The XBOX 360 HD-DVD high power laser thread

ive recently been in contact with Thorlabs about their 400nm-600nm glass optics. I'll probably be ordering one soon. Im going to try to mod my kryton v2 (when it gets here) to fit the module. roughly speaking its around $120 for the housing and lens (a bit pricey, but with the increase in power that has been talked about here, i think it may be worth it)

Something interesting I've discovered after de-canning both the strong xbox diodes as well as the 6x diode, is that they look identical on the inside. Also the marking on the back looks very similar, but I cant see it well enough to say they are the same.

Another note is that I finally did some comparisons on can vs no can on these 'stronger' diodes. I can safely say the open can version has a bit more power. I can notice a stronger tingle on my skin, as well as overall brightness of the dot and beam. I really wish I had a power meter so I can see just how much stronger the open can is, but I dont.

thats interesting indeed. mayb those xbox diodes are simply underperforming 6x diodes sifted out during production?... care to post close-ups of both LDs?

I can try... its on my cell phone... it does ok but they wont be the best pictures in the world

Here is the 6x diode....

and here is the stronger of the hd-dvd diodes

i wish i could see but am blocked from here at work been running mine off and on at work all day rkcstr 86 ma in a dx host with 2 unprotected 3.6 lithiums working great only prob is it wont burn or pop unless i focus it but after i focus it wont shine far away it loses divergence so i'll set it for infinity and leave her alone oops i better say it or the wife will get jealous

ok so what is a safe ma to drive it with to have 2-3 hour life.I would use washers as a heat sink.

Why would you only want 20-30 hours of diode life?

The power difference would not be that great, compared to a reasonably safe current. You probably wouldn't notice the difference visually, unless you were holding two side by side. Only on a power meter would the difference be noticable.

You should go for 80mW for a long life, maybe 90mW, but not much more.

You could get 105mW after optics, if you really pushed it, but there is no telling how long it would live.

at 90ma your getting 106 mw! :o :o :o :o :D.

Um i think you mean 80mW according to the graph on page 1. I got bit by the bug, i've got two hd drives on the way, a rkcstar driver, and aixiz module on the way! :)

90mA = 80mW without any optics,
90mA = 68mW after a clear acrylic lens, (less with an AR coated lens since they are coated for the wrong wavelength - 650nm)
90mA = 60mW after a glass 650nm AR coated lens.

The graph was done without any optics. Optics decrease the power, clear acrylic lenses woul seem to be the best for now, except expensive 405nm AR coated lenses.

Well, we all know that each diode will differ slightly. The lens choice will affect the power readings as well. The other thing to consider is the meter used to measure the laser.

For high power red builds, my readings are in line with Lava's graphs. But I sent a 258mW open can build to Senkat for him to do a review, and his thermal meter reading was 288mW's:

That said, let me tell you about my readings...

When I built my 6 X blu-ray, I took readings with my LPM-1 on the 473nm setting. (no 405 setting). I once read somewhere that you take the 473nm reading, and multiply it by 1.75 to get the conversion to 405nm. After getting a weak conversion at 85mA's, I contacted Hemlock Mike to ask his opinion about the LPM-1 conversion. He told me that multiplying by a factor of 2.6 was about right.

I then took the same reading and multiplied it by 2.6, and the conversion was right in line with Lava's 6 X graph!

Now, I would love to know some other comparisons against the LPM-1 with different meters. I would like to know what others have found for the correct conversion to 405nm with the LPM-1. For now, I am satisfied that Hemlock Mike's recommendation was right in line with Lava's graph.

I would guess that it is between 2.0 and 2.6. But 1.75 is definitely not correct. Way too low on the graph.

This PHR-803T diode measures (at 90mA's), HOTTER than my 6 X diode at 100mA's!.

Using an AixiZ acrylic lens (plastic cut away), and my LPM-1 (473nm), here were the readings against my 6 X:

* 6 X  @ 100mA's - 38.8mW X 2.6 = 100mW's (Then I put a Meredith glass lens in there and got a reading of 50.19mW's X 2.6 = 130.5mW's)

* 803-T @ 90mA's - 41.1mW's X 2.6 = 106mW's. (This must be an above average 803-T diode, because it is HOTTER than my 6 X diode)
Jay

P.S. I believe Lava did the 803-T graph with an AixiZ acrylic lens. (plastic cut away)

Sweet or dare i say Schweet! ;D
Yeah i could have sworn drlavas readings were with aixiz zcrylic with plastic cut away.
