I would like to buy an argon laser






The next time bigger amounts of $$$ is avaible Ill definitely buy an argon!
The only Problem ATM is that I live in europe and shipping them from USA to my place would be more expensive than the laser itself..
BTW How much would be shipping to Austria/Europe, Daguin?

I feel your pain. Both Diachi and Robjdixon are working through this. The main problem is, of course, the weight. If I can get (I don't have one now) one of the smaller PSU's (that will fit in a flat rate box) you are looking at around $150 shipping. If I have to ship a standard PSU, you are looking at closer to $200. These prices are for priority (6-10 days). If we ship parcel, it is less expensive, but there is no tracking, no estimate for a delivery time, and no real insurance protection because of limits in international shipments.

$500 is still not a bad price for one of these, just not what I can do for people in the states.

How bright are those 2 you have?

The outputs are listed above. However, 488nm is pretty well centered in our eyes ability to perceive color. It is on the green/blue border. It is like green lasers in that it doesn't take much to be "seen" as bright.

Most Argon power supplies allow for an idle mode. It helps to switch the laser to idle if you no longer need to use high power, but will want to use it again later (in between shows for example, if you're using an argon in a laser projector). Rather than turn the whole system off and let it cool down, idle keeps the tube warm and ready to go.

That's right, when you turn an argon off and back on after cooling, it goes through a lot of strain due to temperature changes. The cathode filament also get's bits "blown" of it's surface every time you start the tube. However it gets to the point where shutting the whole system down and restarting it is better than simply leaving it idle. :D

If you're interested in argon lasers you should have a read around the Argon ion section of Sams Laser FAQ. It's full of information! :)
 
What do you mean? do you keep it on?

You can keep it on for hours (days - weeks - LOL). You just need to vent the warm air somewhere.

It doesn't hurt the laser, but the room can get pretty warm.


Dave, do you have any tubes spare? or heads?

I've got a couple of Spectra-Physics 163A-1209 heads here that I have not yet matched to a PSU. You can have one for $75 plus shipping.

Dave, I'm looking for one to fit a JDS Uniphase (2114B-40MLA) are tubes generally interchangeable from one model to the next?

**EDIT** Ooops! Sorry. I read 2214 instead of 2114. You have a PSU NOT a laser. These Spectra Physics lasers will NOT hook up to your PSU.

Either of the lasers I outlined above would hook up to your PSU. I am usually willing to sell the components separately. Working on these is part of my "hobby" here. You can have the 2214-20SL for $100 or the 2214-12SL for $75. Both of those prices are plus shipping.

So do you already have this laser? Did it not come with a PSU? Do you know whether it lases or not? PSU's for your laser are fairly common (although still kind of pricey). I can easily get you to a link to where you can buy one but if the laser doesn't work, you may be throwing good money after bad?

I've got the laser head and the PSU, the head is actually multi line with few lines showing so I'm guessing I'll need a ML head not SL?

I'm still a newbie, so correct me if i'm wrong
