Kipkay and pot-modding..

Pot modding a laser is almost definitely a bad idea except in some very limited circumstances. That's a well-known fact around here, and should be common sense to his viewers...
common sense? overrated. or so his viewers think..
:undecided:

I give up on trying to teach them. Revision to do, and 9 hours in which to do it (before the dreaded "you may begin", that is...)

Good luck arguing with them (via PM or otherwise) - even if you make your points well, they'll still pretend that they won the argument (this actually happened twice earlier) on some unrelated point, and go on watching him cluelessly.

Lol... yeah. Idc, it makes me giggle.

The moment I saw this on You Tube my first thought was LPF is gonna be all over this. And look....

LOL

I got to get some of those 532 nm diodes and pot mod them up to about one watt! That should be safe right?

/sarcasm

The only thing you'll be able to burn by pot modding is the diode/driver and it'll be over fast and rather lame.

'tis true, but gotta admit, it was him and his youtube videos that rekindled my
interest in lasers and what made me come here.;)

The real shame here is that a regular average person with no laser experience, probably at best seen a dollarstore laser pointer. will probably go,

Cool! how to turn my lame ass pointer into a burning laser!

And then follow his video due to popularity, apparent simplicity of instruction and lack of research.

I dont expect someone without any laser or electronic experience to know what a DPSS laser is, how it works, component ratings and values, and what happens when you exceed what the parts where rated for.

Long story short. Due to the popularity of his videos, more poor pen lasers will continue to get busted when you try to mod them, and so on so forth... but what does kipgay care, more money for him from views.

Lol same here. After I saw his lighter laser I decided to take a look around for high powered lasers but got overwhelmed and confused. I searched laser pointer forums in google hoping to find a laser forum. Man I don't know what I would have done if I didn't find this forum. I had no idea that laser safety goggles even existed at the time.

Same here man, and I've been on LPF since 08. However I've been interested in lasers long before I came here. But it was his DVD mini mag light hack that brought me here. Before that I never knew there was a red laser diode in DVD burners, I always thought it was IR. Nor did I know you could extract the diode, buy an Aixiz laser housing, and make it into a focused laser. For a 1000 people that see his laser vids maybe 10 join here, and of those, a couple take the time to learn the science and become active members. Like me.

About 3-4 years ago Kipkay actually had some really cool videos and DIY mods and stuff. This was way before he became so popular on You Tube. But now he's sponsored by Make and getting paid by You Tube so his videos aren't in the true DIY nature any more. They're tailored more towards little kids in an effort just to get views. Now hes giving away Arctics and other shit just to get subs. Perfect sellout IMO.

The sad part is, is there are so many comments on his laser vids that think it's a good idea. And Kip makes no mention of safety.

Once in a blue moon hes got a somewhat cool idea, but more often they're crap.

I have to admit that Kipkay's ps3 phaser rekindled my interest in lasers, which then brought me to LPF. Now that I know the truth and science about lasers, I look back and see how much of an idiot he is. I'm happy that the situation brought me here though :;). I brought up safety issues on one of his pages the other day and the kip worshippers flamed me:rolleyes:

That's it. Time to make a kipkay parody video!
Just need to figure out how to put a vid on youtube....

Alright! Go, dude!
Whats there to figure out?
You can use most any format, limit is 10 minutes, and you need to
have a youtube or google account, that's it, easy as pie.

Flagged the video for "other dangerous content" I'm happy for kipkay to do videos about lasers he just really needs to do it properly and promote the safety side of it.
