It is Here.!!!!! 300mW "635nm" Mitsubishi.....

Hey Guys...

Today I build my first 300mW 635nm Diode into an C6 Host, and I knew they are multimode and are even worse then the 445, but my Diode has something odd: When the beam is focused I get a second dot. I cleaned the Diode a thousand times now, also changes Lenses (Aixiz Red Glass, Acrylic Lens) but this appears every time its focused...
The output without a lens looks pretty normal, so I think its coming from the diode itself...

The second picture is at about 4-5 meters away, most splash is gone at this range, but the second dot is still there... At bigger distances its also still visible and pretty big...

Is this common with the 300mW diode or have I just got a bad sample? I can live with a multimode, but two in one housing is to much :D.

This dot is likely a reflection off of the inside of your focusing lens. Are you certain that you have you diode pressed in straight. Sometimes if your diode is shining into the lens at an angle this can occur. Check to see your diode is lined up properly.
 





Well, a few monthes into this, is there any way to get a better beam from these in a handheld? I'm currently running mine in a handheld thru a G2 lens. It's set at 700mA and getting 490mW. I'm happy with the power but would be willing to sacrifice a little to get the beam focused.

The only info I have found was for correcting them in labs or projectors.

I have found an optic lens that can make the beam alot tighter. However its not doing any correction. But you will get a much better beam. I promise.

The dot "Line" will be nearly have the size "NEARLY" of an Aixiz acrylic lens.

There $20 PM me If you want to try. They are pre mounted into a lens nut.
If your not happy i will take it back.:)

Power loss will only be ~50mW compare to an Aixiz 3 element glass lens.

However it will be a big difference comparing to the G2. YOU can Up the currant if you choose to balance this out.

I run all my 635 at ~ 1A.

Or you can try to integrate C lenses in your handheld.

So, leaving the driver set for 700mA, I could probably expect an output of around 300mA?

If you mean 300mW not 300mA then yes you are correct.

Here is what you can expect:

The Calipers are open to the size of an Aixiz Acrylic lens would be and the Dot "Line" inside it is from my lens. This shows you how much better it is.:

All i can say is if you dont really care about the power drop, you will :drool: comparing the beam size to the lens you are using now.:san:

Yep mW. Duh.

Hmmm. ok, if I'd have a 30% or so power loss but the resulting spot would be 30% or so smaller then then concentrated beam should seem as bright as the G-2 beam. So then I could save the G-2 for a 405 or 445 build by replacing it with this one for $20.

Sounds interesting.

Now all I need to do is build up some bank.

The beam is correctable with Cylinderical lenses.... Drlava has some small ones that will fit in a Guidesman 21 size modified host. This WILL work....I just have not gotten around to building it yet....I will post a beam shot of the bench set up by the weekend. HUGE improvement...about 3~4 % loss of power thru the cylinderical lenses...roughly 1.2 mRAD divergence with the standard 3X lava set-up....almost as good as a 445LD thru an O-like collimation lens. BEAM

Hey CDB haven't seen you over here for a little bit, Ive also got a set up with DR lava C lenses that is going to go in a handheld Dave's lens etc and pretty close to finish the custom heatsink rails, however not everyone is going to want to mess with that.

Its a B*tch and you know it. ON the table its not that hard but in a handheld its very hard. Ive had to restart 2 times already because i was off center in my handheld Not restart correction but restart the machining. Could be my mistakes though.:(

Plus Price. 20$ for an Easy fix "Please Note the lenses is not doing any correction" is not bad. all your doing is screwing in a lens compare to hours and hours of setup.

A C lens setup in a handheld is going to run you near ~$150 with custom heatsink, Mount & lenses if not more. Not many can afford that.

Ive been fallowing on PL and been meaning to post some of my progress over there but i keep get drifted away in reading.:p

Looking forward to seeing your set up in the handheld.:beer: Ive been waiting to see it.:wave: I should have some live pictures within a week or so of the final setup of mine.:)

Lazerrer.....YES....I agree with you 100% !!! To C-lens correct will cost $$$ for sure....And the short fL collimation lenses make alignment even more demanding !!!....And add to that the precise positioning that the Cylinderical lenses need to be in....NOT Easy...and NOT cheap....but possible...I think !!
If you have an End Mill (and a Lathe would be nice too)....you can bring your design to life !! If not....well...you are more or less piss'in up a rope !!! hahaha... I have been very consumed with determining the best optics for a projector application for the G71. I think we are there....just alittle more to prove !! Sometimes designs look good on the CAD screen....BUT....when you go to build'em....that's when unforseen problems arise....especially when scaling things down to fit the hand-held format !!! Time will tell. Later...BEAM
 
Here's a question -

When we're dealing with commercial multi-mode diodes like the MITS 300s or the 445s, are they coming with FAC lenses? I presume not, because FACs generally get one of the axes to almost no divergence.

So - has anyone looked into FACing our common multimodes?

I never thought about it but i do have a FAC that was on a Red diode C Mount that never worked. "The diode never worked"

I wonder how hard it would be and would you need a microscope.?

I KNow Pontiac has done it to an IR C mount.

I dont even know how to attempt it.

If someone is willing and think they can do it i can send them the FAC.

Wannaburn tried FAC'ing a 445, but I think he couldn't get the alignment right.
 
I would not think i can pull it off. I can try but i would rather give it to someone else that knows they can do it.

I had a talk about FACing the blues and reds AND C-mount reds with two FACing companies a year ago. While they have done 61633s with excellent results, minimum orders are 250 to 1000 pieces at 10$or more a piece if you supply the diodes. They would prefer a 3000 piece order. The Nichia Blues and the high power reds are out for technical reasons, save for some C-Mount RED devices. They then will NOT ship the diodes unless they weld a new, custom, can onto the diode.

It took two weeks just to get them to answer my calls, all of them are busy doing tel-com and DOD diodes and have more work then they can handle. So much for FACing.

I had a client who wanted 500 pieces done. That was not going to happen, not even a prototype.

One FACing company did sell some 35 mW 633s to MI lasers at one time.
They appologized, they got their start doing a few diodes at a time. Would have been glad to help in the old days, but now, small runs are just not worth doing, it takes too long to set up the computers for a run.

You need to fab a block just a bit longer then the diode height from the back of the can. The block is laser spot welded to the back of the can. A microlens with metalization at one end is welded to the block after being positioned by a computerized six axis micropositioner.

A new can is resistance welded on with a custom gas fill added. If you can imagine hundereds of amps for a few seconds being next to your diode, you can understand the grief they have over modding a single 170$ red diode.

If they were not going to pick up 500 pieces for this client, you may safely assume its just not going to happen.
