The Devils Brother. Tri "3x" Red Phlatlight LEDs in a Maglite Build" 9A

Re: The Devils Brother. Tri "3x" Red Phlatlight LEDs in a Maglite Build" 9A

Awesome work. I love it.:gj:

Have you though about these cells. I would think they would be perfect for that build. I have 4 sitting here that I have been planning on doing a Red build with but have not had the time.:cryyy:

I also just ordered two of these to try out as well.:eg:

Yes I have:

They are Great Cells. Those are the 26650 i had mention in the OP.

Off 2 cells they Power the 3 LEDs Just Under 8A when fully charge then stay around 7-7.5A for most of there charge.:)

Im looking for 2 cells that can put out 8A - 8.5A or even 9A for most of the time like the 3x A123 18650 do but without all that extra voltage. So iam hoping these new Cells that are coming in it will work.

You have any other Ideas.?

You think those you linked will work.???

Edit: ^^^ THose will Fit Perfect in the 4D Mag.:D

I just want to know if it will be too much .?

You can never have too much capacity.

This one might fit better running the LED's in parallel.
LiFePO4 Battery (A123 32157)_A123 32113_Batteries_A123 batteries,motorcycle battery,golf cart batteries,car batteries,car battery

What I meant is not the Capacity but the Continuous Discharge Rate "C".?

Or that does not mater either.? It will only take what it want.?

Iam going to go with these First:
High Power Automotive AHR32113M1Ultra_A123 32113_Batteries_A123 batteries,motorcycle battery,golf cart batteries,car batteries,car battery

Before I rewire the whole Light for these:
LiFePO4 Battery (A123 32157)_A123 32113_Batteries_A123 batteries,motorcycle battery,golf cart batteries,car batteries,car battery

^^^ That one will be a little short for a 4D mag But i can make a spacer like iam doing with the 18650 now.:)

THanks for the Tips.

I hope one of these do the trick.:)

The current draw of the LED's when direct driving them will be based on the voltage of the battery. That is one of the reasons to use Lipo's as Li-Ions that will charge to 4.2V and if they could handle the current draw would give way to much current to the LED. The 3.6V fully charged Lipo happens to be almost perfect if not a few tenths of a volt under the max operating current of the LED based on the spec sheet.

Now you would still need to rewire your host if you went with the 32113 as it is just a very big brother to a single one of the 18650's you are using right now. So if you wanted to continue to run the LED's in series you would need three of the 32113's in series. But if you wired them in parallel then you would be fine. The cell is capable of 30C discharge so that is like 120A that it can provide so no worries about stacking the LED's up in parallel as at most you will be drawing ~30A. But then that leaves you with needing to make sure the switch and wiring in the host that is now handling ~10A @ 10.8V can handle going to ~30A @ 3.6V. So there are a few concerns that you should be thinking of.;)

Re: The Devils Brother. Tri "3x" Red Phlatlight LEDs in a Maglite Build" 9A

Thats what I was getting confused about. OK Thank you for the Detail Explanation.+1

The Wiring is Good But the switch wont take it. No Worries I will Modify it so it will.:)

Awesome.

Nice flashlight :)

Do you consider selling those ?

Cheers.

Wow nice work there...

I guess you really like over kill huh?

I can't imagine needing more than what I got out of a single PT-54 emitter at 9 Amps.

I was going for focus, throw, and run time. (32650's)

But man, you really put a lot into that build. Nice job with it. From the video, it looks like more of a flood correct? Hard to tell...

Are you feeding 9 Amps per emitter??

Very cool how you designed the heatsink disk for the emitters, mounting the reflector and stuff... :gj:

Thanks Jay.

Haha. Ive got so many of these laying around that i said why build 3 different lights when i can build 1.:eg:

Its Hard to tell from the video but its I balance between flood and Beam. Without fog its more of Flood to the eye but with fog or mist in the air you can see the beam pretty well.:) However even with 3 LEDs its Nothing like this build with throw:
http://laserpointerforums.com/f66/new-platlight-build-nf-009-host-10a-awesome-65675.html

Last night we had alot of misty fog and i took a bunch of beam pictures.:D I think you will get a better idea then.:)

Well Right Now The LEDs are in Series so im feeding 9A to all 3 of the LEDs.

But its too much voltage and its popping a led off one of the LED's if i run it with the 3x 18650s for more then 20 seconds or so.

Im first going to wait till my 32600 cells come in o test before i Order the ones DTR recommend and Rewire the whole build to parallel.:)

Yeah i dint expect the reflector to be so deep. even though i measured it before i bought it, it dint seem so deep until i got it and had to take some metal out of the head.:)

It was a Long build but im Glad its pretty much done now other then the battery thing and the wire popping off. That will be fixed in the up coming days when parts come in.:)

Re: The Devils Brother. Tri "3x" Red Phlatlight LEDs in a Maglite Build" 9A

Alright Guys sorry for the late update on this.

I actually just fixed and finish the Power issue i was having.

I got the batteries in a few weeks ago that i ordered alittle wail go which where these cells:
High Power Automotive AHR32113M1Ultra_A123 32113_Batteries_A123 batteries,motorcycle battery,golf cart batteries,car batteries,car battery

They where able to power the build just fine in fact to 9A and they held it there for some time. However the Heat issue was just too much to deal with. Literally i only had 30 seconds before the build was to hot for my liking. Then needed a long cool down period. This was due to Direct drive and the little extra voltage it was giving to the LED's.

So i ended up selling the cells to a friend over on CPF.:)

So what Next.

I had the option to rewire the whole light and use this cell alone:
High Quality Original Lithium Ion Battery LiFePO4 Battery (A123 32157)_A123 32113_Batteries_A123 batteries,motorcycle battery,golf cart batteries,car batteries,car battery

Which would have been able to power this guy up no problem. But still i would run into the heat issue.

Final my search went on to find a Driver. I dint just find a driver but i found one that works down right amazing.

DSC01040.jpg

DSC01039.jpg

This driver according to my china supplier can run 6-16v and can be run at a Max of 15A. WITH NO HEATSINK.

The Driver came set to 2.5A set for an XML led. So I had to change the resistor to increase the currant.

My test show this driver can do 13-14A. With no heatsinking. The driver does get Hot to the touch at 10A after being on for 3 minutes but i think that "Hot" is not anywhere close to over heating. Regardless the build lone can not be on for more then 2 minutes on High mode so i dint even bother to heatsink the driver.

So i new this is the driver i was looking for for this build. A bonus too it has 5 modes. Which is awesome. Reason because when i feel its getting to hot on high mode i can switch over to med or low and use it in hose modes till it cools down a bit.

I have it right now set to around >10A. Its taking it just fine. No wires popping off the LED, the build gets no where close to s hot when i was Direct driving it and it has modes.

i cant be more happier then iam now with this.

I will have to recheck the numbers for each mode what it puts out but i know High is >10A.

Right now iam using 3x 18650 4.2v Sanyo 2600mah cells but they get drained quick so I'm going to upgrade to 3x 26650 4.2v which i have 2 right now and waiting for the third one to come in. here are a Picture of the 26650 iam going to use:

DSC01042.jpg

But i have a feeling even these wont be enough. Since they are in series the capacity stays the say wail the voltage combines from the 3 cells.

So iam looking for a good deal of 32600/32650. Any tips would be much appreciated.:)

Then i would have to use a Sleeve for the batteries in the tub also.

Since i did not know if this would work i dint take pictures of hooking it back up. I have to take it apart again so when i do and put it back together i will take some pictures on how i installed it.

Here is a New video I did with the Beast:

Might have to turn your volume up a little to hear me talk. I had to be quit as the Girlfriend is sleeping.:shhh:

Strobe mode i can tell you is blinding. I cant see anything in the room.:scared::crackup:

Its scary how bright it is in this WL.

I just got in my 5x LED Reflector.

Whaaaaat.:undecided: I know i have a problem.:eg:

WOw! That is an unreal output on the diodes! I'd be extremely careful using it around cameras as the light is powerful enough to do some damage to your CCD. I can imagine this LED would be great to drive one of those starwars lightsaber builds.
Nice work. Merry Xmas from South Korea

Ha, yea its very bright. The Camera i use is a Pocket HD camcorder. I have 2 of the same kind. Which the one i actual use for laser videos, flashlight videos etc i dint care about since there is some damage on the casing from my nephew dropping it.

So Loosing this pocket came wont matter to me. I also have quit a few of a couple year old pocket cam's to back that up as well that i dont use anymore. However this one has been going strong for a long time, since i started this forum and has seen far more brighter light then this.:eg:

I dot use my Expensive camera and camcorders "what i think is Expensive" on crazy bright lasers on flashlights in this case. Too much of a Risk.

But yea Ive seen a few people with damage cameras over the time here on the forum.

This guy is bright. Almost Unbearable on high and forget it on strobe i cant even see anything in the room.

Cant wait for a foggy night to take this guy in the back yard.

Merry Christmas to you buddy.

Mind sharing the source of those drivers? I've got a few of these phatlight LED's here and have been searching for a driver for ages!
