Help Me Build My Next Laser!

Thanks awillis but I think I'd rather do a build, if you have any lying around in the near future I might get it off you :).

Two ponies giving me some help! I think I've decided that I am going to go with the 650nm, cheaper and there is a chance that I might kill it.

How does this look:

Diode
Lense
JAD Kit

I was thinking 378mA and Black Anodized Aliminium. Do I need a Focus Adapter?

Thanks :)

The G2 lenses come with small but functional focus adapters. Since the output you desire is not of burning power you don't risk burning yourself on the beam when you try to focus it. The 660nm 3-element lenses may come with one, I am unsure if he includes them with single lenses since I always buy them in bulk. I am sure he can add one in if you ask though. The focus adapters Moh sells with his JAD kits look nice as well. I wouldn't bother with the GITD mod though since GITD things don't react to 650nm light anyway.

378mA is a nice solid current that will give your diode a very long life. I generally avoid getting a heatsink that is anodized to the same color as the host since I actually like the look of heatsinks when they stand out. Especially if you give their face a quick polish.

Actually, 378 is already borderlining on pushing the diode, I drive mine at 325mA for long life. I would say that for this diode, the best power for both power and life is around 325-350mA.

Also, this diode is very sensitive, I led'd two of them with a linear driver. I'd suggest an x-drive from lazereer; those will never led the diode.

Actually 400mA and a little above is fine. I have mine at 428mA from a Mohgasm linear and its holding perfectly(several hours of runtime in it already). I tested its efficiency curve to be at 465mA for 352mW. Even if I have a freak you will still be fine at or below 400mA. Granted 350mA will let it live a little longer but the life spans of diodes are intended for many thousands of hours so its not much of a loss. In fact my diode is in a C6 as well and doesn't noticeably warm the heatsink even after 5 minutes of runtime. I didn't get the Moh JAD though since I had my own host with a vivid red anodized heatsink :P

Oh man, ApexProxy, why do you always get the freak diodes... :D

DTR said to me that these diodes LED at around 500mA, usually. He said 400mA was already pushing it, if it is a normal diode.

Huh well 378mA is still the best option IMO since the next step lower is 200mA and that's a little sad. I couldn't really see 378mA being too much even if the diode was normal or even slightly less than normal as long as reasonable duty cycles are used.

Otherwise he may be able to ask Moh about getting a driver set to 325-350mA instead.

Who to go with?!?!

I think I'll ask Moh if he can set it at a custom 'mA' such as 325, if he can't I'll just have to go with the 378mA :)

So you think I should get the focus adapter in the JAD Kit?

The 300mW 650nm diode from DTR? Wow. Maybe I should just go with 378mA...

no i'm using the LC-826, sorry I was all confused about what diode we where talking about.

Gun, I've happily pushed mine @ 478mA with a Moh linear for some time now. I've seen no degradation at all. I even noticed it jumped up, once I powered it with two batteries! I wouldn't sweat it. The diodes are cheap anyway.

I would get a black sink and focus adapter with red GITD epoxy. That is what i would do, that is just my opinion on looks :)

Okay sweet. So do you guys think I should get the focus adapter with the JAD kit?

It is up to you. It doesn't affect its output, just its looks. I found it annoying to get my fingers in and turn the small aixiz focus ring in the c6, so thats one of the reasons I would get a focus adapter.
