So I dissassebled a whole bunch of DL DVD burners at work today

The spec sheet for the sled that I got mine out of says it is a 660nm.

I read that someone was running the diode They harvested from a Lite-On LightScribe drive at 250ma with no problems. You might be able to safely go with 300ma for a short while,
 
Dug up the spec sheet. My biggest questions were which pins are positive/negative and what would I be able to mount this thing in?

Wavelength:658-660nm
Power Output CW 250-300mW(Tolerance is based on the ability of your driver)
Working Current: I<380mA
Sealed Size: TO18(5.6mm)

Um, have you tried searching? Diode pinouts aren't hard to find. Also. TO18 cans fit in aixiz modules. :p

I actually did quite a bit of searching and everything I found was a round 5.6 diodes that fits into an Aixiz module. I got frustrated and asked a few questions and got the same reply you just gave to search the red diodes, PHR, LOC again and did some more to no avail and gave up. If you look at this diode when you get it out it has a rectangular shape that is smaller than the circumference of a 5.6 diode on the thin side. What I was left with was how does a rectangle go into a circle opening on an Aixiz module?

And that Is where I last left it.

Here is the only thing I found in my searching that made any sense. Found it doing a google image search for TO18 LINK
I even started to think this is not even a diode.

I believe some members in the past found diodes similar to that in 22X dvd burners when they first appeared on the market. Maybe if a more knowledgeable member see's this they can inform you further on the specifications of the diode, but those do look damn close to the 22X ones. Maybe a search could lead to to an old thread with pictures or something.

Yea I think they are just a real rare diodes. Was just hoping someone had seen them before. I think that rayfoss may have just thrown TO18 on the spec sheet because it sounded right.

I did a Google image search for 22X 660nm and was looking through the pics. Did not find anything that looks like this but It was humorous half way down the page a lot of the images are the avatars for members on this site.

When you were asking about the diodes, I thought you were asking about the TO18's, not the plastic ones. Sorry.

There is no need to do so for electrical testing. Generally, red laser diodes will have the case connected to the negative electrode, while infrared ones have the positive electrode wired to the case.

The only thing needed for testing would be a ca 100 mA constant current source, with a limited open-circuit voltage of 5 volts or so. Two lithium cells and the DDL current supply will easily suffice if you do not have a lab power supply that allows limiting both voltage and current.

As for how the diodes look: The 5.6mm round can is fairly standard, but some dvd writers employ odd-shaped laser diodes with a rectangular body. There is no reason those diodes are any less suitable for laser projects, apart from the difficulty in finding a good housing for them with an adjustable lens to match. I've even seen people mount odd size diodes in aixiz housings using thermal expoxy and such - its feasible, but doesnt make life easier at all.
