Free: "Wandering box of laser goods" USA only

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. Keep the same box and use a clear plastic window on the top that would allow a mailing address to be written on a piece of paper and slipped under the window. I have already started to fashion the box. I have a few brand new box flats I picked up from the PO a few months ago and took one of the large flat rate (12x12x6) boxes and used glue to fasten the bottom together good and tight. I went around the inside seams with some thick 3" wide packing tape and sealed the bottom completely off so small parts would slip through any cracks or get caught and lost in the seams and flaps of the box. It's amazing how strong a little Elmer's glue will make one of this boxes. I've also got some 1/4" foam padding I was thinking of lining the entire inside with. I've got some clear thick plastic sheets (like were used on old overhead projectors to write on) I used to construct a 5x8 inch window that's framed in with some thin cardboard. It has an opening on the side with a flap that you tuck under the edge that allows you to slide a piece of paper with the address into the window. I'm really proud of this box now, best damn box I've ever built. I think it would be totally cool for everyone to autograph the outside in a different color Sharpie. So even when I get the box back at slot 21 and it's full of pop tops and gum wrappers I will at least have a piece of original art with everyone's autograph on it. I may even deconstruct it and frame it as wall art. I'm so tired I'm just starting to sound silly now....well, maybe not to silly, need to think about it tomorrow when I've had a full 3.5hrs of sleep.

No way Livingloud, I'm not sending you some scrawny medium flat rate plain jane box. Your gonna get the best box you've ever seen. Since you seem to have a bunch of stuff you want to put in and not much desire to remove, I may leave a little extra space in it for you. You might want to PM me about any non-laser related stuff you could use so I could put some filler inside for you to keep and make your room. I've got all sorts of audio related HiFi stuff, gun accessories, reloading supplies, exotic wood pieces, bars and plates of aluminum and copper, Q-tips, and Depends diapers. Let me know, especially about the latter.

Goodnight!

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

So this is not just laser stuff??? Your mention hi-fi stuff guns and so forth. I've been into hi-fi home stereo gadgets electronics and the such for 30 years or better and could add tons of cool old odd stuff but not a lot of "laser" things . Oh well have fun wish I would have understood this better

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

I think the non laser stuff is directed mostly at me since I am stepping away from the hobby for a little bit so im not going to be removing laser items from the box, just adding my own stuff to it. Basically im getting little "profit" oh benefit is a better word, from this box so Jeff is asking what I also enjoy so he can make it worthwhile for me.

Jeff want to drop an AR 15 in the box for me or a nice pistol, your call ;) a pM coming after I eat and wake up some lol

If you'll read my post a little more carefully I think you'll see that those non-laser related items I was talking about were directed to Livingloud only. You may not understand the background story and how Livingloud plays into it. Simply put, he's backing down from the hobby and has been liquidating his laser stock. He was placed in slot number 2 (I'm #1) specifically because he had intentions of putting a bunch of laser stuff in the box, but since he's slowing down on the hobby he won't really need or want to take laser stuff out of the box like the rest of us might. I only mentioned adding non-laser related stuff for the sake of Livingloud since he will need to make space for his stuff; placing HiFi, Q-tips, and Depends in the box would be for him to remove completely and make room for his stuff. I asked that he PM me to discuss some stuff I may have that he would want or use in order for me to add to the box. Those things would be for him and removed completely and not passed on to the next person. Hope that helps. I probably should have just PM'd him about it rather than post that idea publically and muddy the water. I suppose if there were a lot of interest in my HiFi audio stuff I could include it in the box for others. HiFi stuff is peripherally related to lasers when you consider those using PJ's in conjunction with music and sound. I do have a couple of unbuilt DAC units made for HiFi audio that could be adapted for PJ use. Probably a waste of a HiFi DAC though, doubt they need these types of NOS DAC chips we use. Also, I don't want to assume that there wouldn't be interest in some of my general electronics surplus, some or all of it could be incorporated into some laser projects. I am going to see if I still have some 0.01-0.1% tolerance resistors for dummy loads. These are awesome for those wanting to build an extremely accurate dummy load as the accuracy of the conversion from voltage drop to mili-amps is directly related to the tolerance of the drop resistor you take your measurement across. I've also got some solid silver macro-crystal drawn wire used for signal transfer, high tolerance / low noise resistors of other values, boutique capacitors (Black Gate), and toroid and standard wound power transformers. Again, not directly related to lasers but all of them could be used to make some very high quality, low noise power sources and driver circuits for those building possibly a critical application laser project. I do plan to include a little bit of this more general high end boutiques electronic items in the box because I know someone will come across a Black Gate cap and know exactly why it's a jewel of a find and be tickled to pull it from the box.

In summary, the box is intended for laser related stuff which could include some more general but relevent electroninic components, etc. The talk above about HiFi and other non related items was directed to Livingloud only due to his unique situation and placement in slot #2. Q-tips and Depends were meant as humor and if you didn't get that....well, what more can I say? I don't know, maybe someone here really needs some Depends. Better that we need Depends around here than we do Huggies. I'm sure someone needing some Huggies will eventually pop up on the radar here, but so far we've been fortunate they haven't. I happen to have a surplus of Huggies too....

I wrote the post above probably at the same time you were writing yours, sorry for the expanded explaination in duplication.

I do happen to have an 80% lower somewhere....perfectly legal to ship! considered by the BATF to be no more than a paper weight in its current form.

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

I got all the jokes just wanted clarity on odd ball electronics (well Uzi's, rocket launchers and AR-15's :)) also. Thanks guys and I'm sorry to hear Livinloud has to take a hiatus from the hobby for a bit, I've read his sale thread and wanted to get some of his things but broke at the moment.

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

A label telling the shippers that there is glass inside, and to not stack this box, perhaps may help. Or it might be best to get, like, a rubbermaid container or toolbox and zip-tie and tape it shut.

I think the person organizing the parts box should have final say on who should and shouldn't participate, but I would imagine that if enough verified participants express concern about another potential participant, that the organizing person might should take that into consideration, since everybody has a stake in the box. (steaks in the box? I'm in!) Only one bad apple can spoil the entire barrel, but we can't all be cynics, now, can we?

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Small Tupperware container in the box isnt a bad idea. We could put all the glass or fragile stuff in it. I have packing peanuts and bubble wrap out the wazoo so I'll throw some in if I feel it will help people down the line or if someone needs it. I mean wrapping glass with paper towels should work too so who knows

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

I was just thinking you get a tackle box or whatever the heck these things are called

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

I was actually thinking of putting a stain glass piece of art in the box, you know like the ones found in the Sistine Chapel

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

maybe someone could put a glass house in? that might be cool ;)

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Only if it has a water Lumia in the diffuser and is lit by a 445nm.

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

or batteries for some sort of bong fueled vaporizer ?

Re: Free: "Wandering box of laser junk" USA only

Multiple re-taping of the box and shipping it around the country numerous times will break down the box and it might lose its integrity. If that happens items could get broken. I propose we should reserve the right to change out the box if its needed.

That make sense. I wouldn't expect someone try to piece together a piece of torn up cardboard for the sake of this most recent idea of signatures. I will leave it to the sender to do what's best.

Having said that, the idea of having everyone's signature who participated it very appealing to me for some reason, guess I'm a sentimental romantic. It would be fun for those involved to have more than just the stuff they took from the box so I have a proposition. I am going to place a nice piece of bonded paper about four times the size of a standard typewriter paper (17x22") folded I. The bottom of the box. Everyone who wants to leave "their mark" on it (autograph, favorite saying or quote, graffiti tag, etc) can use their favorite pen, marker, paintbrush, or whatever to write something down. Once the box returns to me, if it looks really cool and enough participate, I will make color copies of it like a poster and send them to everyone at my expense. I will title it and do a little artwork on it to kick it off so it will have some visual and artistic appeal. It won't take up any space to mention either and it won't matter if the box gets changed out multiple times.

There will also be a separate little booklet inside for you to mark off what you took and add what you added to the box. My hopes is that people will use this faithfully so appropriate "thank you's" and kudos can be given to each other for their participation. It's not mandatory for those who wish to remain anonymous.

Cheers,
Jmillerdoc

Maybe some fuel for a bong would be better

I always wondered about your screen name, now it's becoming a little more clear :)

No, I figured it out when you told me about the fireworks stuff.

Though I am personally not one to partaker in this sort of fuel I suppose if your in Colorado and want to hand deliver the box to the next person and they reside in CO or one of the other states who recently legalized bong fuel, you could consider it. I could also understand why some may even think this is laser related. Probably best to leave that one for another box effort in the end since some may be offended and Uncle Sam still has the final say on this issue. Being a medical doctor I must admit I have come 180 on the medical uses of this type of fuel over the past few years. Especially since my hero (not) Sanjay Gupta now endorses it. I did have a patient recently who had a seizure d/o that was uncontrolled for years until he started this therapy. Now he is seizure free for a few years and back to driving. I'm not sure what's worse though, driving with an active seizure disorder or driving while impaired, either way he breaks the law driving to work. Don't remember what work he does but I am glad I'm not his boss. But at least he has a job that someone finds useful.
