You guys know of a good flashlight???

don't just go based off of lumens!!!!! you really need to see the beam yourself. all flash light have different parabalas. so they dispense the light differently. my surefire is only 80 lumens but it is way brighter than a 6d cell maglite.
 





Does anyone know what the most powerful LED is? It's p7 is it not? I need to find some other bright flashlights that use p7 LEDs.
I love my flashlight, but if I could wish for anything then it'd be that I could focus it smaller (althought the beam is already a great size to me (I don't know how small a flashlight can focus...)

What's the closest to a laser that you can focus a flashlight?

I wonder if a p7 can be modded into any of those two..
you're probably famamiliar with the LED Lenser right? It seems like a great flashlight, but I want one that is driven at 2.8A just like my flashlight. Focusing with that much power must be BRIGHT.
 
there is just sooo many of them, i still cant make up my mind evryone has a different opinion, at least with lumens im basing myself on some type of specs lol.

Might as well buy them on deal extreme, they are cheaper then anywhere else but the shipping is gonna take awhile.

I have no idea how much its drived at but you have a good 40-45min before you cant see anything.

If brightest is what you want, then you'l want one that has a p7 LED, not Q5. Look at this picture here, just a typical comparison between P7 and Q5:

And keep in mind, if you get a p7 flashlight that takes TWO 18650 batteries it will be TWICE as bright compared to one that only takes one. I'm guessing that the p7 light shown in the picture above is only running off 1 18650 battery, so you could imagine how much brighter it would be with two?

So if you want the brightest, I really suggest you get a p7 that takes two 18650's like I did:

A q5 or R2 LED flashlight has twice the throw of the typical P7. The hot spot of my Q5 flashlight looks 2 times as bright as any P7 that I own. The reason is because of the type of reflector that they use.

My Q5 is perfect for throwing the light 100 to 250 Meters or 250 to 800 feet. The P7 lights are mainly a flood light and the throw on them is less than 150 Meters.

Also....if you buy a flashlight with a good driver in it, the brightnes of one battery in comparision to two, will be the same. So really your theory of having 2 18650 batteries being twice as bright, is completely false.

What i want is a flashlight for my dad, he is a wildlife biologist i guess a flashlight that would be "weather proof" would be ideal aside from having good throw. i tried looking by myself on DX but there is just so many of them i didnt know where to start. Ive never seen any LED Maglites but the bulb ones ive seen are pretty bright, so i thought if i can go even brighter for a reasonable price i was gonna do that. But ive never seen nor compared flashlights with different lumen ratings, but i guess like chipdouglas stated the only way was to actually see it in person, because the LED itself may put out so many lumens but with a bad parabola as a reflector they are not gonna do me any good. so i guess im asking for experience on the flashlights that you guys have compared. and the ones you guys think i should buy i know they are relatively cheap, but i dont want to buy three or four to figure out which one i like

i guess now im leaning towards a q5

Q5, R2, and P7 are all bright.

P7 in general is by far the brightest (Average 700lumen), but they are primarily a flood light, with an ok amount of throw. To be honest, they have a pretty good ballance.
Over all P7 are great.
I would suggest getting this one if you decide on a P7. I wouldn't say that it's water proof, but it will easily resist rain and being submersed a couple of feet.

R2 and Q5
180 to 240lumen range
I put both of these in the same catagory. R2 leds are supposed to be a little bit brighter than the Q5, but I like the Q5 more because they have more of a pure white color to them than the R2 have. R2 can have a slight blue tint to them.

Some of the models on DX that use an R2 or a Q5 are designed for throwing the light far. You can spot some of these easily. They tend to use either a deep reflector or a recoil system.

Here are some examples.
DealExtreme: $25.51 UniqueFire HS-802 Cree R2-WC 2-Mode 230-Lumen LED Flashlight (1*18650/2*CR123A)
DealExtreme: $26.94 Ultrafire WF-008 Recoil Thrower Cree Q5-WC 230-Lumen LED Flashlight (1*18650/2*CR123A)

Both of these lights will easily out throw a P7, but you don't really get any spill or flood. THe reason on this is because the light is focused very tightly. When all of the light is focused on to one spot, this makes the hot spot of the Q5 or R2 look much brighter than a P7.

You simply can't go wrong with any of these lights.


If I was out walking in the woods, I would prefer to use my P7, because it will light up my path more with the flood.
Also, all three leds are much brighter than a Mag light.

The flashlight I recieved I consider weatherproof. Infact I've actually submerged it into the water and it was fine. The only problem is the o-ring around the glass lens should have been a little better, cause eventually (after about 2 minutes of being submerged) it let in 1 single drop of water that just stayed around the lens. Keep in mind that was only when i submerged it.
I've used it in the woods when it was raining, and it was great. It lit up the entire area I pointed the flashlight at. The p7's do throw a lot of flood, which is great for being in the woods or close areas. Also keep in mind it still does have a great beam in the middle of all the flood.
Do you think your dad will need the flashlight for close up areas, big open areas, or shining far away? If it's for shining far away then get a q5, but if it's for shining in big areas (like the woods/forest) and close up get a p7. Again, 2x18650's will be brighter than just 1 (but I was wrong about twice as bright).

It appears much brighter in real life, but the video gives you the idea of what the throw of a p7 looks like.

Q5 will have a tighter spot but less visibility around that spot.
I personally like p7 just because whatever I'm pointing at is very lit up, but I can also see everything around what I'm pointing at.

edit: I'm trying to find a Q5 video outside to show for comparison, but all the Q5 videos I've tried to watch so far you can't really see what's going on... =/
