***EDIT*** Smeerworst has tested the laser with his Ophir LPM and the laser hits the 3 Watt mark !!!
Here is another videolink. ***EDIT***

First I want to thank Eudamonium for making the heatsink and the focus adapter. They are really beautiful made. :thanks:
And to DTR for providing me the 9mm diode.

This is my first BIG build. I was at cnqualitygoods.com for the blue silicon tailcaps when I saw this wonderful host. This host has room for triple 18650 batteries. I bought the host and ask Eud for making the custom sink and focus adapter. When the parts are arrived I started the build.

The original host.

Reflector replace by the enormous sink.

Custom made focus adapter.
CQG-5.jpg

The whole host is basically a sink. Reminds me of the Sandworm in Dune.

GITD tailcap.

Battery holder for 3X 18650 in parallel.
CQG-11.jpg

The middle piece can also be unscrewed. I didn't know that till later :)
CQG-12.jpg

The workmanship is perfect !
CQG-13.jpg

Next to the tiny C6 sink.
CQG-14.jpg

I polish the copper module for the extra shine :)
CQG-15.jpg

9mm 445nm diode press in the module.
CQG-16.jpg

I use the original lens from the 9mm diode. The lens barrel was sanded to get the lens closer to the diode.

The driver version 1

I used dual Ben Boost for the build. The main ic is heatsinked with copper plate.

The battery side of the pill.
CQG-19.jpg

Triple Sanyo 18650 in the holder.

2.26A :eg:
CQG-21.jpg

The horror
I couldn't get the dual Ben Boost driver stable. After 8-15 sec the power drop dramatically. Somehow the drivers can't maintain the high current.

I can't figured it out what is wrong. Maybe the silicone wires are too thin or the inductors are too close. I don't know. :undecided:
I decided to ditch the drivers and rebuild the power suply from scratch.

The driver version 2

This is a buck driver. I have been using this driver in many build. The main ic is heatsinked with a piece of aluminium. This piece it touching the pill from above.
CQG-22.jpg

The battery holder has been rebuild to fit 3x 18650 in SERIES.
I had to figured out which line to cut and and connect the other points.
CQG-23.jpg

CQG-24.jpg

The driver fits easily in the large pill. A piece of aluminium is connecting the driver and the pill for heat transfer. I put some glue on the edge to strengthen the construction.
CQG-25.jpg

Pushing the boundaries of the 9mm diodes. The driver gives 2.222A
The laser gives 2.8+ Watt !!!
I have to reduce the beam with a blue filter and two UV filter. The multiple filters block 29% of the beam so that only 71% hits the LPM !
That number must be multiplied by 1.41 for the actual power. :eg:
CQG-26.jpg

The LPM reading must be multiplied by 1.41 !

BEAMSHOTS :

I have only a few beamshots. My ballhead on the tripod was broken so I couldn't use it for steady shots. I will add more pictures when it is repaired :)

If you made so far, kudos :D
Thanks for watching !!! :thanks:

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

Nice Big Boy. Its one of my Favorite Hosts.

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

wow, first few pictures made it look like it was small, then the last shot really gave a good comparison of the size. good build +1

awesome build! :D Weird about the benboosts though.. Sure it was not a heatsinking problem?

Anyhow what an awesome build! i am just craving for a big boy like that.. < Checking what i could sell to up my paypal >

Good luck with that bad boy

greetings,,

EDIT: must pread rep :(

The laser is build for the sale.

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

Very nice work. I have one of these hosts but I still have not had time to built it yet. I am thinking the higher forward voltage of the 9mm may have been giving the boost drivers a hard time. Anyway the buck is certainly seem to have worked out very well for you so congrats.

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

Awesome build blord :D it's an awesome host & that's lots of power nice job :)

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

Looking good. Love that sink. That battery holder is Schweet.

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

That is a whole hand full of laser ya made yourself there.
Good work.

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

awesome build! I love it.

I have to get my hands on of those hosts too! :D

I have one question though. That driver is using AX2002 which is a 2A max output buck regulator. How did you get a 2.222A out of it O.o

What resistor did you use? 0.11ohm?
Maybe DX updated the IC to the AX2003 which can handle 3A of output current.

Do you have another one you can test with say 0.1ohm resistor or 0.09ohm?

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

WOW, that's an awesome laser. I'm sure a 3W of 445 will certainly amaze everyone :gj:

Thanks for the kind words.

I can't read the ic. The top is sanded. I replaced the set resistor with R120 and 1R00 stacked up. I have use this buck driver on 1.8A without problems in many builds so 2.1/2.2A isn't far away.
It is like setting the LM317 to the max. If decent heatsinked the LM317 will go higher than 1.25A

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

Nice build man! I like it so much!
I'm pretty sure your laser is much more than 2.8Watts, may you have a >3Watt laser there

Send it on someone with Ophir LPM.

im looking into getting my hands on something handheld and powerful....noob question but this will be good for burning capabilities ? battery life? etc please and thanks

Re: 2.8 Watt BIG BOY single diode blue laser 3X18650 !!! ULTRA HEAVY PICTURES !!!

Wow what a beauty! Make 9 more and you will be able to explode the moon! Great Build.

Wow impressive power you have there and a very nice build! :gj: and +1 :)

Edit:Sorry must spread some rep first....:(
