Windows 7






I am using the x64 bit version from Microsoft's beta. Installed it in mid July. I like it very much so far. Its the only x64 version Ive left on my PC for more than a couple days.

Not the same copy then, my friend already installed 64 bit on his machine and it's blazing fast.

Mine uses 11.5GB, and that's with a bunch of updates installed since April. Do note that I am still on the RC1 version, build 7100.

Did he do a fresh install? That might be it. The problem was when I tried to upgrade from vista, it said I had x86 (I had x64) and it wouldn't let me install x64. So a clean install would probably work then. :D

I did a clean install on my x64 version, I didnt even try upgrading.

Mine windows directory is about 13 gig. I am using this version from the beta test

7100.0.090421-1700_x64fre_client_en-us_retail_ultimate-grc1culxfrer_en_dvd

I have to disagree. XP is known, good, operating system that people have been using and loving for years. WIndows 7, well, Microsoft could have a feature in there, that at the end of the beta, it will lock your computer or something, or it may have a severe case of winrot after a few months.

I think I'll be sticking to XP for a few more years yet, until I can know for sure I won't loose everything ....

After trying Vista I was thinking the same thing, I didnt like at all, never left it on my system for more than a day or two. I tried it every 6 months or so hooping the updates would make it better but I always went back to XP. The thing is I was wanting a x64 bit OS that would run the old programs well and I always ran into problems.

With Windows 7 x64, changing from x32 to x64 has been almost completely transparent to me. It has run about 99% of the programs I have tried and has been problem free for me. When I first try a new OS, I do so on a different partition and keep a copy of XP so I can always boot off of it if needed, with this install I have already deleted XP off of my system.

It is faster, and allows you to use more than 3 gig of ram. If you turn the effects off it screams, I havent had any need to do this but it is always an option.

I'm kinda surprised. I'm using windows vista 64 bits actually and I've never had a single problem.

Could someone list some of these problems and bugs that makes vista so bad?

Hi,

For me, alot of it may have been largely driver support for the x64. I also had a lot of older software that just wouldn't run or install. Speed was a problem too and it was buggy, I saw a lot of little problems, lock up's. These things happened with XP too but not as often as with vista, for me anyway.

It's been a while since I tried running it, also I have a new PC that I havent tried it on. Some of the hardware on my old PC I don't think ever supported vista. My old motherboard did support it but some of the features were unavailable on the vista driver too. So my experience's may be, at least partly, just because of the hardware I was running it on.
 
Well, i'm running it on a 2200$ dell laptop with 8GB Ram etc etc, maybe this explains why it runs smooth for me. But about the bugs etc, I've never had a single problem!

I am running Windows 7 on a Core 2 duo laptop with 2GB of memory , but its running on a samsung 128GB SSD. Runs great.
 
Sorry if my statement was wrong, but as I had read a while ago these drives were reading and writing at insane speeds I thought this applied to all systems.

Seems like I can't find that article. Could you please give me the link?
