PLT5 488nm diode for <300$?

I'm just hoping to get a chance to see one of these diodes and measure its spectrum and power. I'm in it for the knowledge mostly. If I can get one at a reasonable price, I will.

OP said he's still in high school, I wouldn't expect him to have a PSU. Heck, I don't have one either.

And I've gotten a ~$400 quote for the PLT5-488's from the source that is going to offer me the sharp 488's, saying the osram diodes are still 'very expensive'. Still don't have a quote on the sharp diodes yet though.

Yeah all good just a feeling I have, also why would they send an Osram 488 diode that's supposed to comes in a nice little box specially marked in just a antistatic bag, very strange and unexceptable in my opinion,

Also what happened with Newgazer, how do you order a diode send payment then cancel order! And why would you pay $900 when you say you can get them for $400, it's just all confusing I really hope they are and we find a cheap source! If not we might just have to stick with the sharp 488,s for now!

I got that quote and immediately canceled the $900 order. They never shipped it so it was a quick process at least

Also are you sure they are supposed to come with all that stuff? It sounds to me like osram is pushing these out asap before sharp takes over this niche diode market.

And the only downside to the sharp diodes is the phantom square, and I don't even know if the osram diodes have it or not. I'm very impressed with the stuff sharp pumped out on the past two months, I have zero complaints if they get cheap 484, 488, and 492nm diodes into my collection. That's my goal at the very least...

Look how similar these pics look, If 488 is what I think it is it isn't going to be very rewarding for me!

First 2 pics are Ivan Supers 488nm
3rd pic is Jordans 500nm
4 is Jordans 505nm
5 is the 488nm I have coming!
And last pic is my resent. 473 or higher sharp!

No phantom square in the Osram diodes!

Yeah, the 480nm-490nm range is a very nice cyan color, at least according to pictures & some online tools. My 473 still looks pretty darkish blue when viewed and isn't quite a nice, clear cyan. Oh well. Still a nice color :)

Yeah, my 477nm has that exact same color. It's pretty nice the way your camera captured that color as it looks just like mine. I'm sending a 502.9nm diode to BowtieGuy. He was asking me if I knew where he might find one and I had two, so he's getting one of them. Can't wait to get my hands on a 488nm or higher WL. I really want to see a higher one as I already know what 488nm looks like. If I could see a real 495nm, that would be something.

I was talking with UltimateKaiser tonight and he was showing me his 577nm 1+ watt yellow laser. I'm hoping he will post a thread on it as it is worth seeing and understanding the optical path of this $30K laser.

Oh wow yeah that must be something, 1w. + 577

Ahh. Yeah that circle in the sharp ones is a bit odd. Mine has that too. I think the diode window is too small for the output.

Edit: paul, when you get this can you check for the Phantom square on a g-lens?

Sure. No problem. Have you seen it on this diode, or are you just concerned that it might be there?

Wow this thread took off,
Yeah I don't have a psu other than for computers...
I shipped the diode to Paul yesterday and we'll see what to do with it from there. I'll probably post it on the b/s/t or if zraffleticket still wants it he did pm me first.

At the moment I'm still interested, I'd like to see what it spectros at first. If it's 483-486, or 492-498, I'm all in. Otherwise I'll pass on it. No need for me to have two right in the same color range

Disregard the above. 490 may be done. I'll surely want it :cryyy:

That is terrible man, it's not like there were many of these, I'm not sure why you went with 275ma it's quite a bit for a special 2 off diode, That's why I asked before, I mean even the 473 are hard to get, I saw one go for over $100 on eBay, But there was only 2 of these and now 1

Its actually mind blowing knowing these diodes are available to us at these prices and quantity. 8 years back these wavelengths where Extremely rare, 473nm was what we all dreamed about having, they where available in DPSS from cni/dragon lasers but cost in the couple thousands $$$, now 488nm diodes even existing and available to us is just..........unreal!!!

anyone else smiling when thinking back about this hobby in the very early years? the PS3 diode, DVD re-writer diode or the Blu-ray :D
