520nm diodes - new kid on the block - More powah






It's possible for yellow diode to be developed - who know which active semiconductor material will be used - Gallium Nitride or Gallium Phosphide.

(Gallium Phosphide was also used in older yellow and green LEDs - probably still used for yellow LEDs.)

Nevertheless it would be interesting in how the outcome would turn out since yellow is and was considered a no-landing zone of the diode lasers.

Yellow diodes exist, they just run at ridiculous low temperatures. Also, like has been said many times before, it is unlikely they will be developed, as there is no commercial need for them. 1W green is more realistic though, i imagined it could be used similar to the 1W 445's in ca$0 projectors.

Well, I know that some peoples would rather to see yellow GaP laser diode operating at room temperature. Oh well, it would be interesting to see the outcome but like you said it won't happen, so it will have to be swept under the carpet.

And, DTR - I cannot wait. :D
 
I am working on getting some of these and should have them in stock before too long. Do keep in mind these are not just a more powerful version of the PL520 they are a different type of diode. The PL520 is single mode diode and the PLP520 is multimode diode. But from what I hear it is not as bad of divergence as other multimode diodes that we are used to currently.:beer:

Comparing the divergence specified on the data sheet, the PL 520 looks about the same as the PLP diodes. 7x23 (PLP) compared to 7x22 (PL).
With these numbers, the fast axis diverges relatively fast, so my guess is that the profile will look like some of the Mitsubishi 638s. They have a highly elliptical beam but divergence is much closer to single mode 655s than the multimode 445s.
A G-1 lens will probably be best since it has a high NA and can collect most of the light with less distortion and "clipping."

Vf is also lower. 6.2 (PLP) compared to 7.0 (PL).
These look like really good diodes.

Not bad. I am looking forward to working with one once DTR starts selling them. Hopefully I can get even one or a few as I would expect them to sell like hot pancakes here on LPF. And reduced Vf is a welcoming change on a multimode laser diode.

I second that. I may have to sell my current 520 to get me one...
 
you guys are thinking like me. PUT OPTION on current 520nm laser's value, sell early to loose the least equity. We'll see.

Good idea. I am in favor of 100 - 250mW 520nm diode sellout soak test before the sellers go ahead and sell as normally so we would have general idea of how popular it is (of course it will, but I do want to know how it is).

jordan, you are indeed the man! i hope these work out well for you and the community. here's to hoping they are not like the mits 635 and have a nice beam:beer:
 
Jordan, you do need to test them and post the results like the original 520nm diode tests. This might be the new best thing :D MERRY EARLY CHRISTMAS!!!
 
Bet my ass these can output at least 200mW. If the beams aren't too ugly (i.e. unlike the 638nm multimodes) I'll almost surely get one!

The PLP diode divergence is 7x23. The PL520s have a pretty nice dot (as I heard) and are 7x22... :beer:
 
I can vouch this. I have PL520 50mW diode laser, and with G2 glass lense, the laser beam's squeaky clean and the divergence is decent (checked with laser goggle with laser at 10 feet from wall, and it was reported by someone here that it diverges slowly from surprising distance).

I ordered one each of these the day I got a notification from eBay...I think Techhood got the numbers backwards so I covered my bases. ;)

I love my S4 with a PL520, fantastic visibility and low divergence, can't wait to try the higher power versions.

The PL520 has a nice dot indeed but those numbers are for divergence without any lens, not sure they actually mean anything... do you know how much they affect the final divergence?
