You should get good results with a dipole too! Compensating for doppler shift may also help the results.

Ever considered getting your ham license? A little harder getting HF privileges in the States than here in Canada, but HF can be a lot of fun if that's the kind of thing you're into. VHF can be fun too, more exciting if you're into satellite work or climbing mountains though.

I have thought about broadcasting SSTV and
other things before. It has always been
there, but I could never really get into
it. I think it was a combination of a few
different thigs.

Now I can see why this one wasn't working.

Yeah that's just a little wiring problem.

just needs some solder

Reminds me of the time I hooked 2 12 volt SLAs together and vaporized a few pieces of metal foil with 24 volts.

Only on a scale 100x as big.

expand your horizons.....
Cool photo Smeer! I wish DL were still selling their old model beam expander.

Could you tell me what what the second expander from left to right is?

Congrats! :) Seems the US tests are harder than the Canadian tests, and there are more of them too. You can get full HF privileges with a basic (With honours, so 80% or above correct) license. Up to 250W PEP I think too.

I'm not sure what is on the Canadian tests,
but here is the question pool for the US
tests. http://ncvec.org/downloads/2014-2018%20Tech%20Pool.pdf

I regret declining the General test. The
Technician class has no 160M privileges
whatsoever and a few other limitations in
the HF bands. Then again, 160M may not be
much good for sending data, so maybe it's
not much of a loss. I don't like to talk.

I went out with a good friend of mine who likes to fly his drone around local landmarks. This was at Boots Folly, Strines Moor in Derbyshire :)

Those questions look similar to the kind of questions on the basic exam here - Lots of questions about regulations and etiquette, with some technical questions such as identifying bands and propagation modes.

The restrictions on HF for technicians seem rather tight, seems like it's CW only on all available bands except 10. :(

What kind of digital modes are you interested in? Building an efficient antenna at 160 could prove difficult if you're short on space! I much prefer digital too, went as far as to put a laptop in my truck... http://i.imgur.com/8fPCEYQ.jpg

Excuse the mess, waiting for it to warm up here before I get to cleaning!

Nice pic, deceiving that the tower is only around 90 years old though :)

If you think that's a messy truck, you won't
want to see mine. That is a very very
nice mobile indeed.

There is plenty of space here for some
sweet 160m, so it's a bit frustrating. At
least I can build something to listen in
the meantime. Anything digital interests
me as long as the information is useful in
some way. I have been picking up some
local AX.25 traffic from APRS stations for
the past week or two.

Here is my current receiver setup. I have
been looking at some iCOM uinits as a first
general purpose base station transceiver.

2m dipole to dye for

I also made a halo antenna hoping to get
some better reception, but reception was
not that great. The length is a bit off
and I haven't tried the tuning cap yet. I
also tried a 6m delta loop made from magnet
wire, both horizontal and vertical, but did
not receive anything at all, not even
interference. I'm thinking this radio just
does not work below 2m.

My apologies if that was a bad pic dump, I found some of my old photos that I lost when my last iPad died.
