Scientists find how magic mushrooms alter the mind
Scientists studying the effects of the psychedelic chemical in magic mushrooms have found the human brain displays a similar pattern of activity during dreams as it does during a mind-expanding drug trip.

Boxes containing magic mushrooms are displayed at a coffee and smart shop in Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

People who use psychedelic drugs often describe "expanded consciousness", including vivid imagination and dream-like states.

To explore the biological basis of these experiences, Tagliazucchi's team analyzed brain imaging data from 15 volunteers who were given psilocybin intravenously while they lay in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner.

The volunteers were scanned under the influence of psilocybin and when they had been injected with a placebo, or dummy drug. The researchers looked at fluctuations in what is called the blood-oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal, which tracks activity levels in the brain.

They found that with psilocybin, activity in the more primitive brain network linked to emotional thinking became more pronounced, with several parts of the network - such as the hippocampus and anterior cingulate cortex - active at the same time. This pattern is similar to when people are dreaming.

They also found that volunteers on psilocybin had more disjointed and uncoordinated activity in the brain network that is linked to high-level thinking, including self-consciousness.

"People often describe taking psilocybin as producing a dreamlike state and our findings have, for the first time, provided a physical representation for the experience in the brain," said Robin Carhart-Harris of Imperial College London's department of medicine, who also worked on the study.

"I was fascinated to see similarities between the pattern of brain activity in a psychedelic state and the pattern of brain activity during dream sleep, especially as both involve the primitive areas of the brain linked to emotions and memory."

hmmmm . . . mushrooms, lasers and Pink Floyd?

Been there..done that at the '94 Division Bell tour.

The best thing about mushrooms is it brings out all kinds of emotions. You can sit there and laugh for hours over nothing. After you come down you feel elated and emotionally balanced. The best way I can describe it is its like dumping out an unorganized file cabinet then picking up the files and putting them back in the right order. The elation lasts for around 3 days. Then all your typical emotional baggage comes crashing back in again. :o

I got fronted a quarter pound of mushrooms to sell. I was suppose to make $750 profit plus $300 to pay off the guy. In the end I still owed the guy $200. :D In case I was not clear I ate $950 worth of mushrooms in about 2 weeks. :eg:

That is one hell of a trip.. I think for the best trip like with what mushrooms gives you is peyote! I can not eat mushrooms dont like them any way shape or form but Peyote that trip will blow your mind.. I have a friend that is a shaman for the local Colvill tribe and he gets some sent up to him from arizona every six months or so.. I have gone on dream walks and I tell you its the most fun that you can have while your awake. I did this back in high school twenty years ago dont do that stuff any more even thought Pot is legal in Washington

Salvia was scary as shit when I did it. I did not have a good trip on it at all. Dimethoxy Ethylphenethylamine(2c-e) on the other hand was a nice 12 hour trip with tactile and visual stimuli. Great stuff but probably pretty bad for you, I don't know. But I haven't done anything like that in 4 years. All my experimenting was done in a 3 month little crazy period where I pretty much stopped going to class and tried to escape from the reality that I was failing school. Weird....it didn't help my grades any. :p

that old guy with the bag of 'shrooms on 'The Lucas Bros. animation .' made milk shoot out my nose.

BubonicCronic, thanks for sharing all that with us. I too tried mushrooms/mescalin/acid each only a couple of times in my early twenties. I don't think I would touch the stuff again today. I was more adventurous when I was young.

As I get older I realize the potential I had and basically threw it all away in pursuit of a good time. I did have a very good time and would not trade them for anything. But I look back at all the money and time I burned and realize I'd be in a better place right now if I worked harder. But I also know when we are on our death beds all we have are our experiences to reflect on and I can honestly say I have no regrets. While I was growing up all the old people in my life would complain they should have spent more of their lives in the pursuit of happiness instead of money. So thats what I did. I still do in many ways.

This is something everyone should think about. I too have not had a very successful and productive life, however I can safely say I have done and seen things that no one else has and had some great adventures that most people will never experience. So I guess that made it all worth it.

So Hak can you describe the "Rush" you got from "Shooting Out" milk???

Its like ejaculation while getting water boarded.

In other news, water is wet.

And Martinis are dry.

Did acid totally by accident one time and I will never do that stuff again had a bad trip! this was in 96. I would do peyote again though.. If you want a high that is more spiritual than just seeing stuff then peyote is one that you will like.. Funny fact about acid the United States Army messed around with it during Vietnam as a physiological weapon

I've never done a psychedelic, but a couple years ago I was on seroquel for like a year and had to come off
quick because of a bad reaction. I was "high" for like 3 days and scared the crap out of my parents. I
have a similar reaction to high doses of steroids. That landed me in the hospital complete with blackouts
and 2 weeks went by like 2 days. Haldol and thorazine are NO fun!

Mac= looks photo shopped
if not I bet I know how they did it= bees cannot resist the smell of pure honey- will land on your finger and lap it up for hours with no chance of getting stung- when they leave thewy come right back and bring friends-
If you shake the bee off your finger and back up wind you can see the bee zoning in on the hony smell in the wind- wide at first and as he gets closer you can see the bee coming in- to get a bee from your home- a dab of honey on you finger - affter she lands just walk outside and shake her off=
you could even be kind and let here get some-

The other bees do NOT follow the first bee back to the honey- she "tells" them with wiggles which way and how far-

I have never had a fear of honey bees- had an uncle who was a bee keeper.
he would scrape the bees swarming on a tree branch into a box with his bare hand--

But all of that was before Africanized bees-- new ball game

and forget hornets and yellow jackets they are very scary .
the blue muddawbers wasps are more like bees.

I also think that eye was on a woman

hak

I would think the hard part was putting honey near the eye.

Seroquel is bad news. I tried it a few times and liked it way too much. I stopped after my nieces husband got murdered begging a drug dealer for Seroquel pills. It also has the reputation of turning women into diabetics.

I used to buy acid in sheets. I've found there are two types of acid. The first is the type that puts knots in your stomach and makes you grind your teeth and have moderate visuals. This was common and the only thing I knew till I hooked up with the Rainbow Commune. Their acid opened a cartoon world of sights and sounds with none of that Speed effects. I went to a gathering once and they spayed it on your face when you enter the circle. I peeked for 8 hours. The total trip was around 12. I experience shared telepathy and actual sounds that matched the visions I was experiencing. I could hear the wind blowing through the waving pubic hair of the girl I was with. I could command the fire with my thoughts and multi-colored worm holes opened in front of us. I stood in one but didnt have the nerve to walk though.

It was not for the faint of heart.

Sounds like a hell of a trip! the one time and only time I did acid was totally on accident. I went to a friend of mine to get a stamp to mail a letter.. Well got a stamp but the thing of it was he gave me one of his (special) stamps.. well I did two hits of some good stuff.. All about the 6 and a half hours I was on that wild ride was seeing fantasy creatures running around me and little Lepucan female with big breast running up my legs and kissing me on the cheeks. It was kind of wild.. My favorite trip was the one I was on when i did my dream walk with a shaman from the Covill tribe here in washington.. But that was twenty years ago.. but it was fun

I do get crazy powerful déjà vu sometimes which then actually turns out to be a look into the future or a premonition, so I can sympathise with the thought of projections.

I've never been one to try hard drugs but the way you and others describe the trips makes me wonder, do such drugs strip the veil away from the world we're forced to see and reveal its true nature? Sort of like the matrix. I've wanted to try various things but as I already have a nervous disposition I'm not sure it's a particularly good idea. The idea of seeing the un censored world is tempting though as theories like the matrix is just one that I give credence to, and I genuinely believe that in some ways we only see what we are supposed to see, and that what's real is not what we think it is.
