I really liked A.Barnetts custom host kits he was selling but I wasn't going to pay
What he wanted so I went ahead and built my first Custom host,
I've been recovering for a month now from a car accident so with 9 fractured ribbs I took my time planing and building this lovely laser!
I bought a al bar pre drilled on eBay but instead of getting the 19mm bored hole I got the 10mm by 26mm by 300mm,
So the difficulties started from the beginning, I knew I could drill the hole wider on a drillpress but not to 19mm, I got lucky held in a vice and drilled to 14mm from both ends the centre met spot on, so know I could use 3-14500 a lot better than 10440 with a 7w diode,
I'll make sure I order the wright diameter next time,
Next step was a heatsink I'm trying to build this cheap and finding a large heatsink isn't cheap or easy, so I decided to use 2 MX 900 sinks JB welded together and brought down on my drillpress and it actually turned out perfect.
I wanted to be able to slide the host in the heatsink as I cannot make threads, and didn't have a large enough drillbit so I ordered a 24mm hardened drill of eBay, this wasn't easy as the drill and sink kept getting too hot and sticking at slow and fast speed it took a few hrs just to drill a 25mm deep hole in the sink, that heatsink got so hot so many times I think it just helped cure the JBweld,
I new I would have 2mm of filing and smoothing on the sink for the host to slide in so I made it perfect, it took a lot of force to push the host in the sink after all the wiring was finished.
Anyway I'm using a 3 element on this build and it metres at 5w set at 5a with 3 14500s and depending on what brand batts I use there isn't too much sag,
The IMRs at full charge 12.6v sag to 10v with the load not to bad,
It turned out really nice considering the al tube cost $17 the heatsink $10 the drillbit $24 and all else I had on hand for my next build.
Something just extrodinary I noticed when u look down the screw hole on the heatsink u see
SXD V3 written on the driver with the V3 under the SXD directly inline with the hole, that is just insane.
