First off I wasn't sure weather to put this in the Infrared section or here but since it deals with safety I put it here.

But lately a fear of mine is that what if some ass hole makes a powerful infrared handheld laser and hides it in their jacket sleeve or something and walking down the street shines it in peoples eyes :scared:. Like I mean he wouldn't be able to aim it very well but I mean what are the chances. IDK but this is just something that's been on my mind lately XD.

Someone else brought up this subject with me just a few days ago and asked if someone could go to a crowded place and burn or blind people with an invisible laser. I tried to explain how impractical that would be.

I don't really think this should even be discussed here, we don't want to give anyone ideas.

Edited out my post. Like Alan said, it's best to not discuss these kind of things here.

But still....what?

Maybe it's the same guy that wanted a laser mounted on his car to "pop tires of people that may chase him" :D

 Now that you bring that up I just have to post this again. Don't anyone let lasers scare the living daylights out of you.

Well... I do sometimes... please don't hurt me

I was thinking of this just a few days ago. Although it was more along the lines of making peoples clothes seem to spontaneously combust. Of course I would never ever do something like that, but... what if?

That persons eyes will be harmed by fists!!

Comment of the day. Lol.

But really, we have 4,000 watt Trumpf IR lasers at my place of employment that are used to weld metal. I have always wanted to just stick, say, a phone book or something else nice and thick in its way just to see if it could just blast a hole straight through it. I've also wondered if it could possibly take off any of my remaining fingers with ease. It's just that curiosity that goes something like "Ok, I know that this thing is STUPIDLY POWERFUL. But just HOW stupidly powerful is it?" Haha.

It is dumb stuff like this that ruins it for everyone. Having grown up in Manhattan I thought I had seen everything, including some really dumb stuff. I have lived in the DC area for over 30 years and have had patients from everey three lettered agency you can name, particularly in law enforcement at the Federal level. These people have nothing better to do than look out for "stupid stuff" which they can pressure congressional leaders to write legislation.

Back in the 90s I collected Tittle II firearms and became a class 3 dealer to keep costs down. Responding to gun control people, he made it impossible for hobbiests to keep their dealer status.

You keep seeing news reports about kids pointing lasers as aircraft. I used to fly for fun and am still involved with AOPA and I can tell you that pilots are clamering for legislation to put an outright ban on laser ownership. Just wait and see. If we keep seeing lasers in the news you can bet leglistaltion will be passed.

It is the same thing with drones, really just another type of RC like we had as kids. You better buy one now because sooner or later some legislation will be passed curtailing or banning ownership.

@Pi R Squared. I really appreciate the video. Now I know what happend to my car when I tried to get away from a speeding ticket ;-)

As for laser power, there are plenty of examples better than this:
