470nm diode






I know I can get these particular 3.8mm 450nm raw diodes for around $60 each in quantity.

Thanks for the quck test. I'd be in for at least one @ $60. It would be nice to have a nice cheap SM blue laser that's below 50mW.
 
I'd need to order 10 minimum to get that price though. They're PLT4NSB's so rated for 50mW
 
i'm sure rayfoss can order A LOT more than I can... so therefor gets better pricing... which is why I haven't really advertised them.

Strange osram's datasheet says 50mW and rayfoss claims 55mW.. Osram also says the typical operating current is 80mA not 90.

Apparently the Opnext has a better beam profile than the OSRAM. So Rayfoss shows the Opnext datasheet, for some reason, even though they're really selling the OSRAM.

I have a particular affinity for the OSRAM, because it's what was inside that ShowWx I tore apart way back when, and it (by dumb diffraction math) was 457nm. I'm hoping that wasn't just a fluke, but I still haven't tested out my new ones. I've got the O-Like and the Rayfoss single modes here, and it's pretty much impossible to tell if they're both the same diode or not.
 
oh that's sad.. well I hope Ablaze can get his money back or a real 470nm laser :) :beer: qumefox - it's great that you tested it out :)

Incidently, my suppiler said he uses a to18 diode.. whatever that is, and that if I order 100 raw diodes I can get them for $66 each.. so not exactly the best deal.

I'm really not very surprised by the reading either, and I have no idea if I'm going to return it.
 
TO18 package is a normal 5.6mm diode.

What can you get for $66? The 450 TO18 or 3.8mm?
 
The "to18 sealed diode" without a module or any driver attached.

So to18 is a description of the form factor?
 
TO-18 is the package identification.... like TO-3 or C-Mount refers
to the package that the semiconductor die is attached to or
encapsulated in.

I've never heard of a TO18 single mode 445.

Is this just an under driven 445 multi mode?
 
If you overdrive the diode maybe it will hit the 470nm. At maximum current of 130mA it could have 460nm wavelength. We need a current/wavelength chart and murder one diode.

Most 445s don't work like AlGaInPs - I don't think you can really kick the wavelength up by over driving them.
 
The laser you sent me Ablaze most definitely has a TO-38 diode in it. NOT a TO-18. I didn't do a full teardown on it since it doesn't belong to me. However.. it's not hard to tell by unscrewing the lens and looking at the visible part of the can/diode window. it's much smaller than a TO-18.. If your supplier is selling TO-18 445's, they're likely the same 5.6mm diodes we already have.


Also Ablaze, PM me if you had any alternative arrangements for the module you sent me now that it's been determined to be a 450. Otherwise i'll get it in the mail to you monday. Probably won't make it today unless your REALLY quick a reply since the post office closes in half an hour.

Actually, all diodes should demonstrate this behavior, since it's a function of the cavity size increasing as the temperature goes up.. It just might not be as prevalent in low power diodes due to their inability to handle as much current, and therefor generate as much heat.

This is also true for reds.. I imagine if people start measuring these 300mW 635nm diodes when overdriven to 600-700mW.. They'd find they're considerably higher than 635.. Wouldn't surprise me if they weren't up in the 640's. Granted it's still better than overdriven 660s, which can end up over 670.
