Reputation system: meaning & value

Regarding your concern someone who has inflated reps might be given unearned credence in regards to knowing laser technology, if any one of us says something a bit off, or wrong, even our friends here will immediately set it strait, being wrong in this forum is exposed very quickly. That's one of the reasons I sometimes come back and qualify my posts more, refine them more, because if I don't, the wet noodle is surely to come out and slap me.

Excellent point--very true--LPF information credibility and all that rot at stake.
Not much slips by unnoticed.

Sorry to revive this thread again, but I just had to look into how the system works. I haven't payed much attention until recently the past few days, and it would seem as if the rep point system has just reached a seemingly nearly out of control exponential increase. You could look at it from a relative perspective, but when a relatively new member like me can get a couple reps from people with 1mil, it would seem to blow my reputation out of proportion. It isn't nearly as much of an issue for those with huge numbers since they already have huge numbers, but I think a slower and more steady system could be used.

Not like it matters much

..but the more accurate and reliable the rep system the better. Because if people see it, they are tempted to think about that person proportionally to their number which could affect how they weigh advice and such. Mainly an issue for newer members or those who don't understand the system as well and put too much trust in it.

Do not worry about reps. It is expected behaviour due to rep system. I think we have discussed it here quite well at the beginning of the thread (if you have looked on it, you could get what rep means). I was around half a year not active on LPF recently and how I'm lagging now.

I personally use it as kind of myself to myself metrics for my activity here. What content is enjoyed, what is perceived as valuable and helpful to others. I would not change the system untill dooms day comes (variable type overflow).

And for newcomers? It might be confusing, still there are another ways to distinguish "reputable" member here - signature, post content, overall community reaction to that post... You see there are the ways for those not familiar with reputation system to get some reference about person who answered their questions. Still there is post number, member classes... All this makes it confusing somehow, that's why we personalize our signature, profile pic, etc. To get contextual information saying more than just one number.

Edit:
I would only allowed more characters in signature - I like adding links for quick reference and I'm hitting character limit even my signature does not take that much space as a few others (and even those are comfortable to see). Just exclusion of BB tags from limit count would be fine. Or higher limit just on them.

I just want to see exponents used to make the numbers fit, is that too much to ask.

RC, try to ask Oliver, he has some stats AFAIK, maybe he could publish regression function. If I'm not wrong there was even some interpolation done by him in vet section.

Just want to say that I use link shorteners (Google has one) to save space in my signature. Haven't hit a limit yet.

Also - the rep system is built in. I'm not sure how much power Avery has over it overflowing. Or after the fact. This could turn into a support ticket with the BBCode folks at some point

Yes, that is what I'm about to do. :D I just wanted to use LPF links, but once I really cannot fit it I'll use kind of tinyurl service.

Read Post #243 and prior Posts to see why the Rep System
has changed to the way it is now.
You can no longer use the Rep System to make choices as
we did years ago before the Rep System Abuse by some LPF
members....

I remember trying to buy an LPM from Tmack when I was only here for a few months. He at first did not want to sell to me as I had no rep and was fairly new. I told him it was his choice and I would pay using PayPal. He eventually sold it to me and we became friends over that. So, times have changed a lot around here, but not for the worse, IMHO.
