So, it's time to reach the final decision on the current to test, so i can set the drivers and start the Double Murder Experiment...


I read several suggestions for powers, and currents.
Seems like 390-400mA is the most desired point, if i'm not mistaken..


It is a very hard decision to make with this particular diode. There are at least two if not three indicators that they are completelly different diodes from 8x's, so chances are good we will find them "reliable" at higher powers..


Now if i was asked to make a 500mW+ laser, my recommendation would be to use a 12x diode. But i may be a little too careful sometimes...
Most people would like to get 500mW out of 8x's. And if that is possible with a long enough lifetime there, 12x's might be capable of even more...


I have a feeling we are gonna see 600mW 12x lasers pretty soon, and they might even turn out to be reliable enough, just like 8x's at ~500mW seem to be so far..


But testing 600mW might be a bit too much, and 500mW sounds like too little.. The diode could end up lasting "too long" and we would not find the "sweet spot"... In this case we only have one diode, so perhaps 550mW would actually be a good power to test. We should definitelly test over 500mW with 12x's...

I think if we test 550mW and get like 50h+ or so, it would be a good indication, that 12x's are very reliable at 500mW and capable of going close to 600mW. The second 8x will also shed some more light on this, when the final conclusions are drawn...

I hope we can come to an agreement easily here, cos i don't want to bear the entire responsibility for this decision by myself... :angel:

This would be fine. We will NEVER learn all that we want from one diode. If we can get a reliable >500mW out of them MANY people will be happy. 500mW is a MAGIC barrier for many.

I also suppose this is the better way, for now, cause we just have one of them for the inquisition tribunal ..... er, mean, test chamber ..... so, yes, setting it for the current that you measure at 550mW, and keep this current for the test, can at least give some good indication .....

390-400mA sounds fine to me. I agree, 500mW is a magical barrier it seems, but it'd be even nicer to keep it above 500mW even after some degradation, and setting it initially at 550mW would help.

I vote for 420mA. We don't seem to find the critical point and in my opinion, it's better to know that 420 was unsafe than to know 400 was safe

420ma would be 162% of pulse power (about 517mw).

That is only about 8% more current
than the 8X had @ 150% of pulse power (300ma).

I thought the 8X operating for >150 hr illustrated ...
that we needed to drive slightly harder.
