Idea for a "real" Light Saber, can this be done?






Hi Dave,
agree that the light will continue, I meant just the part in mid-air visible to the naked eye.
And It should be harmless, no million degree plasma involved!
However, why saying it could NOT be done?
What about two lasers that creates an interference pattern that show a stronger wave in one zone and cancels the wave out for the rest of the path?
I have only a paper clip and a chewing gum, so since I am not Mac Guyver I cannot setup an experiment that uses quantum physics wave effects....however is just an idea :-)

YOU might be the one to advance the physics. However, first, you must master that which exists, my young padawan.
I prefer the approach of figuring out the physics after know what I want, otherwise I could risk of ditching something new only because I think I know is impossible :-)

Firsh, a regular speaker vibrate up to 20.000 hz (ok maybe 17-18000), I need few hundred hertz for that (to trick the human eye 24 are enough).
Alternatively, one could think about a lens magnetically suspended in a magnetic tunnel (just like a speaker, but with no friction), you can then adjust the position of the lens in the space with a simple modulation of a signal.
 
I have the solution!! You need to anchor a Mini Black Hole 5' from Your Laser/Plasma generating handle. The beam will definitely terminate at the event horizon. keeping the operator and any other close object from also being terminated by the black Hole will require more tech than is currently available now and for the next 100 years or so. You might wanna leave this one for your great great great great grand kids to work out.
 
The simple answer is that there are a few "Light Saber" companies that use either LED's or electroluminescent tape inside a hard plexiglass/Lexan/polycarbonate rod, and they're actually tough enough you can "spar" with them to some degree.

There is nothing you could develop yourself for $244.99 US that would look as good as one of these, or be as durable, that would use "real lasers".

The side visibility of even a multi-watt laser (That would not fit into a lightsaber sized hilt) would not be as good as a simple stick of plastic lit with a LED, unless you also invested in a smoke machine.

The Mirror at the end is not good- it could reflect back at your laser and kill/harm it or, worse, back at you and blind you.



You DO know that in the movies they can do anything-special efx.

- ps we dont live in movie-world.

IMHO laser sabres- popping matches and burning balloons all falls into the catagory of 'Woop -De-Doo'

build a rgb projector-- THAT is impressive and NOBODY ever asks 'WHY?' when the see it in action.

I think its clear dark4ngels objective is to create something that gives the impression of a light-saber, not to amass a load of comments concerning the impossibility of the real thing ;). You're lens that constantly changes the beams point of convergence does interest me though. I was just thinking there might be a way to 'brighten' (not intensify) the light at that point. Wouldn't it be plausable to project a small weak stream of 'fog' or smoke out of the handle. If channeled accurately in the direction of the beam, the beam would most certainly be more visible along the convergence 'strip'. It's brightness would also drop off much more dramatically once the maxmimum point of convergence was surpassed, not only due to the spreading out of the beam, but also due to the diminishing concentration of smoke (double the drop off). The projected particles ('fog') could probably be calibrated to a specific rate to give maximum/minimum discernable permutation into the airspace.
Of course you'd run into trouble if the beam were to be moved quickly, or the opposite, held in a still room in which the fog could build up in. Idealy, outside with a constant airflow replenishing clear air, and with a high pressure 'fog' flow (ensuring fog reaches maximum point of convergence).
I know this seems a bit over the top, but theoretically, i dont see why it wouldnt work..
Of course it would hav the additional inconvenience of having to 'refuel' it :D.
Maybe a water mist would work.. Say from a spray bottle. It would have the added benefit of the water settling soon after being sprayed, so no buildup would occur..

Thoughts? Im purely talking bout getting the required effect in a dark room, not really practicality..
 
There you go, get a Spray bottle or fog maker and a Laser, Done. Use the Force wisely Young Tadpole
 
Well there is a device that can create solid touching air by ultra sound? Does that make sense? That could keep the fog in an invisible container maintained by high frequency sound waves. This needs confirmation:)
 
Were can i order a three-phase 230V battery with 40 amps of output ???

What if the plastic, expanding "beam" was made of metal with little holes in in to allow plasma to sip through? It would be closest to performing like a lightsaber. In a lightsaber fight, lasers would just go right through each other without interaction, but if it was made of metal with hot plasma it would give out not only light, but cutting power and a physical resistance.
