I love the art style of borderlands. "Graphically" there are way better games but Borderlands has a really fun art style I repeat, the replay value is insane, I've got no screen shots atm but will try to get some. Try looking at youtube videos, that's what convinced me to get the game.

I see Serious Sam is wroth something somewhere else than its' home Country ... if any parts where shortened (the core of the game ones, not side tracked tasks and missions) the plot would lose on it's weight... I always pay attention how the game's engine is optimised ... I see you haven't played Jedi Knight 3 Jedi academy. I finished that game 22 times....

No worries, Mass Effect is a top game, for sure! I just got "caught up in" the side-missions and they eventually appeared to be slightly-varied copies of around 3~4 base stories... :tired: The main plot itself was very enjoyable, almost like reading a good Arthur C. Clark novel - and being in it :D I'm very curious about the origin of the Collectors (Mass Effect 2 - please, no spoilers!!!) and I will be playing in about an hour. I still need Tali but otherwise my crew's solid! I'm going to take care of all their personal "agendas" before proceeding with the main plot ;)

Back to Mass Effect 1, here's a few memorable screens I made: Mass Effect

Btw, have you tried the Fallout series? The storyline is not as tightly knit as the Mass Effect series, but exploring the Fallout world is a whole lot of fun :) These games however are more RPGs with shooter-mechanics; a really great TPS is Dead Space Talk about scary stuff, too
... :scared:
Oh yes, I played Academy; it was loads of fun but just didn't make it to Dark Forces / Sith levels. I even liked Outcast a bit better. That said, I did rate Academy at 8. 22 times? Really? (here we go again ...lol :p)

Last but certainly not least; I agree with you that some engines are beautifully optimized and some are total crap... :cryyy: There even a few games that played so poorly on my "2nd gen" HW; So 2 generations later, I replayed the game and guess what; no freakin' improvement
a few of the older Ubisoft FPS were like that, sigh. Ubisoft China's team was one of the worst offenders... (one of the Splinter Cell games). As much as I love Ion Storm, the Deus Ex "implementation" of the Unreal engine was utterly disasterous; I had Unreal Tournament installed on the same HW and it was running almost 50% faster...

On the flip-side, Ubisoft did wonders with Far Cry 2 ;)

p.s. :beer:for Croteam!!!

EDIT:

Mass Effect also has elements of Role Playing Game, but it's primarily a shooter.?
It's actually in a (new) cross-over genre known as Action Role-playing. Diabolo III is supposed to be similar... :D

Dude Traveller I can't believe you put Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter above Deus Ex. That is just unacceptable.

I'm kidding of course. That is a good list and I agree they all are good games (I have played probably close to 80%-90% of them). I am glad to see some of the older games being posted. System Shock 2, Aliens vs Predator, and Deus Ex are all some of the best games around if you can get past the dated visuals which aren't that bad.

Lately I'm been replaying Return to Castle Wolfenstein GOTY... For an old 2 CD Game, it has some nice graphics, good music, creepy plot, and hot nazi babes in Domintrix outfits...

No one has mentioned Postal 2 - A Week in Paradise. "Ohh! Edges Weapons, someone could get hurt.."

Crysis was a GREAT game until you get to the aliens part, then it just sucked. But try this, arm yourself with a shotgun, find some chickens, pickup chickens, set suit to Strength, and throw chickens, and fire shotgun. Best Skeet simulator ever...

*** Best PC Games developers *** (imo), in no particular order are:

Valve (if you have to ask...)
Epic (if you have to ask...)
Id (if you have to ask...)
Bungee (if you have to ask...)
Infinity Ward (first MoH games as "2015/EA" and the CoD series)
Crytech (Crysis, Far Cry)
Bioware (Mass Effect, ... too many to list)
Monolith (FEAR / No One Lives Forever)
Remedy Entertainment (Max Payne)
Red Storm entertaiment (Rainbow Six)
Ubisoft (In-house, Montreal division)
Bethesda (Fallout series)
Looking Glass Studios (System Shock)
2K (Bioshock)
Ion Storm (Deus Ex)
Codemasters (Operation Flashpoint)

Last but not least, check out EDGE magazine if you're serious about the industry...

OMG, I must have been on drugs to leave out Rockstar...:yabbem:

As much as I love Ion Storm, the Deus Ex "implementation" of the Unreal engine was utterly disasterous; I had Unreal Tournament installed on the same HW and it was running almost 50% faster...

ERRATA
Deus Ex ran just fine; I meant Deus Ex: Invisible War which came out two~three years later using the UT3 engine but looking like it was still on UT1 and running like it was rendering Far Cry quality graphics. It was that bad that I never finished the game (even after a HW "2-generations-upgrade" six months later)....
... mega-un-optimized :wtf:
Dude Traveller I can't believe you put Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter above Deus Ex.

Lol, I hear ya! well making such a list is a risky prospect; first, I forgot to mention it is only for the PC platform. Think of all the great stuff from the Japanese developers (ie, Metal Gear Solid) that was/is mainly limited to the console platforms. Secondly, I really should have also made it clear that I was referring to [mainly] Single Player games. So when I rated, say, CoD 4, I was referring to the campaign and not MP.

I love multiplayer just as much as the next FPS freak but I don't have the time to invest in it. The last time I dedicated major chunks of time to MP, it was for Unreal and Quake 2... Once UT hit the streets I couldn't keep up anymore, with the average player investing 8hrs/night...

If I want "fast-paced action" now a days, I don't reach for Team Fortress but for a COD single-player campaign (lol). Compared to say, Deus Ex or Mass Effect, COD SP campaigns run at a brutal pace. Nope, my Rocket-jumping days are long over (...but not forgotten, lol. Long live Quake 2 DMs!!!)

Last but certainly not least, is piling games from different genres into the same list; I really-really-love tactical shooter, love FPS, like very much action-RPGs and story-driven, multi-path FPS, enjoy RPGs and "dabble" in the occasional RTS. So of course I will rate a very good tactical shooter higher than a brilliant RTS - this is of course purely biased. This is then, the only reason why GRAW may have scored 1pt. more than Deus Ex.

Speaking of which... Deus Ex 3 (Human Revolution) is coming... Mar 2011

p.s. really-really-love Tactical shooters ;-p

Agreed! RTCW made my top-ten list :D As for "going postal" and shooting chickens in your spare (gaming) time, well... no comment, lol ;)

Wow, whole lot of posts here since I last logged in.

Traveller, well you will find my taste in games very ackward.

I tried Fallout 3, and I have to tell you that it's annoying (at best) that the chance of you hitting the enemy depends solely on some number in your stats page, instead of your own precision with mouse and skill.

I loved GTA Vice City and San Andreas since you already mentioned Rockstar, but they failed epically with GTA4 if you ask me.

I have enjoyed every second of Far Cry- But Far Cry 2 ? Nah, fail, had apsolutely nothing to do with Far Cry. I love good paranormal story and everything.

I also like seeing my thread come alive like this :)
Very nice of you guys!

F.E.A.R. is pretty scary, try playing it in Surround sound !!! you can hear stuff coming up behind you. Scares the bejesus out of ya.

Just ordered Black Ops at the W'kend for the Wii. Will let you know how it goes :)

C.O.D 3 was alright too.

I also like the Metroid Trilogy, well 1 & 3, didn't care much for the 2nd one :)

F.E.A.R. 1 was pretty damn good. However, F.E.A.R. 2 was not exactly all that scary. It was interesting and everything but 1 was damn good.

Fair enough

RPGs are not your thing, even the more TPS-friendly versions (so you should avoid pretty much every other Bioware game aside from Mass Effect...)!

GTA4... Actually bought & installed it but just haven't gotten around to playing it... (hence, the jury's still out on that one).

Far Cry 2: agreed - absolutely and positviely nothing to do with Far Cry; When Ubisoft retained the engine and Far Cry code from Crytek, they should have changed the name. But the engine's far from being a "fail" - the quality of rendering (audio as well as graphics) is up there with the best of them! It is also as efficient (optimized) as the best of them too. I'm not sure what other games Ubisoft's made with that engine*, but should consider making it available for developers looking to outsource their game's engine(s). Epic, Id and Monolith are perfect examples of "game engine" providers.

*Addendum: Looks like few games have made use [or partial use] of Ubisoft's modded Crytek engine, called Dunia.... :-/

EDIT:

Maybe not, but it got my vote for the best freakin' laser weapons / sights :D

Mafia was good, so was Riddick (very innovative 3rd person engine), both getting an "8" from me.

All you scary-fps lovers really have to play Dead Space - it's a must!!!

smackdown!

Lol, "bad day at the office", hahahaha!!!

As for COD 4... probably one of the most immersive games I've ever played. I can't even think of one single level that I didn't freak out over... check out my screesnshots...

Traveller, about the engines, well ones runing COD4 and 6 are the best optimised game engines evar. They run smoothly even on older hardware while providing good graphics.

I have played Dead Space and while it did have it's moments, it did not impress me much I am afraid.

If the lasers would be realistically represented by their visibility, you would not need ammunition in any of your weapons since lasers appear to be like, 1kW in power each from lasers, and there are three on each weapon, more or less.

In any case, game was pretty confusing at times, usually no explanations to why do I need to go the other side of the ship and solve a puzzle. You just must. With obligation of taking the path which is most heavily loaded with monsters.

I loved the Nogravity parts though, was fun jumping around.

DJNY mentioned Max Payne 1 and 2. Combined, I finished both games like ... 30 times :D

What's your best modification in 2 ? Mine is Cinema 2.0, apsolutely best mod for Max Payne 2.

Lol, maybe you need to cut the devlopers some slack, it's just an FPS and they aren't "PL" forum moderators...:crackup::crackup:

Later

Well yeah, maybe I do. But still, didn't like the game much.

COD4 is considered to be best game of the series today, and I do love it. Multiplayer rocks too. I love COD6 singleplayer more though. F*ckton of weapons, each with new f*ckton of modifications, add it all up and there's more weapon combinations then one could list here.

Also, weapons look totally badass and appear very lifelike and give you a feeling that you're holding something that kills people and is generaly dangerous.

Unlike games like Crysis where you're holding a damn BB gun.

From lasers in Dead Space it's evident that developers never held a high power laser, but from guns in Crysis it's visible that developers never held or fired a gun.

Just my two cents though, somebody may prefer that instead of one-shot-kill style like in COD series.
