This is what happens to the engines that ingest the ash.

BTW, volcanic ash isn't like normal ash. It is usually very fine rock. The particals are smaller than sand particals.

I saw a news report last night and a reporter was talking to a
Pilot that had gone though a Volcanic dust cloud some years ago
and all 4 engines stopped working due to the volcanic dust reheating
and sticking to the turbine blades...
Luckily he was able to land safely...

Volcanic ash is mostly composed of a glass like material. Jet engines operate at the same temperatures that melt that material. A bunch of molten glass flying around inside a jet engine is apparently a bad thing ;)

Yes, that can block the engines, not just cause re-melting, also cause, basically, volcanic ashes are in good part composed from vetrified stone powder ..... is like throw a bag of sandpaper compound into the rolling parts :p :D ..... also, it can sand and opacize the glasses of the windows in a minute or less, at that speed ..... not the maximum of the comfort, for a pilot :p

Are the airliners paying for the room and board of all of these people or is everyone having to fork out their own cash? I'm guessing that a lot of these people who are stranded there don't have a place to go or stay.
