Review JETLASERS: two 445nm and two 635nm by two authors.

EDIT- the 445 is FS- the 635 is sold but I have another-Pl-C PM for more details

.. Phoenix77 'Rob' is having PC problems ATM and anyway, as I had never seen a black EQ so he has sent these two for me to test and compare-and he will chime in.

_______________________________________

Once we get most of the findings posted here I am expanding this review by comparing and contrasting these two JLs with a the newer ProPL-C-(2W 445)
and the PL-C 635/400- -- Its that time of the year when it seems we are always short on cash so- its very likley we will need to sell all four of these.
All four have been treated kindly with VERY low time -good as when brand new-IMHO
************************************************
First the PL-E 445 1W

then the EQ series 653nm400mw in the black host.
The EQ is the newest laser from JETLASERS.
**********************
Lots of pics and LPM graphs will be added ASAP( for the last four days both MY PCs are working very poorly and my laptop with the graphing soft has crashed--
also I have that queasy feeling i get just be for a cold or God forbid the flu gets me.. and yeah- i put off a flu shot this year--my bad! so please bear with me. TY
************************************************************

The Pl-E line is no longer being offered- Except as 'close-out'
This is the silver-grey color- It meters out nicely around 1100mW.
PL-Es were made to use a second battery tube which made for a considerable extended run time before changing or recharging batts.

AFAIK the diode used in this one is either a M-150 or a A -140 in either case its being underdriven which may keep it running cooler and extend the life of the laser.

Being a very robust diodes these can handle long duty runs before a rest is needed- some say continous running is Ok but I tend to err on the side of caution. But a 20min run could be done if it were needed. I will limit any tests to 10 min max.

especially if you are outdoors in 80 % of the USA- LOW ambient temp plays a big role. Please see the pics where i have done my best to show you what you will see if you buy this one.

There looks to be some very minor reflections off the inner cavity.... atypical-
I have posted one pic with the laser completely un focused- - its not the perfect laser to end up with a perfect dot unless you use some corrective optics- I will measure the beams and add my findings
here is what can be seen at JL.org and from our GB threads-

Very sorry for starting a new thread before I was really ready... I am having some issues with my LPM soft that makes graphs- my internet connections (dial-up if ity were not a PITA when working correctly, and what feels like the beginnins of the flu this morning--

More coming ASAP--Len

AFAIK, Len you're off to a great start on this review. As per JETLASERS, their lasers are well constructed & provide the buyer a considerable bang for buck purchase ! Anyone purchasing a laser of ANY of these JETLASERS MODELS will undoubtedly be VERY HAPPY. I look forward to seeing THEIR reviews here as well.
My BIG THANKS TO JETLASERS FOR PROVIDING THESE UNITS & ALSO TO MY GOOD FRIEND HAKZAW FOR HELPING ME BY COVERING THIS REVIEW FOR ME. THANKS LEN !!!

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

Reserved for text and more pics-
see that reflection off my shed's Al. siding-??
OUCH!

just hit my eye from the side --short exposure less than 200mW even less as its a reflection

-- one of those cases where most glasses would not protect.
I got some 'floaters' and blurry side vision from my left eye but its been an hour and it looks to be going away.. anyway the pics sux- cold out here tonite- the 635 rolled a little and i had a bad angle for seeing it

sorta the same with the 1100mW 445- need tripod too-

the brightest of this set- is the Ti-B 532- its actually TOO bright for JUST 1100mW of 445 and ONLY 500mW of 635.
At any angle-
going back out and start a fire in my pit- so some 'smoked' shots before bed tonite--

its 40F out side and 45F in my kitchen and living room- space heaters in two rooms=..and
my waterbed is heated-- I may be the only member sleeping on one..lol

I wish it was 40°F. here buddy, we had a HIGH today of -3° F. Your temps would be a heatwave for me ! Got over a foot of snow too. Jeez will winter NEVER END ?

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

Its OK/

The floaters are gone.

my friend took a 'hit' while wearing glasses- there was a mirror behind and to his back-
just a green pointer- maybe 40 mW reflected off the mirror and then reflected by lens on the inside of his glasses and THEN into his eye- the glasses are almost the same as a mirror the green was reflected- the laser was static (resting on something) and he was sitting on a stool- so the hit was longer .. prolly every bit of the ,25 seconds before we blink- He got another 'flash' then 'saw' what was happening- he had some floaters for an hour or so too..IIRC..

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

Sorry to hear that Tony-- Just what can you see when you close the good eye?
Did you get it looked at? Our eyes own lenses work against us- thats part of why side shots are not as injurious and there are a few spots on our eyes that are the worst spots to take a hit like the fovea and the optic disc-our 'blind spot' .. anther thing that is quite common it having the rest of the room dark- Dialated pupils open beyond the normal 7mm iris and tha is seen a lot when viewing 405- making it a 'sneakiest' wavelength,, tricking our eyes into max opening.

To those new to lasers 1W sounds harmlees--- after all we can look w/o harm at a 100W lightbulb- but "The brightness of the collimated beam is one billion times greater than the light bulb" (Slineny & Wolbarsht)--

maybe its time and a good idea for a new thread covering much of what is heard at the Laser Safety Officers class-- the 'regular' three day course (iirc $1300) still only touches briefly on many subjects and the one day "ILDA Special LSO Class ($445)given at some LEMS and ILDA conventions is just 6 hours and there is a ton of stuff needed to know and possibly on the exam as that class is way too short - with 2 hours for the exam.

Even if you have zero desire to become a LSO we all benefit with more knowledge- And I spent lots of time searching for info sources and a proper thread could have really saved me time ... time I could have used for study instead of search and MAYBE I would have passed the exam. I get another chance to take it over.. The Power Point presentation is 200 plus slides long.-- I would be happy to run it as i can use more exposure to the topics i was weak in.. the math is the scariest part for me- never has been my strong suit-

It would make an excellent tutorial and we sure have lots of savvy members that can chime in- -- ALSO- the more you know about laser projectors and safe show the more you can appreciate those guys at the show forum and how/why they feel about .5W handhelds-

Laws passed already about outdoor lasers have had a significant impact on laser show companies- so much must be done that like audience scanning most just forget trying anymore- Outdoor shows are pretty much out of the question if you are within 10 miles from an airport- OK ..just where can you go and do an outdoor display that is not near an airport- ?? the laws were passed because of handhelds NOT projectors- follow me?? Its not US, (LPF) its the lasers and those that do the STOOPID - +Like banning guns because bad guys have them-- what about the hunters?- a long standing American tradition-- the money they pay for taxes, permits, stamps and hunting licenses is no small amount and much goes into protecting our native animals.

Lasershow companies have had to defend personal injury lawsuits due to someone bringing a laser pointer to a concert and lasing somebody in the face-- some have been forced to video tape from every angle and of each projector time-stamped to prove where and when the show companies PJs where aimed during the entire display.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

OKAY enough of the serious stuff- heres some fresh pics-

I still didnt actually use a tripod- and a few I took while having a seizure-- BUT the show must go on..

enjoy..

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

I got it looked at and was told time would tell the permanent damage. I have a large cloud I can only see blurred color and movement. Driving has taken some getting used to. Depth perception has suffered. 1.5w direct hit. As soon at I saw blue I snapped my head away, but of course it was too late.
Was a very embarrassing, upsetting, and humbling experience. It was getting a bit better and less uncomfortable, until about two weeks or so ago, it stopped getting better

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

Wow-I often wonder if my many years messing around up close w/ lasers and being way to close to the woofers at 30 some concerts (from side, back and front stage--as a photorapher- NEVER gave a thought to wearing earplugs.. duh not smart..
So I am lucky ..
That I am not half blind and totallly deaf- I do suffer from a constant buzzing- ringing in my ears and tend to have music playing every where I can to stop the titinitus--
000000000000

talk about serious and buzz kill-
Hope many learn from Tony and the others who have had accidents and shared what has happened. Instead of being embarassed they went in favor of safety to those who so far have maybe just been lucky--
its part of being pro-active about laser safety- I know all Tony'as friends will keep good thoughts and hope for his recovery. :undecided::cryyy:

more pics coming- here a stock one from JL

************ Laptop messed up= ,must get drivers into another- and Google Chrome sez that they are infected- SO did some LPMing witha six year old LB1 long overdue to be calibrated- i think it reads low- anyway- here are some shots of the meter- I should have the drivers and graphs asap.

Any purchase made from me $200 or more gets a free
22X22 X22mm dichronic X 'cube' nice little optic - may stock them to sell- I can get a better price for lot purchase - and re-sell at <$10 each.
Pics included below show a very bright LED light and the sun hitting each of the four sides- these are four prisms glued together into a cube.. AFAIk they are not used in laser projectors as they are better ways-- also see some pics taken with a laser-
Pics with the two JETLASERS Lasers in this review- Out doors slight fog-
no smoke. and four cubes randomly stacked.-- You can see by the pics how well these two match each other in (our preceived) brightness-
For a balance the green should be around 50mW-as even the Ti-B 532/100 drowns all the red and even dominates the blue-

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

+Not enough room in that post for the last cube pic-so its here as well as the others.
sorry to string this review out like this but both Rob and I have had some bad luck with our PCs. -- still need the driver to do graphs--- I took the numbers for the beam sizes but Not sure the divergences I got are correct.. bbl with that-

Note: the switch on the Pl-E 445 1W somethimes sticks- prolly why they (JL) went with the metal switches for the ProPL-E line. I will see if I can get it working smoother-before its sold. -- Just to see- I completely de-focused the 635/400- and it took about 13 1/2- turns to reach the end- awesome red flashlight!! I will get a pic for you- and anytime you see another with this shape you will know its likely a C-Mount diode- these do NOT come as a DOT- its close to a square shape- with wings on each side.
Some of these used in projectors are made better with correction optics. FOR sure a laser to be respected- you cannot measure or examine beams/spots w/o PROPER EYE WEAR- I use a 19$ digital caliper-

I want to do these over before I can say they are correct-
but here are my notes from last night...

Since both the JLs do not have round beams I have done done each three ways-- an average of the two and each by themselves.

not sure this is the best way do measure when the spot is not round or a perfect square -
I am sure somebody will chime in and correct me.
Also I have placed here the numbers from the JL.com site specs.
First the PL-E 445/1W

At Aperture 1.73mmX4.3 and at 6.502 M --7.62 mm X 8.0mm
so if i average (add both and /2) = 3.015 mm
and 7.81mm I get .737mrad
using just the long axis
4.3mm and 8.0mm= .569 mrad
using the short 1.73mm and 7.62mm= .906mrad

EQ 635

400mW at ap. 4.14mm X 6.60mm = .378mrad
at 6.502 M 5.49mm X 11.86mm = .980 mrad

WTH these cant be right-
allow me one do-over PLZ

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

DID you try jetlasers.org ?? you need to always add the 's' as it is Jetlasers not jetlaser- somebody grabbed that domain name and prolly side tracks those going there by mistake or gets ad revenue every time its loaded.

in front is a Ti-B (Titainium - a JL exclisive) no new ones are being made
behind it is the Pl-C then Pl-D then Pro PL-D (My fav host and the one they quit on very quickly)
and at the back is AFAIK the Worlds longest commercially made handheld the PL-E with Second tube. I took this pics before the Pro PL-E came out and subsquently the 'EQ' series.

this review is of the EQ 635 400 and a Pl-E 445 1W.( from Phoenix77)
next I will compare these two with the Pl-C 635 400 and a Pro-Pl-E 445.

All four will then be offered For sale (the EQ is spoken for)

I have several Gen.1(14450) NOS Ti-B 532s from 105 to 128 mW prices is 1$ per mW.All 'new' all under JL warranty/
I will be listing all these and more JLs at our JL thread started by Gray(the newer one).

hak

Re: JETLASERS EQ 635/400mW & 1W 445 Pl-E

Hey Tony, is there a thread up about that somewhere? I must have been away from the forum when this occurred.

To anybody else. If you have never owned a TITANIUM laser check into it for sure. I will never forget my Jetlasers Ti-A 250mW 532nm Laser. What a beast and so well built too!
