My pirated vista got all updates and was never deactivated :p Your friend just fails as a pirate, I suppose. There are windows updates that will deactivate you, but M$ isn't smart/caring enough to actually FORCE you to install the update. Always look at what updates you're installing :p

There shouldn't be any legit keys on ebay... If you buy one, you're very very likely to be ripped off. Any keys available right now would either be OEM keys stolen from a dell or HP factory, or an MSDN or TechNet test key given to beta testers and developers... Either way, you won't get any support for it, and it'll likely be deactivated within a few months of the release date.
Anyways, also, a cracked installer probably won't ask you for a key at all.
 
Why would you think legitimate MSDN keys would be deactivated after the retail release?

dont use keymaker, or cracks then. you should be ok with the msdn key , as long as it wasnt a beta or a evaluation key.
 
That is true they are limited to 10 UNIQUE activations. meaning 10 different machines or 10 iterations of the same machine with changed hardware etc..

but they would not be deactivated after the retail is released
 
My crack was pre-activated with the leaked lenova oem key. I have a machine running this that I'm going to be testing updates on before I run the updates on my main machine. My guess is MS will make no move to deactivate some of these cracks. They tried only one time with vista, and then all the good cracks were modified to auto-hide that update so you could just be carefree about updating. Microsoft has been lax on this since they stated years ago that they'd rather people pirated windows then use a mac. Pretty cool actually.

well actually you got it all wrong, with windows 7 now, the security feature is more tightened..

only months will pass by and we will seing some new security patches. Vista is just a preparation to the upcoming windows 7...

believe me its based on what i see on the MSDN forums.

even if you auto hide the updates, windows 7 connects to update server in silent mode. if you really want to.. use it offline... than go online with it.. hehehhee
 
I'm not aware of any windows ever automatically installing a hidden update when you've turned off auto updates. I'd be extremely surprised if they try something that bold, it would not at all be inline with their attitude over the past decade towards piracy.

Use netstat and take a look at ports 49156 to 491xx - that M$ looking for blacklisted keys and cracks. I have auto updates turned off. If you use the loader previously mentioned on this thread it will only work on Professional and Ultimate versions. Don't mess around with the lower versions. There is really no functional VLK anymore and Enterprise versions have to be activated annually. My recommendation for your "evaluation" is to use a loader (which uses an OEM instant activation method by imitating the appropriate Bios) or update your Bios to SLIC 2.1 and get the OEM certificates for your computer.

I would recommend clean installs on freshly wiped drives for your best results.

I've been testing Win7 since July - I have Ultimate and Enterprise 7600 RTM versions running - no problems so far and updates work.

i just succeeded having vista, ubuntu linux and Windows 7 multiboot on my laptop.. LOL... this is amazing! wahehehhe
 
1) Windows 7 does NOT use 80GB of space. Perhaps you meant 8GB?

2) Even if there is a virus integrated into it, it'll be possible figure it out if you know what you're doing. One really can't alter the windows files due to windows file protection. There was a program I used to use on my downloaded XP iso's to see if it was making connections behind my back to strange ip's. It was called wireshark I believe.

3) Windows 7 is hands down the BEST OS by MS to date. It totally blows Vista & XP under the table with it's lightning fast boot times, speed, driver installations and security features. I've been using it since January's beta version was released. Right now I'm using the RC1 version. However I have Win 7 RTM build 7600 downloaded onto a DVD already with the x86/x64 installer on one DVD.

Also, what antivirus do you guys use/recommend? I'm using ESET Smart Security at the moment.
