This is incredible.

The scary thing is that no one knows when it will stop, this could go on for months...

On a semi-funny note, today someone said it must be horrible for the people of iceland...

My reply..."Not really, they are now like that one asshole on the road, who hasn't serviced his car in ages, spewing out a load of noxious crap at the people behind him, he himself not affected and continuing merrily on his journey"

...well except the flooding caused by the melting glacier that sort of blows...

Anybody up for an IFR landing?

Now THAT would be exciting! :tinfoil:

Peace,
dave

Ehm, with windows sandblasted AND also motors sticked ? ..... Can i think about it a minute, before reply ? (where the hell i put my damn parachute ?) ..... :p :D

Yes, that can block the engines, not just cause re-melting, also cause, basically, volcanic ashes are in good part composed from vetrified stone powder ..... is like throw a bag of sandpaper compound into the rolling parts :p :D ..... also, it can sand and opacize the glasses of the windows in a minute or less, at that speed ..... not the maximum of the comfort, for a pilot :p

The engine bearings getting messed up is the least of your worries for engine damage. The air path is the bigger problem. Everything in front of the combustion chamber will be severely erroded which will reduce thrust output. It will melt once it reaches the combustion chamber, obviously. The molten "ash" will then stick to the surfaces behind the combustion chamber as seen in the picture in my previous post. The rough surfaces will disrupt airflow thereby reducing efficiency. That will also decrease thrust output. The blocked cooling holes will increase exhaust gas temperature and prevent airflow through exhaust components for cooling purposes. The pilot may or may not throttle up to increase thrust. If (s)he does, that just multiplies the amount of heat in the exhaust section.

My school has these senior trips that the seniors spend 3 months on, one kid was going to germany for his but now he's stuck in cleveland. Bummer. And laserbee said that one time all 4 engines failed, this is true but thankfully they were able to get 2 working again. The plane dropped from ~35000 feet to <10000 feet before they got the engines working IIRC.

Forget the bread have a little french woman with that wine and cheese... That's what I'd do...:D

Well.... have some French Bread.. Cheese and Wine while
