@Livinloud: which seller do you trust? AFAIK this diode isn't being sold by any "reputable" companies. Unless we count O-like (which has had it's fair share of issues) or the "secret source", which I don't know anything about.

I get your point but the fact is that bare diode sellers are rarely trustworthy (DTR excluded). Either way it's not easy for them to steal the money, both feebay and ali have buyer protection and will almost certainly give your money back if you don't receive the product.

Yeah, that's O-like. A bit cheaper from their website but no buyer protection and no paypal.

I'm with you on that! Let's just contact this Aliexpress seller and we'll have the diode in a few days per EMS:beer:
 





Atomicrox, you mentioned "we know is something that company dislikes (Nichia)" as common knowledge that Nichia doesn't want their diodes in the hands of individuals. This is the first I have heard this, which is only to say I am not as knowledgeable as most, and I am not surprised by this. Is there more written about Nichia and this "policy" of restricting the distribution of their diodes? The reason I ask is because I put in a request for a professional sample of this and the new 3.5w blue diodes. Truthfully I didn't expect a response but I was very surprised when they did. Without going into great detail here, I have a small Medical Tech partnership DBA Tamudoc Enterprises and I requested the samples through my DBA with sparse details about my application. I requested they sign an NDA before I would release more about the details of my design goals, etc due to lack of patent at this point. I did mention that the end technology that would use the diode would not be for public use and would be restricted to Law Enforcement and Military only. Not only was I surprised with the fact they responded, I was surprised by the response itself. I have cut and paste the reps email below:

"Hello Jeffrey,

Thank you for your interest in Nichia laser diodes.

Typically I have to confirm the application before we are able to cooperate with customers (Nichia is not keen on supplying for defense/weapon applications). Are you able to confirm which industry it will be used without NDA?

I am gathering information from my team in Japan and determine if NDA is needed. I will get back to you as soon as possible.

From this it appears Nichia doesn't want to get involved with defense or military contracts either. Kinda nuts if you're running a tech firm not to want to work within this industry as it is probably THE industry that would make them the most profit, or at least a lot of profit. That's about as deep as the pockets get in industry, but I diverge.....

So, they don't want to sell to individuals and it also appears they don't want to sell to defense and military contractors either. That sure does cut out a huge market potential.

Just FYI, I wrote back and told this guy that an NDA was necessary to protect my interests, no Nichia's. It didn't appear he understood this concept very well. I am still waiting on a response. The first one took over a week so if it's like before maybe I will here back in a few more days. I doubt they will send me a sample but it doesn't hurt to ask. If I get one I will probably let ARG test it if we haven't collectively obtained one by then. It, however, will not be raffled off.

Just curious where this common knowledge of their restrictions comes from.

Form the supplier

this is the reason:
1.) the Nhia stoped provide this diodes to China.
2.) this is a new diodes, only provided few pieces to China previous.
3.) many suppliers have sold out their diodes, so without any in stock.(if order theirs, we still don't know when can receive it so we must wait)
4.) few suppliers have it, and increased their price higher.

Also JMiller- that is very interesting information indeed. That makes *counts on fingers* ONE company that wouldn't leap at the opportunity of government contracts haha!

TBH I don't have a "hard" source for that information. It's just something I've read often on these forums. I think it's true, if you think about it the vast majority of our 9mm Nichia diodes are pulled from projectors as opposed to bought new.

They probably do it to avoid liability issues, in any case the projector market is orders of magnitude bigger than the hobbyist market - and far less prone to news that could damage the company name (idiots shining lasers at airplanes and stuff).

I have no idea why they don't want to sell to the miliary. Would get them a lot of money for sure.

Thanks for asking. If we're getting it from another source it's better to ask if they have it in stock. Your call, waiting is fine for me if you prefer that.

Got a new seller for the diode, will update on times when they've shipped the diode to me.

One supplier claims they've tested these guys up to 3W, not sure if it's true or not but we will see ;)
 
I hope these diodes drop in prices FAST. Is it bad to wish for them at like $150/piece? Would love to see the lower powered 520s at like $25/piece :D

What did the current 9mm 445 start at in price and how long did they take to drop ??
If you can't tell if only been around since August.

But yeah, I know hte 473's dropped since 2010, 532's dropped to dirt cheap since '04 when they were $50 for a 5mW... 520's dropped a lot a few weeks after they popped up. 445's, once they popped up they stayed fairly cheap... dunno about reds or 405's, they were before my time here.

The 8X's were once $250-300+, and when the 12X Pioneer BDR-205's hit the market, that changed a bit. Still, getting that 12X drive for <$200 was a helluva deal. Just to rip out a diode.

Before that, getting 15mW was a luxury from very expensive KES-100A drives from the PS3's. I think they were around $75, maybe even $100+, but I am not certain.

Basically, we've got it good ;)

Me too. I could talk myself into getting them if they were closer to $200 each, but not now.

3W of 520nm???? I imagine that could be the brightest handheld, though I bet it's not a safe current to drive them at to triple their output rating. who knows? maybe they are super robust. we will see.

Excited for the new 9mm 445nm too. my current 9mm diode just lost a bar in the middle causing a dimmer center of the beam and much reduced power. It doesnt seem much stronger than my 1500mW rifle now. not sure if the current caused this or having it on too long. I think even with a 1 troy pound copper heat sink 5 min duty cycle is not a good idea. I'm thinking there's a point where a bigger heat sink doesnt help any more:(
 
Aw no not the dominator. I start feeling wrong after about a minute with any size laser, at any power.
 
Yes, sadly, the dominator. maybe it's punishing me for even thinking about putting one of those new 9mm diodes in it instead. when I do replace the diode, I'll either get one of the new ones if the price comes down, and only over drive it a tad, of turn down the current a bit if I get a current 9mm to replace it. Don't know if I ever had it on 5 min or not but no more will I go much past 1 min. If those new ones are rated at 3.5W, I'd be happy overdriving it to only 4W or maybe a bit more. Obviously the more expensive the diode, the more careful you need to be. exciting times here, all these new diodes. if these 1W 520 dont come down in price, I'll definately pick up one of those new osram 520s from DTR, I'm sure you guys saw those, pretty cool
