AixiZ 445nm lens...

That's something, anyway. At least the real lenses actually exist.

In your initial tests could you make any comparisons about beam/dot quality between the old 405nm lens and the new ones?

I just posted this opinion in my lens comparison thread, but I think it's worthy to repeat here...

IMHO, I think it's the same as the AixiZ 405 lens configuration. Only it's in a full length threaded metal nut...

When they made that statement, it is my guess that their lens coating company told them it would produce about 15% more power with 445 vs the normal AixiZ glass lenses for red... This makes sense. And this is about what it does produce!

I'm not disappointed at all. Because I knew it would no way be 15% better than what I tested with AixiZ 405. See here where I posted this opinion:

This is somewhat disappointing.

If the lens assemble is the same as 405, why was it outputting LESS???

I mean, if its coated better than 405 for 445nm, shouldn't it be outputting slightly (5mw??) more than the 405 lens ??

5mW is nothing at 640mA's...

It could just be a difference in the temperature of the heatsink...

It's basically the same. And I knew it would be. It could not be 15% better than AixiZ 405. Read what I wrote days ago right here:

Because it is indeed about 15% better with 445 vs AixiZ glass for red... But somebody must have thought they said it will be 15% better than AixiZ 405... Not possible with a 3 element configuration that 'clips' the wings... (IMO)



Jay, take a look at the other side of the lens. Does that also reflect yellow? For me it the other side reflects purple and the side your photographed reflects yellow. The picture doesn't show it well, but you can see on the other side it reflects purple (look at the lower right corner of the lens in the second pic).

Is it safe to use my lens which is partially coated for red until my replacement lens from AixiZ comes, or will the possible reflections be too risky?

I think you and Ken misundestood me. Chuck wants email concerning replacement for the correct lens. He is going to make sure everybody gets what they ordered. He is sorry that many of the wrong ones got sent out by mistake. He only got a partial shipment in so far but expects the balance very soon. If I understand him correctly there may not be any of the 'old' 405s coming in. The explaination of why and how this all happened is lengthy and is not important ATM. He appeared totally sincere to me and I left our meeting with very positive feelings(and half my order of FT AR Metal Body 445nm GLass lenses) I am sure in due time we all will be happy and this will be history. The oldest orders for these from me will be mailed out in the morning, the others asap.

BTW if you opened a laser 'shop' and tried to hire 'laser experts/techs' to work there(if you could afford to pay such help) how many qualified applicants do you think you would get????

About half his staff are his family who were with him on the family vacation.

OK let's see what happens, I just got notified that a second order just shipped to me today.

I wonder what lens I'm getting this time around? We shall see, I'm optimistic; hopefully I won't have to return 2 orders now.

Reading through the threads it does look like Chuck was back in town when the 1st order got shipped out, so I'm not sure how any hired help affected what was sent to me. As for getting qualified help, the answer to that question is very simple, you simply close the shop down during your vacation time; numerous mom & pop shops do this all the time.

So just like I didn't ask "permission" to order them, nor did I ask "permission" to contact them. I might point out also my email went to their generic addy, so I have NO idea if Chuck himself has even seen it. I do understand they are flooded with emails, I certainly can appreciate that, I didn't flood them with emails, they have a simple email from me on this. To which I'm patiently waiting on the reply so that my order can be corrected.

Anyway moving forward here, my point was IF I don't contact them like I was be "told" not to, then how would they even know that what I received was not correct?
 
I think i'll hold off for a month or so and let Aixiz catch up on their orders
and get organized so i know for sure i will be getting what i ordered, i
sure dont need another lens coated for red

No, this in not from AixiZ. This is my opinion of what happened...

And like I said. There is no way that a 3 element lens configuration that clips the wings will be the same as my 405-G-1 single element aspheric.

So it had to just be that the lens coating company said something like...

'Yes, this coating will be 15% better for this new 445 diode." (vs AixiZ glass for red)

That makes sense... You see, the diode is new to them. This is information that we at LPF already knew! (AixiZ 405 is 15% better than normal AixiZ glass with 445)

Anyway, that's my take on it...

P.S. Spyderfire, if you don't want the lenses I sent you today. I will buy them back from you! (new and unopened)

So if the 445 coated lens performs the same as the 405 coated lens...

Could it be that the coatings are essentially the same ?
 
This is obviously a question for AixiZ...

But it would be reasonable to think that there is a range of wavelength that most AR coatings can be used for.

I know that the range for the AR coating on my 405-G-1 lenses, is 400nm to 600nm...

And the range for the AR coating on my 650-G-1 lenses, is 600nm to 1050nm.

So it's not like the (old) AixiZ 405 lens was coated for 405nm only. There is a range that is acceptable for it, just like all of the other AR coatings…

I guess maybe because people really believed that there was going to be a 15% increase over AixiZ 405. Hmmm... That just didn't seem possible. (I knew it would not be)

I'm just glad to get what I originally ordered... AixiZ UV lenses with a full length threaded metal nut! :)

This is a WIN!

You will not find a better solution for this diode for an easy and cheap 'off the shelf' lens...

The 405-G-1 is the most power, but the AixiZ UV lens (that’s a better name) gives a nicer looking dot with this multimode diode…

Well normally AR coatings are applied for a specific wavelength but they do cover other wavelengths, although not as well. For example broadband coatings are usually for 550nm since 550 is in the middle of the visible range (400 - 700).

Anyone have the graphs for the coatings used in the different lens here ?
I'm talking about the reflection vs wavelength ones.
 
I have not tested this new shipment of lenses with blu-ray...

But I'll bet it is the same for blu-ray as the old AixiZ 405 lens... I'm so sure of it, I won't even test it!

Yup no need lol. Anyway, AR coatings have little impact...Normally, glass without coatings is like 4% reflective if I remember right. AR coatings drop that down to like 1%.

The good thing about the multi-element design is that it should give a clean dot compared to the single piece lens.
 
People keep saying that multi-element lenses give a more roundish dot, but mine is clearly a rectangle at anything > 5 feet. Although it's sort of cool since when focused, it becomes a VERY skinny line.

The diode is "multimode" (there are different kinds of multimode).
The rectangular or bar shaped output is characteristic of multimode laser diodes.

The multi-element lens does make for better divergence and a shorter "line" at a distance compared to a single element aspheric.
