Zoombie 445nm laser right out of the box

Hey everyone. So basicly i got a A140 diode recently and it seems to be a problem. Since I turned it on for the first time, the output hasnt been normal at all. The laser is well heatsinked and i´m running it at 1.5A with the micro flex drive heatsinked powered by a 18650 lipo batt.

See it for yourself

-Pretty nice heatsink from Laserlands:yh:



-V5 heatsinked with thermal glue. Driver WAS shorted like 5 times before the laser was soldered.



-lipo batt, 2800mA! It came with my waterproof 200mw red from o-like :yh:



-Wires soldered (wires from my nokia charger xD) case pin soldered to the -
I didnt even touch the pins with my fingers to prevent any spark or something.



-The all set up



-And finaly the output. So what happens is that the light is far from being neat, it has alot of stripes. There arent those comun dust holes bocking the light, the window is perfectly clean. oh and the output is VERY low. Its only about 3 times brighter than my 200mw red, and my 250mW blu-ray almost burns like this one. and its only at 200mA -.-
This is a zombie laser for sure. Dont know if it was bitten by a Walker or not..:thinking:



So, any huch will help me figer out what´s happening.

From the looks of it, there is nothing wrong with your raw diode output.
these 445nm diodes are multi-mode, so that multiple emittions (those lines you see) are perfectly normal.

It could be that your lens (the colimator) is misalined or is damaged/dirty in some way.
what lens are you using?

Do you have a meter?
messure the battery's voltage. make sure the battery isnt nearly or is on the verge of dying.

Nothing wrong at all there, dude!
Look at link n.3 in my sig to see what a healthy diode looks like at different currents.:)

if its running at 200ma its not zombified, i would make sure your flexdrive is set to 1.5A and maybe try another power source. Those batteries can be defective and are low quality in general. Try your set up on a test load, see if it tests 200ma, if it does re-set your flexdrive to 1.5A and try again!

What happened to the Pot on the driver.?:thinking: I dont see it. Does the diode project a dot on the wall or is it all deformed looking.?

I agree with GBD and anselm this is what my 140s look like when they are out of focus.

The output looks alright but I would add shrink tubing on the diode pins.;)

The beam profile looks completely normal for these diodes.

The low power could be a simple problem.
Check:


  • Power source - is the battery charged and measuring 3.7-4.2V?
  • Flexdrive - is the current range set correctly? Has the current been set with a test load?
  • Electrical contacts - are the solder joints secure? Are there any short circuits between the Flex drive components and the heat-sink?
  • Lens - is the lens coated for anti-reflection at ~445nm (and not ~650nm!)?

Also, I would recommend you keep the back of the aixiz module on and feed the wires through it. It will help to move some of the heat away from around the module threads where the diode is seated.

If you are used to seeing a 405 a 445 can look a little different.

Here is a shot of a 445 and a 405. Now this 445 is being pushed @ 1.6A and you can see the output has filled out a little more than the picture you showed. Is it possible that it is not getting the 1.5A. Did you test it with a test load?

My last 445 laser had a very neat light, there wasnt a single stripe. So i thought that this had some kind of problem.

Yes I have a meter and my batt is fully charged. btw i´m using 405/445nm lens from o-like.

Did you test the driver on a test load?

Your right, the top of the pot is missing! but i dont understand.. it keeps outputing 1.5A xD

sorry i didnt know that this was a tipical output of a 140´s diode. What about other 445nm diodes? do they have this stripes aswell? My last diode had a clean light and seemed so much powerfull.
