So I dissassebled a whole bunch of DL DVD burners at work today

I kinda wanna trade them for a good diode that I can mount for a nice circular red burning laser diode.

Have anyone tried figuring out polarity by using the diode test setting of e.g. a flukemeter.
Or will it fry the diode if you start with the wrong polarity?

That, or just use a low current like 25mA or so and test it. One way you'll get dim red light, not enough to lase though. And all the other combinations would just result in nothing or maybe a little red glow on the IR. 25mA isn't really enough to cause any damage though reversed. LD's still act like diodes, after all.

All I can say is Sweeeeet. I hope that mine is the same diode. I will have to do some major reconstructive surgery on this thing but if it turns out like that one will be worth it.

Does anyone think this is a TO18 variant? If not Rayfoss got some bad specs on the 12X Lite On Sleds. Wonder if they got the specs from Lite On or made them up.

I did order one of these from eBay. 250mW 650nm diode $11.50 shipped

So, anyone have any advice on how to power and mount one of these strange diodes?

Or anyone in DfW willing to trade me one of them for an aixiz module?

You power it like you would any other red. The actual diode emitter is the same as any other red diode. Mounting it is where you have to get creative. That's why I said so far, not many people use these because they're not as straightforward as just pressing in an aixiz module.

That's why I haven't touched the housings yet. Ready for whoever wants to work with them.

Indeed, i doubt anyone wants to bother with odd diodes like these when 5.6mm LOC and LCC diodes are readily available. To each his own, but i'm not gonna bother half a day tinkering with something that can be replaced by a <10$ part that readily fits.

Hence why I kinda want to trade them. I want to make a nice easy laser first.

I could be wrong but it's unlikely you'll find anyone wanting to trade these for any TO18's of any decent power. If you find anyone. Let me know too. I have a few of these myself... and some in much much worse packages... heh. (12 pins measuring about 30mm x 8mm. Has the LD plus all the photodetectors for the cd/dvd pickup in the same sealed package.. Came out of an Aopen drive I think)

I recommend you pick up a GGW sled from Kendall(sk8er4514) >>here<<, he is also in Arlington, so shipping will be really fast.

That sled has both a high power blu-ray(6x) and red diode (referred to as LCC).

My bad, I meant to say in my first post 24X. I knew they looked familiar.

Me too. These are my favorite!!! I love twofers!!! ;)

Can they be identified by looking at the dichros?
This is a random guess so excuse me if i am sounding like an idiot.
I thought dichros seem to flect a certain color from each side depending on what they are made to pass or reflect? Can't he simply look at the sides face the diode to find out what they are made to pass or reflect, thus knowing which diodes they are?

I'm either going to look really dumb or give a great suggestion :D

Sometimes. Some of the sleds i've stripped, the 660 side had a yellowish tint looking through it and the IR doesn't. Though on some sleds both sides have looked clear.
