I have a high powered one going in my ray gun, and a lowered power one going in my visual effects projector. I dont really have a need for a 1 watt pointer. It would be cool, but with all the precautions not much fun.

Hmm thanks for the tips. I don't think I can do all of those (namely remote shutoff and aperture shutter), but I still plan to make mine safer than a normal click-on laser pointer. Instead of a 3 second delay, would a low power-transitioning to full power sorta thing work just as well? Seems to me a full off to on in 3 seconds would be more misleading to someone handling it.

Well, the power indicator is for informing the operator if the laser is operational, not whether there's a beam coming out the end. It may be hard or dangerous to see the beam/dot or--as has happened to me before--the shutter might even be closed. Also, some lasers simply don't have safe "low power" thresholds, or they're very hard to achieve. I believe the 445nm laser diodes, for example, put out about 200mW at the lasing threshold.

You can implement a power delay circuit much like this. Some people just don't like having the power-on delay at all though. I like them though, and will probably add them to future builds since I'm quite wary of accidental power-ons, for example when inserting the battery and the key-cap makes a momentary connection.

Until you sell it to a newbie that looks down the aperture because the laser does not turn on as soon as you press the button :D

I'll be implementing most of the features with a microcontroller, possibly including the boost driver, I haven't decided on that yet, so a delay is no problem. I'm planning on putting a battery indicator and a few selectable power outputs as well, since it seems that that's something that none of these lasers has yet.

Will there be a delay in the shipment of batches? I am only asking because I expressed interest early, paid early, and yet I was thrown in the last batch which hasnt even filled yet.

Just curious.

everything is fine i some how had your name under the arrays section of ordering and when i was double checking things i noticed it.
all batches are filled but i left some wiggle room in batch three in case something goes wrong.
the arrays are all being ordered at once so it does not matter if your in 1 or 3 if andy con fails to pay by 3pm thursday i will go on without him.

They do much less around the threshold actually. You can get ~30mW. Using a metal aperture for a rounder, cleaner beam might cut a little bit more power as well. Its even single mode below 50mW.
30mW reflected off polished metal will still be a hazard yes but not like 200mW.

Gee I hope Andy shows up. I'll likely even be able to pay before he pops up. Would be a shame to lose those 2 arrays of his.

@rev0 Which microcontroller? I've wanted to do a battery level indicator & variable power ever since I first landed here. One of these days perhaps I will actually put the time aside to do it!

I re-read over the thread, and maybe I just missed where it states it, but these are definately the A-140 projector light engines you are getting right? I ask because it seems to be a half-watt or more of output capability and a substantial efficiency difference between the two. This is after looking at current/output graphs showing both A-140 and A-130 diodes. Likely, the lower sales volume a-140 rated for 2,500lumens gets the premium binned diodes, and the 2,000 lumen a-130 uses standard bin diodes.

I just want to confirm these are for the A-140 and not the A-130, because otherwise I would rather just buy a whole A-140 projector for $850, and somebody else is welcome to have the all read paid in full array I bought shipped to them at a reduced cost, like $525. Since my goal is to combine 8 diodes for higher output, it would be very foolish not to start from the best diodes available. For folks making <1watt lasers, it doesn't seem it would matter.

It's unclear if they're a140 or a130. I thought I read somewhere in this thread (although I can't find the post now) that they are a130. kiyoukan, if can get the a140 arrays for the same price you should order them instead of the a130.

Its only $550 an array, and $35 a diode. I wouldn't expect 140 arrays for that price. But thats just me.

According to electron they're the same price, although the price electron was quoted was much higher than kiyoukan is getting them for.

If you look at post # 174 you'll see they're are the A130 Array, I made a post # 290 with the Casio part #'s for both the A130 & A140, MSRP they are the same, BUT I doubt at wholesale level they are; but then again I don't know that for sure.

I thought it would have been worth exploring since they haven't been ordered yet, and at the time of my posting I thought the price info could still be gotten before the order was placed, However there was never a reply back to it.

@ kiyoukan I had no idea you had trouble finding the Casio part # for the Laser Array, wish I knew, I could have helped you with that; finding those numbers is easy as pie.

I have the full parts manuals for them, and it's a well known national parts center I have purchased from many times over.

I was wondering what Array you were actually going to get, not sure if at the wholesale level there is any price difference; but at MSRP there is not, wholesale can be very different though. So if the XJ-A130 & XJ-A140 Array's cost the same, might be worth it to get the XJ-A140 for some binned? Laser Diodes.

While not conclusive yet, I've been following some of the tests and reading on PL, etc and I thought that Lasers from the XJ-A140 Array put out more power.

As others have said I doubt they made a different diode for it, but the Laser Array part numbers are different.

I haven't been following this thread everyday but I just read you are going with the XJ-A130 Array, I'm sure no matter which one you get, everyone will be happy with them.
