That's a nice one! When did you get the host? Its been a few months since I've seen a new(?) one pop up.

My brother got the last 2. He was making and selling them but ran in to some personal problems so I've taken over with some of the laser stuff he was doing. He put the leather handle grip on it. I built the rest.

Are you, by chance, Abarnette's brother? Pretty similar situation that seems to be going on with him.

Perhaps... LOL... I've been trying to get things straight with everyone that he owed/owes stuff to. I've sent a lot of stuff out to people already but I'm sure there's more. I've sold off a bunch of his remaining diodes to do so. I've started investing my own money now to keep some of it going. We probably shouldn't clog up this thread about it though.

Now that I think about it... I HAVE seen that host! Abarnette had it but without the black wrap around the handle. I remember him showing it to me once but that was before the LEDs were put inside.

And yeah you're right, no need to keep clogging up this thread. Hope things are going well for you and your brother.

20W 915nm Handheld , Linear driver , Dual lipo supply ( 5.5V minimum ) .

Diode is being driven at 11.5A @ 4Vf , Its focused to a 2mm spot about 200mm away with a 1" Dia coated Convex/convex lens .

It dose produce flames : P : P

Nice project, thanks for sharing.

I've been wanting to put a high power IR diode in a host for four years now but Frankly (never mind the diary has been fairly well proven a fraud), for the amount of effort that would take and the restrictions I would face using it I haven't done so. Because of this I have two C-Mount FAC 15W 808nm diodes sitting in a box waiting to do something with them, probably will end up trying to DPSS with them.

Although! I found a high power FAP800 laser with a lens on the end makes one hell of a burner, it sure pulls the power out of my 2 VDC Cyclon lead acid battery.... Yep, 2 VDC, just so happens the FAP800 was rated for about 2 VDC and the single cell battery peaks at about that when fully charged, never had an over current situation so have been running it without a driver, that's not smart, but so far, so good..... I guess it really depends on whether you have a decent heat sink, mine never gets hot enough to start pulling more current than it should, and the battery drains down in 15 minutes so it can't get too hot in that amount of time with my massive heat sink. Interestingly, a FAP800 will produce a very dim but Cherry red spot 25 feet away, not from heat, but because I am guessing there is a component of red wavelength it also puts out that you can see, but you have to remove your goggles to see that and I wouldn't do that with the beam close to you or where it could reflect. I dunno, I am opening myself up to severe fire talking about doing that.

Edit: Your LiPo's are the way to get a lot of capacity and light weight power, my lead acid is a bit heavy for the 25AH beast I'm using, when freshly charged my FAP pulls 40 amps, slowly ramping down to about 20 amps in 15 minutes and then I consider it drained. I use it in a closed room and goggles are a must, although I did do a night time beam shot once with a modified el cheapo eBay CCD camera with the IR filter removed. IR is fun, but damn, too dangerous to have enough freedom to play with it much unless locked away from the world. I bought a 1320nm 15W FAP laser off of eBay too, fired that one up with a lab power supply and it burns holes well too, but my CCD camera sees no hint of it at that long of a wavelength, not the smallest indication of energy except for the burn marks and flames.

Thanks , Yeah I did have a 7W 940nm diode like this but sold it , so after I won this one I just wanted to stick it in some form of housing just for the fun of it .

Yeah the CCP 808nm diodes are rated at around 2V drop when driven at their rated current so the single cell lead acid is the closet thing you can find in battery form , One reason I chose LiPos as you stated they are light and fairly small but as I'm using a linear driver approach its a lot of wasted power 70W + in for 20W optical so my run times are around 1 minuet before the heatsink is warm .

Fiber diodes are nice but having long fibers can be a pain , the one I had came with a 1 meter fiber . I found a very short focal lengh convex / convex lens works well to focus the output to a dot . I have a camera that I removed the IR filiter from and my DSLR can see the IR light pretty well but not till I hit 10W +

808nm can be seen by the eye as a dark red colour I believe

Show us some photo's of it being pushed to full output burning something :)

I didn't know that cherry red spot was actually 808nm, then if there is enough power or the power density is high enough, we can see it. I can imagine our eyes are only .1 percent or less sensitive to 800nm so it takes a lot of power to see it, danger! Good thing the spot was 25 feet away but I don't plan on doing that again.

Hey badboy, that BadBoy is bada$$, very nice job, especially if you did all that turning on a drill press!
:gj: +rep!
