Help Me Build My Next Laser!

If you want a 635nm Single Mode diode(the kind DTR used to sell), you will have to get it from China. If you do that I would recommend a prettier host than the C6 since it is a somewhat special diode. The Aurora SH032 is a great host, and looks lovely. Little tricky to put together, but not if you read jayrob's thread on it. Another option would be one of Jayrob's leadlight kits....maybe not for a first build though.

I don't know, if I was building my first laser, I would go for the 650 because the diode is cheaper so if it dies you don't feel as bad. And you will kill diodes....if not diodes then something. Drivers, hosts, hell I cut a host's pill in half the other day to get my driver out to fix it. I shouldn't have pressed it so well lol.

*cough* 638 *cough* Although 638/635nm is a much nicer/brighter colour. But this is your firs build (apart from soldering wires to a module ;)) and if you stuff up, then that will be 40 dollars gone as apposed to 20 dollars. It's up to you in the end, in my opinion i like 638nm better :)

EDIT: You beat me to it wannaburn ;) As for a nicer host, how about one from DTR? https://sites.google.com/site/dtrlpf/home/host-kits-heatsinks/sky-ray-sr5-host-kit Although the sh032 is a very lovley host. If you want a sink for the sh032, you should PM Eud

Yeah, but if you run it with a low current you should be able to get a lower wavelength than 638nm. The datasheet for the diode states a min of 632 a typical of 638 and a max of 644.

Course if you really want a lower wavelength then grab an HeNe.

Tough decision, I would rather the 638nm but I really don't want to kill it :(

Is there a nicer looking host in a JAD kit somewhere? Second build; I would prefer to use a JAD kit.

Also Isaac, you've double-posed the same message :p

But what about static electricity? I've heard you can kill the diode with your finger and you won't even feel it. Similar to computer parts.

Yeah I was messaging Jay about that not too long ago, that seems like a good way to go :)

Also, any links to other 638nm diodes would be appreciated. THIS is the one I'm looking at right now, although this build will end up being over $100 if I get that diode with the Jayrob kit. Ugghh maybe I should go with the 650nm...

Yes static, the silent killer.... *dun dun dun* You can get an anti-static mat and wrist band to ground yourself from Moh (the wrist band, anyway).

Thanks for the heads up, looks like my computer glitched. Deleted one of them.

Yeah I might pick up one of those, they're pretty cheap from memory.

No worries, you got the post back by posting this anyway ;)

You get the wrist strap from cajunlasers, not mohgasm. Sorry bout that :)

Gun, you can find my handy "don't kill that diode" thread. It's chock full of tips for you.

Secondly, it sounds like you're leaning to the very diode that I offered you the other day, with the linear driver attached, and ready to for for a C-6 JAD kit...it's still there if you want it.

I just found that before, thanks SBA (What do you want me to call you? :p)

Put it in a module and I'll buy it!

You can call me SBA...You can call me scum. Whatever works for you.

If you mean a diode module, the 650nm I mentioned earlier is already in a module, with a lens, and with a Moh linear @ 478mA.

yeah the reason there's not many left I bought them a week or so ago! And this is one of them I made that does 350mW.

Honestly if you want to underpower a lpc826 the fleabay $2 aixiz adjustable drivers are awesome! Super cheap and cannot blow a regular lpc even at the highest setting.

Ok so starting from the top, the Mitsubishi 638nm diodes that DTR sells are a cool wavelength but the dot profile they make is an ugly as hell line. The 300mW 650nm diodes he sells are quite nice. They are already pressed in a module so you don't have to worry about that part and since they are open can style like LPC826s(they may even be LPC826s I'm not sure) they are protected by the module itself during shipping. Then you can hop over to Moh's site and grab his JAD kit set to 200-428mA and be done in two stops. Being from two places they would get past customs with no issues. If you do want a more exotic wavelength, then DTR also offers the 300mW 638nm Mitsubishi diodes already pressed and with a glass 3-element as well and they can take 200mA and up to ~900mA if you wanted.

EDIT: OH SNAP 1337 POSTS! UB3R L33T :P
