What if the plastic, expanding "beam" was made of metal with little holes in in to allow plasma to sip through? It would be closest to performing like a lightsaber. In a lightsaber fight, lasers would just go right through each other without interaction, but if it was made of metal with hot plasma it would give out not only light, but cutting power and a physical resistance.
