Reputation system: meaning & value

Curtis I understand that the ATM signing stands for "At This Moment" ,

But this IMO "In My Opinion" is great! It might be useful if you make a sling with a girl and you are in closed environments, then these abbreviations can fit the enjoyment "ah, ah, yea yea"

Here's what I've invented to give you a new way to enjoy monosyllables.

Anyway I instead of IMO I prefer EMO Girl

Forgive me if I'm not completely in sych with your first post in this thread, I'm just too exhausted to read through all of it today. However I will add this; I wouldn't put too much concern into what is happening with the rep system, in my view it's just a way to give pats on the backs or slaps upside the head, that was its whole purpose to begin with. Later entry permissions to buy and sell were attached to the numbers, admittance into the vet section too but regardless of having 1000 posts or not, you still can't get in without being a member for a full year. At least, that was the standard I had to meet. Regarding the buy and sell requirement, it is tied to 20 posts and a positive rep, doesn't matter how many reps you have or not to use the BST section which is also moderated, requiring approval.

Here's what I thank can be done to slow the rep system inflation.

Restrict the number of reps which can be given in a day from 10 to 5, or perhaps lower. That will slow the rise down, but it won't stop it, too late now, too many members have over 10K. Also, you could chop everyone who has a rep over 1000 down to some percentage, but this artificially inflates the value of those who weren't chopped. I don't think that can work, maybe if you chopped everyones reps down by 1/10 that will slow the inflation but what have you really accomplished? The ratios will remain exactly the same, but yes, the inflation will be slowed for awhile. If it is just high numbers you don't like I don't see the point. If it is how fast the numbers are rising then limit the amount of reps which can be given a day to 1, but without also reducing everyones reps at the same time no one will be able to ever catch up to some of the guys with uber high reps, you are then limiting them.

The only real problem I see with rep inflation are the inactive member rep numbers being left in the dust, but they are inactive, so?

Only solution I can see to the out of control rep inflation is to remove the reps for everyone at one swoop and start over, but you know how well that will float among the group, lead balloon. Maybe just get rid of it all together but if you do that, don't start it up again later. Truth is, I've said this before, we don't need a rep system, not a need... but I do believe it enhances good will among members whether out of control rising or not.

My best solution regarding the sky rocketing rep system inflation is to remove the numbers, only show tiles. Let the tiles remain tied to the numbers, but the numbers themselves hidden. That way some arse here can't really damage anyones rep, at least, not that you can see, also allows us to neg rep a new arse into red if they haven't been here long enough. That sure stops the inflation, what inflation? Green tiles appear to be compressed at the top, or just don't continue further after a certain length. I had been very outspoken about removing the rep system all together two years ago when it was being abused by a member who had the highest rep here and was using it as a way to bully members. That is no longer happening because he's no longer on top to do so, problem solved, but inflation, well.... it's a rocket!

Alaskan, nothing to forgive. ;) I should have written it more clearly with bolded main key parts. Whatever, just short overview of the key points for you:

I'm just saying that the inflation is natural property of the system. Not meaning it is wrong at all (therefore no change is really needed to be made in the system itself). The community can be working well at certain inflation rate, as similar to economics. The only problem might be if there are reps given "for free" (or for little to no value of post), which I believe could be separated from inflation to be observed, if we need to adjust how system is used (by some recommendations, rules etc. not changing the system itself).

The problem occurs just if natural inflation property of the system is not understood well and possibly comparsion of the rep score is made - it does not make sense - that's what I'm saying in OP. Members here are mostly aware of this and take rep as reward tool, not as comparsion - that is good and rep has value in this, what I say in OP.

As the unitary value of rep point decreases in time due inflation (again even if system is used well, there is natural inflation property in it due how it is designed), the members "have" to contribute to keep the score with others, otherwise we have situations where member with more contribution is left behind due to inactivity. I'm not saying it is bad to be inactive for some time. It just could make FOR THOSE unaware of it (newcomers, people appearing here only for some moment to seek advice...) this inactive member's post as less "trustworthy" than from someone less experienced but with higher score (since this guy was able to reach high score due to inflation matter and short activity recently).

As a solution of it I suggest to use signature space creatively to give reference about yourself, present some key contributions etc. I used example of my signature and how I use it in this way. Now there is this problem solved for me and anyone can see what I do, what lasers I use, who I am and if I say something, the reader might get some reference. Reputation therefore is not needed as a score as my key contributions made are shortlisted and there are another references in the signature.

BTW: Have you seen episode of Mythbusters where they made lead balloon? You should reconsider use of this phrase after seeing this. :D

Edit: For hot weather get pint of well cooled beer. But carefull with that. :D :D :D

What the actual...?

Well, I will continue to give away both earned and free reps, I'm the candy man! I do usually reserve them to proven members though, rarely anyone who has just joined. I won't rep someone with free reps for months after joining and then only if active. All of this is a matter of perspective regarding what is free or not, but often I will rep good members for no other reason than I want to do so.

If the metal is thin enough in relation to the amount of gas the balloon can hold, lots of materials will work, copper, silver, anything soft enough would work, I suppose. When I think of a lead balloon I think of thick, I guess I messed up should have said thick lead balloon, as long as we are splitting hairs, but I don't think my meaning was lost.

Alaskan, do whatever you think is right.

Regarding the balloon: That was very difficult for them as you know lead - if thin plate is made it tears easily. But that was an awesome experiment. I love how they took even absurd things to test. ;)

Edit: After reading edited version of your post it cannot be said those reps you give are not for free IMO. You just appreciate that member for some value. I was inaccurate saying that should be related to certain post (sorry). Even I do it same way and see it as legit.

No, meaning was not lost. ;) I just wanted to let you aware of the experiment they did.

The cool thing to try to do is see how thin you can make the metal to hold the gas for a period of time. How balloons get lift is interesting, I believe the material must be soft or it won't float, but then why do hard shelled boats float on water?

Edit: I suppose a hard shelled container could float too, if the container is light enough and won't collapse from the air pressure around it. I just did some googling, can't find an answer to the contrary.

Alaskan, Archimedes applies. ;) Air or water. The problem is if material is too soft and not flexible it tears. Gasses tend to follow about the same volume under the certain pressure and temperature. Search for Avogadro constant, Boltzman constant and implying molar gas constant and equation of state (pV=nRT) for more.

I'm OK, just that it's getting too hot over here, 120+ in the day and had to work outside all day yesterday. I'm paid for 10 hours a day, 8 on Friday, working 7 days a week. The military work 12+ hours a day, often 14-16 and think that I should too, because I am here to support them. So if I don't do it, regardless of being paid for less hours, then I'm a shyt. In time, out here shyt's loose their jobs.
Holly crap... When are you going to retire and
spend some of that hard earned $$$. ;)

Yeah... been there done that twice.
At least the 2nd time was 20 years later and
had her sign a pre-nup... After a year with her
I caught her cheating and it only cost me the
layer's fees, one of my used cars, one of the
horses I owned at the time and $1000 cash.

With the first one I lost everything except the
clothes on my back. You live....You learn.

Yeah, I think many of us have been down this road. I'm perfectly happy to live alone and see my daughter every week. I lost in every single one of my divorces.

Well since every one is throwing in their two cents I am going to throw mine is as well. Since I joined LPF I have seen the rep system be used in a good fashion and the bad fashion. Some use it to get rid of people that are not to their liking. They also use it to push people that they can use to further their own agenda's on lpf. Now I know that last statement is going to irritate and or inflame some on here and more to the point I dont care if it does or not! I am here on LPF to learn more about lasers, how to have fun with said lasers, interact with like minded people. Some on here think its a popularity contest by finding out who has the most rep! I really could care less who has what rep and why they got it. I have been here three years and have just over a thousand posts. So what I dont post a lot and when I do It is for something that I think I can contribute to the discussion.

Bruce your photos are the shit! I love when you post your amazing art work on here. Dont let the bs get to you bro. You are one of my favorite posters on LPF so keep your chin up and the good work that your do!

As for some of us that have been through some of the shake ups on LPF like the whole Sci Fi laser debacle, madmacmo abrupt departure, members dying ect This community needs to stop the petty bull shit that seems to be like the plague here lately. We are supposed to be here for the enjoyment of photons and not find out who has a bigger laser or ego. I honestly think that if your bragging about something then your trying to show you have a bigger D&^k than every one else when it really could be the opposite of that.

Now that I have said my two cents I am going to leave this thread to ya'll. But in the interest of fairness I will say that I really enjoy this community and I HOPE that we can come together for the sake of the hobby and stop all the petty bs and squabbling and get down to building, buying, trading, and enjoying photon's

V

Vortish: Great points. I completely agree with what you said. Thank you for sharing your opinion. Highly appreciated. Rep+ for this (deserved well - for your time spent on this contribution).

BTW: Enjoy the photons. That should be written in LPF headline - since we do not have any stone/rock here.

Brucemir... love seeing your posts, and would plus rep you if I could, but since I don't give out reps like candy on Halloween, I can't. Hope you do keep posting though.

Hate to say I told you so (very general forum "you"), but I did :p

Rep inflation was inevitable with people giving it out as quickly as possibly for no other reason than that they could, and that it would allow them to rep more people they wanted to faster.

Now we are left with a situation where rep is meaningless, and if anything counter-indicative, since even relatively new members, whether with merit or not, can have very high rep counts.

If it's within Vbulletin capabilities, I would like the squares and comments to remain, but for the numbers to just be removed for everyone. Or drop the squares too, and leave the feedback as essentially just a comment line option, and nothing more.

I give reps out like halloween candy and proud of it :) sure put the kabash on one individual using his high reps to attack others because there are a dozen members with three times his reps now. I'd rather have an abundance of high repped individuals than that stuff we had going on here in the past. Up up and away! Although I've noticed since this thread started, I get less candy lately, others too, so it has slowed down the repping some, but not much compared to the past, too many individuals who won't conform.

It may be a nothing, but I have noticed that I can't rep as regularly at the moment.
Anyway the same for me. I'd rather have good members have the power to stop that happening again.
