Went outside to take out the trash and saw this. It looks freaky at first but turns out this circle with a rainbow around the sun is caused by air particles, I think it's pretty neat! :)

Unfortunately I can't see the images, but what you are describing sounds like what is known as a sun dog. Get them up here a lot in the winter due to ice particles in the air.

Where was it transmitted from? One of the AMSATS or the ISS? I'm too far north to get anything from the ISS :(

It was the ISS on the moo beater tand. I
don't think the rubber duck in my noob-kit
is enough to receive other satellite TXs.
That is cool, though. I didn't know they
sent SSTV.

What the hell is doing this? A friend of mine lives on a lake and every other day he finds a pile of fish that have been eaten halfway. This pile is about 100 feet from the waters edge, what animal could catch this many fish several times a week and needs that much food?

Sasquatch.

Sasquatch.

Thanks Alan but I'm in Michigan and sasquatch I believe lives closer to you :). IIRC you live in the wilderness so seeing him/her is probably more likely than me. Thanks for the laugh

Got something else for you all today......compact florescent blacklight with marble.

Two meter band? :P

Wait - you managed to receive that with the rubber duckie? You need to build a small 2m band Yagi, that'd work way better!

Please explain!

He received that image from the space station, using (by the sound of things) a VHF handheld radio (Amateur 2m band) and a computer. The image was sent using a mode of digital communication known as "Slow Scan TV" or "SSTV".

The Lightning Stalker - Maybe you can confirm? Are you an operator or were you just listening in? :)

A dude? :p

You know it could be a bear. We have them
around here now. Maybe they have worked
their way down there. It looks like it is
very selective, only eating the most fatty
parts of the fish. It could be a bear that
has just come out of hibernation.

Yes, :D well it wasn't easy. I had to
twist and contort it all different ways as
the spation moved around and the modes were
changing. As you can see, the snigal
wasn't very good.

I have a couple pieces of pipe cut and some
coax ready to try and make a simple dipole.

I don't have a HAM license or transmitter
or anything. I just picked up a handheld
scanner the other day when I heard they
were going to be sending SSTV images.

Wow that's awesome. I would set up a camera trap!

Something like Browning's Trail Cam should work fine. I used them for some research on wildlife at school.
Cuddeback is also frequently used for wildlife studies.

I'm not sure about a bear.

This is the location 42.457642, -83.821102

I want to don't have one.

You should get good results with a dipole too! Compensating for doppler shift may also help the results.

Ever considered getting your ham license? A little harder getting HF privileges in the States than here in Canada, but HF can be a lot of fun if that's the kind of thing you're into. VHF can be fun too, more exciting if you're into satellite work or climbing mountains though.
