host, heatsink, and any extras? Just to make it easy on folks.

Perhaps we allow DJNY's submission with an asterisk stating it was bought used. That would give the voting public the option to make an informed decision on what they chose. I doubt many veteran members would give much credence to a bought-used laser that's worth well over $100 in total parts.

I don't like the idea of a used, bought-cheap laser being in this contest either, but I don't want to kick someone out of the competition because the rules weren't clear.

No need to kick out anyone... but it was quite obvious (to me) how the contest was going to work . I believe that a veteran like DJNY can submit another laser with the required specs.... if you allow one you allow anyone... So for me it shouldn't be allowed to offer "that" specific laser to the contest.

Easy, just edit the post and put another laser .... no one gets offended...

DJNY's submission could have been less than 100...

Host: 25 Dollars via moh's GB
Diode: 45 Dollars via DTR
Module: 2 Dollars via moh's module GB
Driver: 10 dollar linear
Lens: 8 Dollars
2 x 16340's @ 2.30 ea off eBay.

That is 94.60 Dollars. Seems doable, I would give the man the benefit of the doubt.

Host was $30, diode $35, lense $5, driver $10

Ok, wasn´t build by myself cause I´m not able to build a laser :)


Personal value of this laser: >$550 (that would be an offer I would consider selling it)
It was the first laser host ever made here at LPF

Custom Mag build

Making your own custom parts is your time, but not any money out of pocket other than the material...

This build can use a C or D Mag, with an X-Drive to put out over 3 Watts if wanted...

My proof of concept is a C Mag with a Jib driver at 2 Watts output: (1.8 with cheaper lens listed)

* Host - $20
* 445 diode - $45
* AixiZ 445 lens - $10
* AixiZ module - $3
* Driver - $14
* Custom parts - Made at cost of material - $7

Total - $99 dollars.

With a D Mag, other options can fit. Such as a voltage monitor, key switch, or both! :cool: (that will of course take you over the $100 bucks though)

P.S. I do hope you guys know that there is no way that I can sell this for $100 bucks! This is just to show what can be done with that money if you have the tools and so forth...

Well I got a host for a cheap deal, so are we going real value, or what it should normally cost? Since Norbyx is saying we shouldn't count deals...

Sweeet build Jayrob :gj: If you built it or modified it, it should be allowed with the condition that there is some transparency. Let the voters know what went into it. Time and creativity, skill level should all be apparent. A custom build like Jayrob's should have an equal chance against Pman's Viagra laser :D
