Sorry, what one ?

If your lens have an AR coating that looks blue/violet, don't use it for blue diodes .... that coating is for red/IR band, and used with blue light, it just cause more loss .....






..... it's called "diaphragm", in photography :na: ..... sorry, no offense, just can't resist :p :D

Also, i'm second suggesting you to paint the inside with matte black ..... both the "high temp BBQ" suggested from Dave, or the high temp motor paint can be ok .....


I tested Will's AR coated acrylic with red, and it is about 5% better than AixiZ acrylic. (back opened)

It is the same size optic. Just like the AR coated acrylic from Virtual Village. But the Virtual Village gives 10% better than AixiZ for red...


About my 'small aperture sleeve' for the 405-G-1. No photography tricks. It does clean up the splash quite a bit. As Dave will verify since I am sending him one today...

However, after further testing and comparisons at night. I still like the AixiZ 405 glass lens better for this diode...

The new 'small aperture sleeve' will be nice for blu-ray though! :)

I'm sorry, i had to explain that part better, my bad.

I was not saying that the result is due to any photographic trick, i was saying only that the "small aperture" in the sleeve, in photography, is called "diaphragm" (a diaphragm inside the objectives is used for reduce the light flow, increase the field depth and also take away lateral scattering, especially in small cameras fixed objectives) ..... like in this lens set

..... it's an old joke between photographers, here, to refer almost anything to photographic materials ..... i'm sorry if i gave you the impression to say that the result was a photograpic trick, it was not my intention.

It actually really does do quite will for a blu-ray. And much better for the 445 too. But I must be honest and say that I still like the AixiZ 405 better for the 445...

As much as I would like to sell my 405-G-1's, I must still admit that I like the AixiZ 405 glass lens better for the 445 diodes. I can get a shorter 'line' at distance. Meaning it looks much better and more like a dot.

I think the dot with 2,5cm in diameter is too large for 10 metres. Isn't it?

Hm... I still can't understand... 2.5cm at 10 meters - is it minimum size? Is it possible to focus the light from 445nm diode into smaller dot than 2.5 cm (like with 405nm or 650nm diodes)?

Those are the minimum size and shape for those lenses. This is part of the experiment. The output of the diode is NOT round. It is a line. We are researching how to make the beam/spot smaller and rounder.

As the distance from the aperture increases, the minimum diameter of the focal point increases.
This means that the beam waist can be focused to a tiny pin-point dot up close, but further out, it will not be possible to focus it to the same diameter with the same optics. The same thing is true for any laser.

Does that make sense?

I haven't my 445nm diode yet but I've been inspired to try out your lens "diaphragm." I set up some tools and made my own (of brass) and tried it out on my 12X. It does reduce a lot of the beam artifacts and I was impressed with the results. I lose only about 4.3%.
I don't have an Aixiz 405nm lens to compare to, but I think that this small aperture hi-power lens will be the one I will use.

I've ordered a few lenses to play with so hopefully I will have some decent results with those when they arrive...

But then again, the normal side splash doesn't bother me with blu-ray.

However, the 445 is a different story. It does bother me at distance. Being able to see the line. You will see that the AixiZ 405 lens will look more like a dot at 40 feet. (it's still a line, but a shorter one)

I agree that the Aixiz lenses do give a nice round dot in comparison. When I still had a few I was using them with PHRs and SF-AW diodes. One thing that I dislike about them besides the power loss is that they stick out so far from the module. It becomes problematic when trying to make a focus adapter.

I found some small cylinder lenses I would like to try out. I will report back here with results... They are small enough to fit in the cavity for the lens in the aixiz modules so they can be placed just after the diode. If they correct the fast axis enough and don't reduce the power too much, it could be a good way to make a nice spot and maintain the ability to focus.

Edit: Tracking says my diode is "out for delivery." I should have it this afternoon.

I think here, LarryDFW is right ..... also with the same coating, the triplet have 3 lenses, not just one, so some of the loss is probably simply due to the more lenses to pass ..... ah, well .....

I have lenses I got from an ASian manufacturer, that could be the same as the AxiZ acrylic, but mine is coated.
Yes, bluish coating, but even a red coating is better for 445nm than No coating.
See my post in this thread about coatings, and using the wrong one for blue- still OK, and not much loss.

RE: 3 lenses, yes, you are right!
The ~ 15% loss mkaes sense, 3X 5% = that loss (3 lens vs a single lens with only 2 surfaces not 6- the % loss for coatings, is per surface remember) , but it does not account for the difference jayrob shows between the AixiZ glass and AixiZ 405 glass (both 3 lens systems). Jayrob stated that the difference is the "405nm " coating. What I was saying is that it can't be all coating since both have 6 surfaces. Difference between a red coating used for a blue diode is still only about 5% (se post and coating graphs).

Black coating is an excellent idea!

I do have an answer for the EzFocus with pretty much any lens in my latest 18650 '445 build' recommendation shown here:

It's basically drilling out the pill to mount the driver inside just like with the Pocket Mini builds...

This gives more room in the head. And I can even have the heatsink a little longer.

By having more room in the head, you can position the module farther into the heatsink with the set screw.

That gives you the adjustment needed to get the EzFocus adapter sitting right where you like it best! :)
