The police in Den Bosch (Netherlands) has arrested a 14-year-old boy suspected of shining a bus driver in the eyes with a laser pen from the parental home.

The 46-year-old driver was injured in his eyes and had to stop the bus. The victim was treated in hospital. It is still unclear whether the injury is permanent.

In his bedroom officers found the boy had a laser pointer, and approximately one hundred blanks. The boy was sent home after interrogation.


The case will be forwarded to justice.

There is no mention of power or wavelength of the laser, but it seems it must be reasonably powerful if its still unclear whether the damage is permanent or not.

I'm posting this here since its the first time i heard someone being arrested for lasering ground vehicles. This was a matter of time obviously, but i'm affraid incidents like these will worsen the reputation of lasers further.

The news message doesnt state if it was an intentional act, or he was just fooling around with the laser and accidentily hit the bus driver. I'm sure he must have told the latter to the police, but we'll see if there is a trial at some point.
 





thats serious shyt :o i saw a little guy at IKEA ( delft ) shining on people from above stairs, good thing i stood behind him and told him "you better stop doing that or ill kick you of the stairs" might sound a bit harsh but bleh he had to learn :spank:

just hope they dont heighten up the control checks at the customs..
 
I hope the laser import ban crazyness won't hit our country, although it would create a market for locally build pointers...
 
Ah, i missed the other post about it, but this translation is a bit better than the automated one from google anyway.

I have no idea if it will lead to additional legislation though. There seems to be no need for that, as what this kid did is already punishable by existing law - i suppose its considered assault.

What will probably be far worse for the kid are the civil charges. It seems that the bus driver will not be able to work for some time, and that can add up to a very expensive bill.
 
Very stupid action of the kid. 14 year is just not enough to realize the consequences of his action. That is why lasers should be selling to persons at least 18 years old.
 
Not trying to be offensive, but we have here a very old proverb that say, more or less "the mother of the stupids is always pregnant" ..... no matter how much times you repeat basical rules about safety, you can always find somewhere someone that feel funny to break them, perhaps ..... :p
 
I am 15 years old but I have never pointed a laser on ones eye or face. I understand the consequences and I always wear safety goggles..

what is a laser beam???(haha) when burn stuff I where them. When I point it in my room or in the sky I don't...
 
The problem is that the bad ones always ruin things for the good ones. Goes for any age group handling lasers, but seems to apply somewhat more to youngsters.

I doubt an age ban would do much good though, as these things are often ordered online and there is noone to enforce such regulations. With alcohol and tobacco you have a shop owner to fine if he sells to minors (legal age is 16 here), but its going to be hard to fine someone in china for not verifying age.

Helas this won't work in Europe. The lawyers/judges here are not the same as in USA.
 
It seems that some kids think that breaking rules and laws makes them cool and they think that they are a bad ass, but they are actually being a dumbass!

Pointers above 1mw are illigal here anyways, according to almost everyone at photonlexicon. Stopid laws.
Or is this not true?
