If the number if reps which can be given out per day is reduced below the number it was in the past, that makes anyone else with a high rep a super-god, no one will ever approach their score again, not anyone new anyway.

I'm glad someone else finally noticed this as well. Under the current system, or a tweak to reduce how often rep can be given by altering one or both of the two numbers new members would actually be at a further disadvantage.

Rep was also not that hard to gain, and harder to lose. For all this "super-god" rep status, our recent trolls were within the top 200 reputations. Even Cyp with all his rep could take away AT MOST 5 points.

So since the points don't really matter, the issue is not going to go away with any tweak of the system that doesn't address the core issue:

Red squares, and comments people can't easily respond to or erase, and that are there for everyone else to see.

Personally I think LPF members are mature enough to handle negative feedback.

Nor should mods be asked to moderate all neg reps. They can, and do step in when blatant insults, and abuse occur, anything else, it's not keeping the peace, it's censorship.

Thanks, interesting to see that. Regarding the rep system, ask someone with several hundred reps if they think the system should go away, or reduce the amount of damage a neg they can give will do and most, if not all, of these individuals will say there isn't a problem... Ask someone new to the forum who doesn't have many points what they think of it and they are far more likely to disagree with the system. Isn't this how it is? I just think some senior members get away with pushing new members around far more than they could otherwise do if they didn't have such a heavy sword to split newbies in half with. I've had a few PM me over the last months telling me they don't say anything when a member who can devastate their rep score is abusive, due to that fear.

Maybe this is exactly what the forum needs to keep noobs in line, I don't know for sure.

100 rep points = 1 rep power. You would lose 4 rep points if CYP or ARG, were to neg rep you. 3 points or less with anyone else.

I see your point, but if fear of a neg rep, a red square with a comment, prevents someone from posting when they have additional information to offer, see a different solution or a mistake, especially when shielded by the relative anonymity of an online forum, than I don't think they are mature enough to be here, or online in general for that matter.

Which is perfectly borne out by the drama we've seen, and the exact members it came from. In that sense, the rep system was functioning perfectly.

It may be functioning perfectly, but painful when a member negs someone for something unsubstantial, just because they want to, or became upset with something on a personal level. I've been negged down below zero in the past because I posted too many UFO stories in the "other" section, which didn't make sense to me. All it took to curb my posts on that subject was ARG kindly asking me to limit those kinds of posts to once a week, I didn't need to be attacked so much to where I had a red bar running across the screen an inch long.

I'm all for being civil, and preferably polite, but I am against enforced coddling.

Again, you yourself are a perfect example of the former system working. Not only do you now have an inch long green rep bar, you're in the top 50 after just two years.

Earlier I was registered in 2012 but left the forum over being negged into the red because I didn't want to talk about the reasons why I wanted to build a particular project, I thought a member was being rude pressing me, but he thought I was being rude back, so it didn't go well... but I did come back later with a new ID, but I wasn't banned. If that is the solution you want, members leaving, or never coming back when they find a forum painful, OK, it's a success.

Edit: In case someone is worried I have two ID's, I can't get access to that account now, the email I registered it with is no longer something I can get access to, can't remember the old password.

I don't want them leaving in the first place, but again if they aren't mature enough, or care enough to stick around that's no great loss.

There is no way to provide feedback, none, that won't offend someone, sometimes.

Let's say we get rid of the rep system. What then? Someone says something stupid or offensive. Instead of getting neg repped for it by 2-3 people, those same 2-3 people comment in the thread. 2 more people then decide to comment as well. Someone else decides that something is out of line and alerts the mods. The mods come in, shut down the whole thing in the name of keeping the peace. End result? No one is happy, original thread is utterly derailed, and it inevitably boils over into another thread later on.

At least with the rep system the exchange is slower and people have some time to cool off. Without it acting as a buffer, I see fights just escalating that much faster.

Personally I think a 10/30 spread would work best. Minimum 3 day cool off period between reps. Alternatively a 1/1 spread. Abuse would be pretty obvious in both cases.

p.s. I had that same thought Infinitus, there is value in a neg and learning how not to get them, we have all seen it turn people around as I said earlier, bojule ? the guy with the new 7W from sci fi who thought burning a shiny plastic food wrapper while squinting was ok, he was stubborn but the community negs changed his heart, so it has value.

No, 3 days is not enough, I think 10 a day is ok but it should be 10/50 or better yet 10/70. 5 to 7 days is better. There is no way 1/1 would work, that would too easily allow abuse of the system.

I'm still waiting to find some kind of study which shows what the effects of kisses and slap votes really does in a forum. Are they good for the community or harmful? I don't know yet.

Really, the solution could be just as simple as a neg guideline posted in the forum, would that help stop the stupid negs from being handed out? I was negged for posting to a thread which was right at the very top of the page once as a sticky thread, the member said I was necro posting!
