8x BR DIODES

I have your first LG here! :yh:
I'll make you an 8x lazor this week....

What about the two "test" S03's? Did you find them? Did customs molest the package? Did the "freak" S03 make it through?

I think you have too many threads going ;)

Peace,
dave

Yes, i have too many threads going at once... :D
I'm multitasking!

So, i DID find the other "S03" diode.. This one i can cycle to death, correct?

There were two aluminum balls inside! I only found the first one, which was hiding a square cube, what is that?

The other ball was deeper which is why i didn't see it at first - it got stuck.

But i found it a little later! :yh:

oh, you now have a correction lens to examine? I really am curious what you think of it!
it makes the beam rounder, and sits right at the diode, before the collimator, if I'm not all off?

OK I'm still a little confused. There should have been this module with the one diode pressed, the second diode in the foil ball, and the correction lens from right in front of the diode in the sled (like the "ice cube" in the 6X).

There should have been a second module with the diode pressed in it alone. That is the "freak" S03 that I did my initial testing with.

Lastly the LG BH08 was in its heat sink, in a black baggie, (and plastic container).

Total four diodes (two modules) and a square lens (beam corrector?)

Did you get everything?

Peace,
dave

I have three diodes here? :undecided:

Customs declaration says "Gift $1 USD 3x"....

Only one AixiZ module, yes?

Are you sure you sent four?

The customs declaration says THREE...

Hmmmmmmm! I know that I wrote three because there were only three "units" in the envelope.

If I didn't send the freak to you in that envelope . . . . . . .:undecided:

WAIT A MINUTE!!!!

Maybe I sent the "freak" with Glenn. My "dim" recollection from our earlier conversation just pulled up a response from you that said

"If (I) send this package priority, it would probably get there before the freak diode arrived." (paraphrased)

I'll try to find that part of our conversation, unless you now remember it

Maybe the "freak" hasn't arrived yet!

I'm goin' lookin'

Peace,
dave

LG 8x at 280mA getting 364mW with a 405-G-1

I was one of the first to test and build with the 8x BR diodes. I reported then that I had 2 pointers going over 400 mW. These two pointers now, using Jay's g1 lens have dropped to around 300 mW. They have been run with short duty cycles.
At first, they displayed the rectangular side spill we discussed but now show a different output shown below unfocused to show the present output.
Still a burner but the meters show power quickly dropping from 400+ to about 300 mW.

sounds like a problem with the driver/battery or with heat-builtup, I would guess?
if it still reaches 400mw at the start, it cant be a dead/dying diode, not?
the picture looks like mode-hopping? perhaps the diode/facet is partly damaged but still working, and with a little increased temperature it changes mode and loses output? ..not that you could do much about it, in that case.. thanks for posting!

If it starts at 400mW+ and then drops around 300mW it must be mode-"hopping", or rather slipping into a kink!

A kink that was not present in that place, when the diode was still fresh!

Question is, is this kink above or below it's current power setting?
If above, setting it a little lower, could prevent it from slipping into it. If below, setting it higher would prevent the same thing, but setting any diode above a kink is not healthy!

Re-plotting the diode would probably create a whole new graph with a massive kink somewhere between 300-400mW.

I'm guessing this is how they degrade? This also gives me new ideas as to how to test the 8x's during cycling.... I guess i'll have to replot them every so often, to see how the graph changes!

But it's scary, and confirms my fears - we are setting them too high. :undecided:

EDIT: It really DOES look like the TEM issues PHRs were displaying, when in a kink, doesn't it? The main part of the beam shifts slightly to one side, and a smaller part separates and shifts to the other side. It then takes A LOT more current, in order to fill out the beam again, and make it seem normal, but then the diode dies very soon...

However, setting it BELOW a kink could make it's power HIGHER, than INSIDE a kink! If i understood everything correctly, the diode still starts out normal, warms up and then this happens.. That was a common occurance with many PHRs set close to a kink!

If this diode was set 10mA below where the kink starts, the power could perhaps be 350mW and stable.... Well, depending on WHERE the kink starts of course....

In any case, itw3ak is sending me a free 8x with "fractures" in the beam!
I'm gonna show him this photo to see if this is what he meant!

If it's the same thing, then it will allow me to determine where the problems start for 8x's BEFORE i even start killing them! :yh:

Hemlock_Mike;

In the chart at the beginning of this thread,
it showed you operating at ~ 350ma.

Is this the current you were operating at ?

Have you checked the current since the power drop ?

Thanks;
